[for @temperance and @thom ]
The new marching orders had been posted, and Ber had discovered, with no small amount of dismay, that they included nothing about Dresmond. Everyone acted as if Zevran had never existed, as if he hadn’t arrived on their doorstep bearing word of people who faced unimaginable hardship day after day. Ber knew that Zevran had told them everything, because Zevran had told anyone who would listen of his plight - that was why he’d come to Nevermere, to plead for help. Sure, it took time to rally an army, but Ber had thought they would provide aid as soon as they could. But now? Now he wasn’t so sure.
He was headed to Cambria with a whole host of people he’d rather not think about and had no idea why. Before Zevran, Ber had paid little mind to the confusing mess of politics that tied every kingdom and territory together, and after Zevran, he had only paid attention insofar as he could glean information about the one other kingdom that had caught his interest - the one whose hardship Nevermere now seemed willing to ignore. As far as he knew, Cambria had become part of Nevermere years ago, so he couldn’t figure out why a military presence the territory was still necessary with war in Dresmond looming on the horizon. Especially after the Eldouir had attacked Arynn Frey. Who was to say Nevermere wasn’t next? Surely it would be preferable to be the attacker rather than the attacked, and yet… Cambria.
Heaving a sigh, Ber knocked on the door and stepped back to wait, gaze falling on the garden beds as he waited for Temperance or Thom or maybe Melody to answer him. Though he had caught the plants all green and flourishing at the tail end of Aestas, he had been assured many times that the flowers within were gorgeous in full bloom in Ver, but it seemed as though he would have to continue trying to imagine the flowers blossoming rather than see them for himself. Well, such was the life of a soldier: some things, like unfair orders and missing little moments, simply couldn’t be helped.
