[For @nadinemachenet ]
Aldrich had been in his office for a bit when he was distracted by someone knocking on his door. A young soldier hesitantly asked if she could come in for a moment. Of course he said yes, and he had invited her to close the door behind her and sit.
The young woman explained that she had recently been transferred from one platoon to another, for reasons that don't really matter in the bigger picture, and that she was having a difficult time fitting it. She went on to tell him that it was mostly due to one person, who didn't really make her feel welcome. She always felt intimidated by the fact that the other soldier had more years of experience, and that she seemed to hold that over the newcomer whenever she got the chance. A lot of older soldiers didn't like it when a new soldier got added to their group, let alone one that wasn't as experienced yet.
Aldrich told her he would look into it, and had asked for the soldier's name. When he heard 'Machenet', he nodded with a straight face. As soon as the young woman left his office, he let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. Of course Nadine would be making his life more difficult again. The lieutenant had sent his assistant to find Machenet, and to tell her to meet him at his office after lunchtime.
In the meantime, Aldrich poured himself a glass of whiskey and stared at the wall. He had been having a good day, but that had all come to an end now. He had only just started to forgive his brother Grayson for what had happened, but he definitely hadn't forgotten the shit Nadine had pulled. It had been a year since she 'cheated' during their little friends with benefits situation. Out of all men, she had chosen Grayson, who hadn't really known about what was going on between Aldrich and Nadine.
Although Aldrich pretended like it didn't bother him, the wound was still fresh. He hadn't talked to Nadine since it had happened. So far he had been able to avoid having to strike up a conversation with her, but he couldn't ignore a complaint like this. He was Nadine's superior, whether he liked that or not (and he kind of did like it).
So he waited in his office, a cigarette dangling between his lips while he looked at his glass of whiskey, which he was swirling around in his hand.
