Although he was glad enough to see the soldier leave, he was pretty sure it was rude to turn your back on the locals, so Raff offered,
"As a Lieutenant, I apologize for one of my soldiers. That kid was Stormcrest and the only reason I can give for his behavior is that he's young. If he causes you any offense, then please let me know Sigyn and I'll take care of it. He's one of a few under my command, so what he does, reflects directly back on me."
Raff did what he could to smooth over the moment. That was one of the most important parts of attaining any rank, that when someone in your charge does something off, wrong or rude, you had to take the blame for it. Soldiers were the limbs and were controlled by their commanding officers, so when Stormcrest screwed up, it looked bad for Terach, Wulfbrand, Woodwick and the others as a direct reflection. And taking on that responsibility and accountability was the difference in rank. You took the blame on your own shoulders like a parent and rectified the situation.
Then some snooty high n mighty chick decided that everyone should suddenly pray. He dropped the fork from his left hand and just stared at the woman looking down on them as if the new Nevermere people could possibly know everything about Cambrian culture. Talk about misplaced condescension. As much as he wanted to sigh and give an eye roll, he didn't. There were too many foreign people like Sigyn literally right next to him and what he said and did was under heavy scrutiny. If madame prayers was trying to publicly shame and shun all the Nevermerans, she'd done a fantastic job with that stunt. The Lieutenant stayed silent until her words were done before he spoke.
"Well, I'm done eating then." Raff said, picking up his plate and standing to offer the seat that was probably meant for Sigyn anyway. It was Cambria and from now on, he should keep his eating limited to a singular activity, best done away from them.
"I'm just following orders." Terach shrugged. He had no idea of her rank and she'd offered none. Nevermere used ma'am and miss but there was no mention of forms of address in the briefing. "I've heard that Cambria has some great warriors and soldiers so I'm sure you understand following orders right?" he asked.
