[OPEN]
When the ship finally reached land in the late afternoon of the third day, not even Ber’s reservations about the danger inherent in some of these women could drown out the sheer relief of having finally set foot once more upon solid ground. Gone was the constant rocking of a wooden deck under his feet, and though the sensation curiously took a little while longer than he expected to fade from his mind, his stomach eventually settled once more. Even at first glance, Cambria was, very clearly, not Skia. Though Nevermerean soldiers had become a common sight, the size of the ships and the number of people in uniform involved likely still made the seasonal changing of the guard quite the spectacle despite the number of times it had happened previously.
Or, Ber thought as he looked out at a sea of both somewhat suspicious and somewhat curious faces while he disembarked, the Cambrians have merely gathered to size up the fresh meat.
Now having settled in - by which he meant claiming a bed for himself by putting his stuff on it - Ber’s first order of business included finding food. Squinting in the sunlight, he stepped back out onto the street, which was packed earth worn by generations of feet rather than the cobblestones of Skia, and looked around. Though not identical, the wooden buildings around him gave little clues as to what they contained, and more often than not, any glance toward a Cambrian was met with varying degrees of wariness. Welcome to his new home for the foreseeable future.
After another moment’s hesitation, Ber began walking toward what he thought was the central point of the cluster of buildings. As he did so, noting any landmarks with which he could orient himself, he began to notice Nevermerean influences in and around the clearly foreign land: some sturdy buildings of stone reminded him of those he’d left behind, the heavier fabrics with which some of the Cambrian adorned themselves alongside their furs, and the dark-haired girls running around whose antics seemed to earn them more disapproval than that of their counterparts.
Upon reaching one of likely many informal gathering areas, Ber followed his nose to the food, and as he stepped foot inside a large hall with an arched wooden ceiling, he paused. In the smokey interior before him stood a long wooden table laden with food from which Cambrians and Nevermereans alike appeared to collect their meals and wander off eat elsewhere, often gathering in clusters on the fringes of the hall. A glance down the table indicated that not only were the eating arrangements, though reminiscent of, more casual than those back in Skia, but the food itself differed too. Fish, rather than pork or beef, seemed the most prevalent. Feeling rather out of place, the soldier surveyed the offerings before picking something mild that seemed like it would be easy on his stomach. Food tentatively acquired, Ber turned and began to search for somewhere to eat.
Figured an informal thread where all the newly arrived Nevermereans have a chance to meet all the Cambrians could be fun. No pressure to participate, but I’m tagging the people who might be interested: @warren @raff Octavius Wulfbrand @norah Odina Ellis Isolde @revna Sigyn @waiola @grissa @neela @rina and I’m not sure if Willa Wren and @viveka are back yet?
