The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

Kasper had been over seeing the dock rebuild, he was in the worst mood but it was about to get worse he believed. The only thing Kasper had been told was that Faylin's replacement was requesting to speak with the second Sergeant, he wasn't even getting a promotion great! The small victory at Coheeds little festival had already evaporated and standing outside the closed door of her office brought out a fresh wave of dread, his hand slipping into his pocket he felt the necklace and the ring he was going to give her.
He knocked and identified himself, "It's Sargent Van Zant...," and he waited for permission to enter.

Aldrich was prepared for a moody sergeant. He wasn't sure either why Kasper hadn't been promoted and the decision had been to send him to Coheed. He wasn't complaining, though. He liked the change of scenery and was looking forward to spending time away from Nevermere, to heal his heart and stay busy.
"Come in!" he responded when he heard the knock and the voice. He would nod politely at Kasper and gesture at a chair. "Good morning, Van Zant. Thank you for seeing me so quickly." He looked at some of the papers on his desk and then back at Kasper. "I was sorry to hear about Valana." He didn't know exactly how close Kasper and Faylin had been, but he knew they got along well. "I hope there are no hard feelings between you and me, though. I was expecting you to be promoted, not for me to be sent to Coheed, but I want to work together here." He paused to see if Kasper reacted to what he said. "Could you give me a rundown of what has happened already here, with the docks and the soldiers, and tell me what you think we could do better." He had parchment that documented what had happened already, but he wanted to hear from Kasper as well.

Aldrich Abbott, that was both a surprise and a deeper sting as Kasper came in and stopped at attention before his now superior hands behind his back. The true slap in the face was mentioning Faylin but he didn't react to the hurt inside, "None taken sir, there's always better," he said and his words were heavy because it was a constant reminder that the commoner he was would never rise to the expectation of people like Faylin or like Aldrich, "Sergeant Valana was overseeing a great deal of organization for Nevermere troops, the women warriors their Parabolti seemed accepting enough of our training but the men not so much...their men are like the women of Cambria, they lack respect for women here. I've been handling schedules and inventory, but mostly I've been overseeing the dock rebuild," Kasper finally broke his stance and approached a small corner of the office where he was keeping his work, "By the end of Aestas pending no real set backs it will be complete," he rifled through his belongings and pulled a leather bound stack of parchment, "We will need one more supply shipment from home, I've been working with the Morrigan company to put in a new work order for said supplies," Faylin had taught Kasper organization so his careful detailing was all in the bound parchment (a few misspelled words of course from his unknown learning disability) which he sat before Aldrich, "how...how is Kat? How is my family?" he hadn't heard from them in a few weeks, a little concerning but not unheard of.

If Kasper was hurt or annoyed, he did a good job at hiding it. Aldrich nodded and looked at the paperwork again, not connecting the dots on the 'always better' and Kasper's commoner roots.
"Good", he then said with an approving no's of the head. "It sounds like you got a lot done already. We'll just pick up where we left off, and continue what we've been doing." He accepted the stack of parchment and placed it in front of him, going through Kasper's writing. "Are the Morrigans a trusted supplier of the military?" he asked, a slight frown on his face. "One of their witches was recently publicly arrested. Can you assure me getting a shipment from them won't bite us in the ass?" He didn't care much where the shipment came from, but he needed to be able to trust the supplier.
Aldrich bit the inside of his cheek when Kasper asked about Kat. "Uh-", he said and ran a hand through his hair. "Your family is doing okay, and so are the children, but I'm afraid Katerina had an accident. She's missing. The general consensus is that something must have happened with her magic. I'm sorry, Van Zant." Aldrich remained silent for a moment, before speaking again. "If it would help, I can offer you two days off. I know setting a period of time on grieving isn't... well... doable, but I want to give you some time to process what has happened."
We won't call it quits. We'll call it the start.

Kasper forgot everything prior to the bad news, it was happening again and he suddenly couldn't breath then his legs began to shake as he was about to hit the floor. His face drained of color and words died on his heavy breathing he turned stumbling toward the door as the room began to spin, he burst through the door and made it ten steps before he hit both of his knees and puked...
...where was he going? He didn't know and didn't care about Coheed, his little family was left without someone to care for them and again "Kat was just missing" no big deal! He tried to get up and head toward the construction zone because he as going to get on a boat and row home if he had to but his legs were like lead and he as fighting so hard to not lose it more, "no...no...no," he kept mumbling as his body went numb again causing him to falter again only he fell to one knee this time...

For some stupid reason, Aldrich hadn't expected Kasper to take the news this badly. Perhaps he just didn't feel as strongly about family as Kasper did. Aldrich got up from his chair when he saw Kasper go pale. As a good lieutenant, he wouldn't just let the young man stumble out of the office by himself. He followed behind Kasper, giving him some space and waiting in the door as the man threw up.
Aldrich moved closer and gently placed a hand on Kasper's back, ignoring the looks of the people around them as the man kept repeating the word no. "Kasper", he said, gently shaking him by the shoulder. It was unusual for him to use first names. "Come on, boy, let's get you seated." He would attempt to lift Kasper by supporting him by the arm, and if Kasper cooperated, he would take him back to the office to give him a chair to sit in.

Kasper was numb and his heart hurt, the feeling of knowing his twin was gone was the worst worse than Mina and he loved her just the same but the one person Kasper had always had since birth that was...that was...he didn't care as Aldrich guided him back into the office that tears fell hard down his face or the shaking of his body at the restraint of truly sobbing he didn't care to do it in front of anyone this was raw.
Losing Mina...
...Faylin.
Nothing compared to the loss of his twin... and Kasper let it go as soon as he sat. Head hung. Fists in his lap. Kasper just let it go.
He did stop finally, "I need to go home Sargeant to...to, uh, I got to get to my family my parents are dead as are most of my Uncles and Aunts...me..me..and Kat," his voice broke and more tears fell but he kept on but just on the line, "She's my twin she was..my all and she was a bitch...but she's half of me...," he finally was able to wipe tears away finally able to move, he held his composer a little longer, "We've raised our siblings, we raised almost all twenty some of our cousins...Mina Van Zant was also my sister she was murdered...I have to get to them even if...if just for a few days..."

Aldrich returned to his seat behind the desk once Kasper was seated, and he stared at the documents in his desk while Kasper let it all out. After a while, the man found his voice again, and Aldrich lifted his head to watch him as he spoke. He understood where Kasper was coming from, but...
"I'm sorry, Van Zant. I can't let you return home. The journey alone would take twelve days, six there and six back, and we need you here." While Aldrich wasn't known for his good heart and being considerate, he didn't like having to tell a soldier in distress no. "Your family will be taken care of, you're close with the Delaneys, no? I'll write them, ask them to keep an eye on your family. But you, you need to stay here. You can have three days off, but then I need you back." Aldrich maintained eye contact with Kasper. "I know it's not what you want to hear, but this is how it will have to be."

The highborn could be so cruel, they took advantage or didn't their families. It was a cold slap and it sobered Kasper up enough that he seriously felt slapping Aldrich right in the mouth, "I'll write my family sir," a Delaney? Kasper knew like one personally and he wouldn't trust Grant Delaney with a baby, no he had to get out of this office, "As for the Morrigan question; I'd trust a Morrigan before I would another shipping company, I know Keelan Morrigan, he doesn't fuck around with his business his shipments are either on time or early, never late," he stood finally by force of will, "plus sir the King signed off on all that we don't question the higher ups," the words felt like acid because the truth was if this had been some high born prick he'd be on the first ship home with a royal fucking blow job to boot, "so if the King approves sir we don't have much say," he slowly reached into the pocket of his uniform jacket pulling out a folded pice of parchment, "I would like to request a new partner as well," he offered Aldrich the paper, "Is there anything else sir?"

"Good", he simply said. He knew Kasper wasn't happy with him, but there was nothing Aldrich could do about it. He, too, would be sending a letter, but to Hadrian Usher.
Kasper's venom didn't go unnoticed. "Smart that you know that, Van Zant", he replied dryly. When Kasper gave him the parchment for a new partner, he nodded. "I'll discuss the request. That was all. Goodday, Van Zant."
