The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
It was only a few days after the coronation of her nephew, but Cordelia's mission continued. She had recently talked to Kezia, and while she had seen Ophelia more often than Kezia, she still didn't know her nephew's wife all that well. That would certainly change now that she was queen.
With confident steps Cordelia made her way over to the room in which she had heard the queen was at that time. The older woman still felt warm and happy inside because she had been the one to give the princess her crown. Now she would be visiting the princess' big version, though.
The brunette knocked on the door before opening it and popping her head around the corner with a smile on her face. Cordelia's smile truly was contagious. The apples of her cheeks were very prominent when she smiled, and those cheeks caused her eyes to be a bit squinted when she smiled.
"Your majesty", she said kindly as she stepped inside the room. "How are you liking the change?"

The days since the coronation had passed in a whirlwind. Ophelia had flitted from one thing to the next, trying to ease the tensions inevitable at such a surprising transition. She was the sugar to help the medicine go down, and it was a role that she played well. The exhaustion of the whole affair was getting to her. Her nerves were frayed, and the potions that she often used to calm them seemed to lack their usual luster.
When Cordelia popped her head around the corner, Ophelia was speaking with some of the staff responsible for her childrens’ care. Things would be different now, and Ophelia wanted to make sure that her children’s studies were still attended to and that—Lorelle specifically—would make the transition into he new life without too much upset. They were just concluding their meeting when Cordelia entered. They passed Cordelia on their way out, dipping their heads to her in respect.
Ophelia turned and offered her a warm, though tired, smile. She didn’t know Akagi’s aunt well, but he spoke very highly of her—enough to elevate her to a position of such importance. So, Ophelia decided it was in her best interests to trust her as well. Cordelia’s sparkling eyes and smile were like the sun emerging on a stormy day.
“Change is always difficult for a time,” Ophelia said diplomatically, the slightest bit of tremble in her voice though she hid it well, “But trust and patience is what will help us weather it—or so I keep reminding myself.”

She dipped her head as well in response to the people who passed by her. Cordelia had respect for everyone, even the staff.
Ophelia was a very beautiful woman. Cordelia had always thought so, and she was reminded of it again now she saw the queen up close. Akagi definitely had picked a beautiful wife (or had it been an arranged marriage? Aenwyn doesn't know).
The tremble wasn't obvious, but Cordelia was good at reading people. "My dear, you take it much better than I would have", she said with a soft chuckle as she walked over closer to take a seat, if permitted. "There's nothing wrong with having to get used to it. It's quite a change. I suppose you're moving to Arynn Frey full time now, or will you still spend most of your time in Nevermere?" She didn't know what Akagi and Ophelia had agreed on.
"Just know, although I'm Akagi's hand, I'm always there for you too. We do not know each other well, but the love I have for my nephew extends to his wife and children." Cordelia's warm smile appeared again. "I'm an old woman, I've seen quite some change in my lifetime, and I'd dare to say I've figured out ways to deal with it by now."

Cordelia’s presence was like a warm fire on a cold autumna day. Ophelia physically drew closer, scooting forward on the chair she’d taken across from Cordelia so that her fears might be thawed by the woman’s glow. She didn’t realize how much she’d needed the reassurance until now. Ophelia would never get it from Cassian, nor would she demand it of Akagi, so to have it from Cordelia meant more than words could express.
“To Arynn Frey, yes.” Ophelia said, trying to keep the disappointment out of her tone, “It’s not my first home, but a home nonetheless. Lorelle is old enough to go spend one season a year in Nevermere to ensure a well-rounded education. But I will be here. And…” Ophelia smiled, “I’m grateful for your support. Truly.” The princess—no, queen—called to a servant to ask for tea. The servant left, obliging willingly.
“So, where does this rank among the tempestuous seasons of change?” Ophelia said, her slight tease concealing the more serious question beneath, “I never thought I’d see an Arynn Frey on the precipice of war.”

Cordelia was not completely unaware of the effect she had of people, but she never used it for her own advantage, and it happened spontaneously. She just wanted people to feel comfortable around her, which was easy because of her warm personality.
Ophelia would be moving to Arynn Frey, which made Cordelia happy, but also a bit sad for the woman because leaving your home behind was never easy. She let the remark about the well rounded education slip. The only thing that Arynn Frey wouldn't be able to offer the little girl was magical education, but just knowledge wise, Cordelia would dare to say that Arynn Frey was better than Nevermere.
The older woman smiled when Ophelia said she was grateful for her support. She watched the servant leave to fetch them tea, and looked at her nephew's wife again.
"You're definitely most welcome, my dear. My goal is to help out where I can."
She then sighed softly and nodded. "It has been a while since Arynn Frey found itself in this position, yet I do not doubt that Akagi is the best king for us now, with this upcoming war. He will know what to do, and he will know how to keep us all safe."
The servant entered again and poured them both a cup of tea before stepping off to the side again. "He and your brother seem to get along well. With the support of Nevermere, even more is possible, and who knows, maybe Lorendale would be willing to help as well."

Everything about Cordelia put Ophelia at ease. The new queen wondered if it was natural or by design that this was so. After all, her father, Julian, had conditioned every part of her personality to be what it was. So why should others not manufacture themselves for usefulness the same way? But Ophelia decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. To trust her—for who else could she trust?
“Cassian—I mean, his Majesty—is a good man. Wise beyond his years. He’s always been so. As for Lorendale…” Ophelia frowned a little, considering Cordelia, “May I speak candidly, Cordelia?”

Unbeknownst to both of them, it was a good thing that Ophelia gave her the benefit of the doubt, because Cordelia had no ill intentions and was genuinely a warm and happy person. She was glad that her nephew's wife seemed to trust her and appreciated her kind words and sentiments.
She smiled softly at the correction from Cassian to his majesty. It was odd to have to refer with such high titles to family members, and she was still getting used to it herself with Akagi. "Of course you may, dear", Cordelia responded. She was rather curious what Ophelia had to say, because she certainly had her own opinions of Lorendale that would have to be phrased carefully if ever spoken out loud.

Ophelia faltered for a moment. She knew her brother was guarded, even among his closest advisors. Perhaps in the familiar bounds of Nevermere, she’d have been more skeptical of new faces, but here? Ophelia needed people in Arynn Frey whom she could trust. Cordelia was trusted by her husband, whom she trusted more than most anyone in the world. So, she’d offer Cordelia her candor.
“The Eldouir are a monster of Lorendale’s making,” Ophelia said in her typical gentle, matter-of-fact tone, “Lorendale has relied these many years on Nevermere’s support, and now they will be also protected by Arynn Frey who has suffered for their mistakes. And yet...” She furrowed her brow. “I do not see the queen offering to do the same. To take responsibility for their mistakes and move forward. Yes, she was young when she assumed leadership of her kingdom, but now?"

Cordelia would move from her seat opposite of Ophelia to a seat right next to her. She would extend her arms and place her hand on top of the woman's, if she allowed.
"My darling, I don't want it to be common knowledge, but I wholeheartedly agree with you. The Eldouir are Lorendale's responsibility, but sadly it seems like their queen hasn't accepted that responsibility. She's a silent player, and I believe she is still too young, and not hardened enough. She's afraid of making big decisions."
It felt good to hear someone shared her views. "I have a proposal for Lorendale and their queen soon, something I've been working on with Akagi. What her response to that proposal will be, will determine how I feel about Lorendale in battles to come. I can't speak for Akagi, but I will advise him and work with him to see what we can do."
She wasn't sure whether she should share the proposal with Ophelia or not. It was something that hadn't been shared during a meeting with the cabinet yet, and as of now, only Akagi and Cordelia knew about it.

Every word out of Cordelia’s mouth brought Ophelia comfort. Her own mother had never been capable of nurturing the children that nearly broke her. Feeling the warmth of Cordelia’s hands, she imagined this was what others must feel when their mothers held them to protect them from the storms of the world. Even if she were to taste just a fraction of it.
“What proposal is this?” Ophelia asked, trying to contain her surprise that she’d heard nothing of it. Not from Akagi, not from anyone.

Cordelia decided she would share the idea with Ophelia. It seemed like a little secret would do the woman good. It could make her feel seen and appreciated, trusted even.
"There is no certainty that the approval will actually be send to Lorendale, but I will push for this idea to be done in one way or another. If Lorendale can offer us part of the souls of Gifted, we might be able to make enchantments that possess the Gifted's powers. It could be a game changer in the fight against the Eldouir. Ideally, part of an Eldouir soul would be incredibly useful. Akagi seemed to like the idea, but of course it's a difficult thing to ask from the queen of a kingdom that doesn't get along too well with their Gifted as is."

Ophelia raised an eyebrow and continued to bear her soft smile. Her features revealed nothing beyond that might be lurking in her pretty little head. Perhaps she’d learned something from Cassian after all.
“To possess the power of a Gifted would be a useful thing indeed,” Ophelia responded, “If only—” There was a knock at the door. Inwardly the queen huffed, frustrated at being interrupted, but she maintained her composure and responded.
“Come in.” An embarrassed messenger opened the door, saying with forced calm:
“Forgive me, Your Majesty, there’s been an urgent request from the tutor. It’s the young princess…” The messenger’s eyes darted to Cordelia as Ophelia stiffened, turning to the woman as well.
“Please excuse me…” Ophelia dipped her head to Cordelia, “I look forward to continuing this conversation.”
Ophelia moved off, still inwardly fuming. Once again, motherhood had intervened in pursuing more important matters. Lorelle was a handful, and one that she was increasingly spiteful that it was hers to manage.
