The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Cordelia had a remarkable way of walking. Even when she wasn't in a hurry, she walked fast, the heels of her shoes loudly clacking on the stone tiles beneath her feet. She always seemed rushed, but there was simply so much in life to see, do and explore. If Carpe Diem was a person, it would be Cordelia.
The brunette was rushing through the corridors again, making small talk here and there with cabinet members and scholars in her path. Some smiles here, some chuckles there, and then she was on her way again. Clack clack clack, her heels making her presence known to everyone with ears.
She had met with most of the cabinet members already, but she hadn't talked to the Minister of Enchantments yet. The King's Hand was on her way to the minister's office, though, wanting to change that she hadn't talked to her yet. Cordelia wondered how much they would have in common. If she wasn't mistaken, she was twice Rachel's age, but there was no age restriction to wanting to talk and to be interested in enchantments. She used enchantments in her everyday life as well.
A Minister if Enchantments would surely be important, sooner rather than later. The Eldouir were close, and she knew her nephew Akagi wanted to get rid of them just as much as she herself. She wondered what Rachel and Akagi had in mind, and what enchantments they'd design to help them fight the Eldouir.
Cordelia knocked on the door and waited a moment for a response before walking in. "Good morning", she said with a big and kind smile on her face. "Cordelia Olivarius, king Akagi's Hand. I'm not sure whether an introduction is necessary, but it certainly can't hurt!" She hadn't been an official politician before Akagi had asked her to be his Hand, and she had married into the family, so she wasn't that well known to most people. "You're the Minister of Enchantments, correct? Might you perhaps have time for a little chat?"

Ink, yes ink would make all the difference! It would be the key to it and of that, she had no doubt! Keeping to the elements would surely make the enchantments even stronger. Derivation could solve nearly any challenge if applied correctly and she laughed aloud at the jumble of thoughts that tumbled through her mind.
While they were all worried about the Eldouir, Rachel was honored and humbled in being asked to be a part of some possible solutions. Potential was the greatest feeling anyone could have in scholastic pursuits and it was what she and many others in Arryn Frey thoroughly enjoyed. Her brown eyes wandered to the sunrise, taking in the light diffraction which sent her on a further tangent of possibilities. Spreading in wave form could maximize the energy dissolution! Yes!
Her handwriting scrawled across the parchment in ever increasing speed to keep up with the ideas. She knew that she was quite young for the position, but she hoped that an enthusiastic attitude and positive outlook would ensure success in her future endeavors. Every waking moment was spent hard at work and thought, studying, teaching, taking notes and most importantly, learning.
Chel wrote down her thoughts as swiftly as they came and took a sip of her tea before continuing. An energetic clacking was heading her way and she looked up with a smile at Cordelia. Rachel respected the King's Hand tremendously, and was very glad that they were about to have a chance to speak together. The older woman's insights were brilliant and unlike other societies, the age of the King's Hand was a plus. Her life experience and wisdom would be a fount of knowledge they were all grateful for.
"Ah, the King's Hand. Good morning." She greeted her with a welcoming smile and nodded in affirmation of her question.
"Yes, indeed I do. I was just taking down a few notes as some ideas came to me. Please join me in a cup of tea."

Rachel's energy matched Cordelia's, which immediately made the woman beam even more. She liked it when people were as joyous and happy as she was. It made it easier to be herself. Not that she would change who she was for anyone, but it certainly made the conversation easier. "Please, call me Cordelia. My friends are more than welcome to call me by my name." She smiled and took a seat, happy to join her for some tea. "The tea vendors must be making a fortune, with how much tea is consumed at the palace", she laughed. Her nephew loved tea as well, but he put so many sugarcubes in it that she got diabetes just looking at him. "The last time I spoke with Akagi, I noticed that he had an enchanted quill that writes his thoughts for him. Ask him about it." She winked. A pen that wrote for her would certainly save her wrist in the long run.
"So, Rachel- may I call you Rachel or do you prefer lady Adesina? Forgive me for being too bold or personal, I'm just a very bubbly person, or so I've been told! Where was I- oh yes, I meant to ask you how you are! The coronation was beautiful, and I'm looking forward to see what Akagi will do next."

Rachel grinned at meeting another kindred spirit with an ebullient nature.
"Thank you for that Cordelia. Please call me Rachel, or even Chel if you like." Rachel replied happily.
She tapped the cup lightly to transfer the tea from the pot to the second cup and nodded along with Cordelia's words. Joining in her laughter, Chel agreed that that tea consumption had gone up dramatically lately.
"I don't take anything with my tea except lemon, but I can get what you need to add if you like. Cordelia." She added cheerfully. "This is a raspberry and rosehips mix tea that's the perfect picker upper in the morning."
At first, the young Minister had thought that the other members around her would be condescending about her youth in comparison, but Cordelia was so amiable that it immediately put her worries to rest. She couldn't possibly ask for a more cheerful person to enjoy chatting with.
"An enchanted quill sounds like the perfect idea! Very clever." She sipped her hot fragrant tea, pausing for a moment to inhale the berry scented mix and smiled again.
"The coronation was exactly what we all needed, most definitely. King Akagi is a breath of fresh of air, wisdom and confidence that will lead us admirably into the future. I think he's got the potential greatness that all Arrynites can look up to and he's a bold step into excellent leadership. He's asked me to think of a few ideas and I'm currently enjoying the challenge." This was said with an optimistic mix of pleased accomplishment and hopefulness. Her brown eyes lingered on the woman's face, their smiles mirroring back at each other. Maybe someday, she herself would be as respected and revered as the King's Hand sitting before her. Cordelia's energy and enthusiasm were exactly what made a good friend; especially at a first conversation.
"I hear you've been achieving some excellent work at your post Cordelia. I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to seeing more of, and working with you in the future."

Rachel, or even Chel. She liked - no, loved people who weren't too stuck up to get on a first name basis right away. The world was better when everyone was friendly with one another, and using a first name made everything a little more friendly and personal than last names and sir this, mylady that. Cordelia took a sip of her tea and enjoyed the flavour.
"Oh this will do nicely, thank you!" she said happily. Tea was the most magical drink in the whole of Terra Nova. It cured everything. Heartache? Tea! A bad day? Tea! Celebration? Tea! But maybe she was biased there, because she simply didn't enjoy alcohol all that much.
"Raspberry and rosehip is a combination that's so good that one starts to wonder whether they have gone through the marriage ritual", she said, jokingly, referring to the fact that a pact or bond was made between two lovers during their first marriage, one that could never be replicated again later.
She smiled at Rachel when she praised her nephew. "I try not to be biased, because I am his aunt, of course, but I do agree with what you say. I think he's destined for greatness. He's a wonderful boy- excuse me, man, by now.
She laughed and waved the compliment away. "Oh, just a little bit here and there. Nothing too specific yet. But thank you, I sure do hope we'll be working together more frequently. While I will enjoy it, I'm also afraid it's a necessity. The Eldouir are closer than ever, and they have not come to look for a friendly chat."

Chel tilted her head and smiled at the woman's statements and good nature. That mix of positivity and energy were a perfect combination of what the people of Arryn Frey needed most in their government. A good outlook kept up your spirits and bolstered those around you. And having the energy physically and emotionally, was essential to both of their positions. She would most definitely be looking to the woman for her pleasant company and had faith that they would work quite well together.
"I do like that there is tea for everyone and every occasion." she replied, smiling. "It can be calming, energizing, something tasty, or especially unique that we can enjoy."
Her relation comment was amusing and it brought out Chel's dimples in full force with a laugh.
"Well, I think the bias is very much deserved in the King's temperament. The king and queen give us hope that we will carry through this difficulty."
She paused for a few minutes to finish off her cup of tea before refilling it. When the serious topic was confirmed, Chel knew it was best to get these things out in the open and face them directly. The young woman nodded her head in agreement with what the King's Hand said and answered in a calm tone.
"They will most definitely prove to be a challenge Cordelia." Chel set down the cup and folded her hands in front of her. "They're problematic at best. With their showy, primitive, primal and hedonistic natures, it will take some team work to find some effective solutions."
Again, she picked up her tea and sipped it slowly to savor it before she continued.
"But I'm confident that we will work well on this challenge and come out the better for it."

"I completely agree!" she said. "My go to is black tea infused with cinnamon and ginger." (Black Chai, as we know it).
"I'm glad that Kimora has taken the change well. I was worried it would cause a rift between her and Akagi, but so far so good, it seems. It's a shame the situation with the wall went down the way it did. I hope the citizens don't blame Kimora too much. She has been a great queen to us, but I am curious to see what Akagi will do."
Chel and Cordelia seemed to be on the same page about the Eldouir. "You're absolutely correct, my dear", she said. Cordelia often called younger women 'my dear', and it was never meant to belittle them or make them feel insignificant or less than herself, but as a form of endearment and respect. "I have been thinking what enchantments could help us in a fight against them, but it's difficult to come up with something that would work in a situation that doesn't require for it to be a melee attack. To keep ourselves safe, it would be best to have a ranged weapon that could hurt their gift." She thought for a moment. "What do you think about armor that could nullify their Gift? I have no idea how yet, but I'll let you in on a little secret."
She leaned over the desk a bit. "Akagi asked me to come up with an alliance with Lorendale. I suggested a deal to him: we offer some enchanted items in exchange for parts of the souls of Gifted. With those souls, we might be able to make weapons that can replicate the Gifts from the souls." She leaned back again. "But it's still in the works."

"With cinnamon and ginger? I'll certainly try that combination. I enjoy a stout cup of orange pekoe to boost my energy when my spirits are flagging."
She listened as the woman spoke and wondered what sort of unique position that it put the woman in emotionally. Of course a person wanted the very best for their nephew, but holding a political position also made her aware of all the positions of the people involved. Chel traced a nail along the edge of her cup as she spoke, feeling increasingly pensive as topics grew more serious than mere tea content, quality and preference.
"While what happened with the wall is alarming, I don't think that the population would necessarily blame Kimora over it personally. The Eldouir are truly accountable for that incident. We're a sensible people that pride ourselves on our intellect and I'm glad that both she and the King will remain amicable."
When the young woman was about to comment further on it, she was called my dear, and it broadened her smile. Cordelia proved herself to be as kind as she was clever, and her compassion didn't go unnoticed.
"Armor? Hmm. I do like the idea that we could customize something for each Arrynite, but if it's made of something like standard metal, then one who controls that element could possibly warp that material..." Chel's voice dropped off at the secret revelation and she gave the older woman a surprised look.
"Is that so? A mine of Gifted prospective souls?!" the pitch of her voice rose slightly in anticipation of the query. Now the King's Hand had her full and complete interest. She leaned forward at the news, subconsciously showing she wanted to know more.

"I really hope so", she responded before letting out a small sigh. "Kimora is a good woman." Cordelia was also glad to hear someone from the younger generation agree with what she said, because it gave her the feeling that not only the older generation saw what a good queen Kimora had been.
Then the Hand mentioned enchantments, and shared some things about her secret project. The Minister raised a fair point about the armour. "I hadn't even thought of that yet! See, brainstorming together is what makes the best ideas. Sadly, not even another kind of metal would be able to protect the Peacekeepers from the worst Eldouir of them all, and we simply can't live without blood."
It often seemed like there simply was nothing they could do about the Eldouir and their gifts, especially because there was such a wide variety of gifts among them.
"Do you like the idea?" she asked with a little, sly smile. "I think it could benefit us greatly, but I need to find a professional way to describe the idea to the queen. Saying we want to farm their souls doesn't sound that good..."

The brevity of the matters did make her pause for a moment to think on her companion's words most deeply. Smoothing down the black silk threads woven into her hair, she replied,
"When I'm presented with a challenge, I break it down to its most basic parts and see the best way to reconstruct it to a proper solution. Yes, blood is necessary but it's also made up of mostly water, oxygen and iron as the strongest components. A multi-tiered enchantment controlling these three elements to encase the wearer and another to drink to protect from the inside will work." Rachel theorized and nodded at the woman's next comment.
"That can also be solved using the opposite method. When we want to eat, we do not say, it's time to kill an animal or destroy a plant. We only even rarely mention a recipe to reach the desired result."
Rachel sipped the tea and continued with a positive and reassuring tone. She nodded enthusiastically to Cordelia's question.
"I like it very much. I think maybe presenting it as 'We would like to give an opportunity to include the Gifted to take part in an important addition to our future enchantments.' It sounds encouraging and remains truthful."
These were exactly the sort of stimulating conversations she most enjoyed and Rachel nearly glowed with the happiness of their shared discourse.

Cordelia listened in silence, in awe of this young one's wisdom. Of course, you didn't become a minister out of nothing, and Arynnites were a smart people, yet this wisdom mostly came with age and Rachel was still young. Cordelia smiled a bit, and nodded.
"You're very wise, Rachel. I think you and I are going to have a lot of fun if we work together."
It was pleasant to hear that Chel liked her idea. It meant the king and one of his ministers already liked it, although Akagi hadn't said it with so many words.
"A very good idea. I will think it over, and go that route. Encouraging, but truthful. Of course, we always have an advantage with our enchantments. The other kingdoms can't get enough of them." She laughed softly.

Rachel blushed and wagged a playful finger at Cordelia's compliment.
"My parents say that lavish praise has the potential to corrupt the listener and the speaker. We're both Enlightened and a valuable part of Arryn Frey, each doing our best for our community."
Smiling and sipping her hot fragrant tea, she looked over at Cordelia, her obvious pleasure in the other woman's company apparent in her tone and expression.
"When someone is unenlightened, they tend most to want what they do not have, while forgetting the merit of what they already, in fact, possess."
Chel nodded to The Hand's question and replied cheerfully.
"Many ideas actually. I'm keeping things all derived directly from nature, as is the true essence of Magic. A Lorendaler, even Gifted, only knows the chaotic brawn of their Magic. We, however, work with the brains and intellect that Magic derives from which is far more complex than throwing about a strength. It's like they all wield large swords simply because they own one."
She chuckled and studied Cordelia's face.
"I would love to know more of how you came up with that clever idea of armor enchantment. It's an excellent foundation."
