The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

The elder let out a slight sigh, sipping at her drink. "I've reached a point in my life, when I have come to the conclusion that there's little point in hoping for a better future." She spoke the words grimly, but only left a brief pause before continuing. "There are only two choices. Either we let things drift by themselves, or we take action."
The elder's eyes came to rest upon her granddaughter. "That is what I hope you will be able to do. This kingdom needs people who are willing to make a chance, and stand their ground, even in the face of adversity." Helena was a Kane. She couldn't - wouldn't - criticize the queen openly. That was a little bit too close to treason. She could think though. Watch as the girl struggled to face up to the challenges in her kingdom, as they unfolded. "I can only ask that you take the utmost care when you do so. The nation is unstable at the moment. People will look to the top for guidance, and for blame."

Her grandmother was painfully realistic, and while Scout liked to believe there was hope in the future, perhaps it would do her good to be more like Helena. If you didn't expect anything, you could only be right or pleasantly surprised. If you were too hopeful, it would only lead to disappointment. Letting things drift by themselves had never been Scout's style. She liked to take action and try to decide fate as much as possible. She wouldn't be idly standing by while the kingdom went down the gutter. She wanted to help change it. But there was that same old hope again.
Her grandmother didn't need to say the words for Scout to understand, because she had felt the same way. She had actually said the words, to Iliana herself. She was still grateful that it had brought them closer, instead of pushing them apart. "I will do whatever it takes to help. That's what my duty is as an advisor. But I promise I will be careful. Politics are tricky, too. I have a lot of good people on my side, but I'm very aware of shifting sentiments and what the kingdom is up against."
She had finished her tea, and looked at Helena to see if she was about done herself. "I thank you for this get together, grandmother. It was very insightful to talk to you." She smiled and would go pay the kind barmaid for the tea, before returning to her grandmother. "Shall we go back to the estate?"

Helena was aware on some level that she should probably have spent more time with her family. She didn't have all that much of it left. Yes, there was Tiberius, and her nephew, and niece back in the south, but of her own children she only had Tybalt, and her two grandchildren remaining. As she wasn't getting any younger, she really should have made the effort to be with them a little bit more than they were. It was the closest that the elder of the household would ever get to guilt, or self-blame. After a few brief moments, the feeling was shaken off, as she reminded herself that it was duty which made more outings to a tea room impossible, and no self-respecting Kane would ever put aside their duty...
Scout was doing them proud though. If Helena ever did decide that the world could do without her presence, then it would be because of young women like her. There were a few others who worked within the palace who were somewhat competent she supposed. Although many of them in her eyes were rather untested, or of dubious origins. She'd heard about the appointment of the new gifted advisor... "Yes, well you also have men like your uncle on your side, as if you needed the handicap." Helena could help but remind her.
The rest of the conversation was pleasant enough, the sort which they didn't engage in enough. "Yes. We've had enough time to right the wrongs of the world. Time to actually do something about it." It was time to leave, to go their own way, and get back to their tiredless, and neverending work.

If it had been someone else, Scout wouldn't have appreciated the constant remarks about her uncle, but this was Helena, and Scout knew that she loved her son.
"Exactly", she said with a soft chuckle. She would hook her arm through her grandmother's and walk out of the establishment.
