The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

Scout had been polite enough to inform Levi Wyndham that she would be stopping by Wyndham estate by sending a letter a few days prior to the day she'd head down there. With everything that was going on with Fischer Wyndham and the Sons of Equinox, she realised that she wasn't very familiar with other members of the Wyndham family. Getting together for a chat with Fischer's brother only seemed like the logical thing to do then. In order to not head down there with prejudice against the man, she had not heard around to hear what kind of man he was, or what the general opinion on the Wyndham family was. What she did do, however, was being a guard that would wait outside of the room the two of them would be talking in. If he were to ask about it, she wouldn't bat an eye when she told him it was purely a precautionary measure.
After the guard and Scout had arrived at Wyndham estate, they handed their horses over to a help that would take care of the animals for them. The small blonde made her way over to the front door, knocking firmly before taking a step back to wait for the door to be opened by either a servant or Levi himself.

Levi knew he had a visitor coming, but he didn't know about the guard, not that it mattered. He had always been the least violent of the Wyndham's, having only broken his oath of nonviolence to defend a woman's honor. He wasn't entirely sure what was going on or why someone wanted to meet him today, but he wouldn't deny them.
He'd attempted to dress decently, but his recent depression left his clothes loose and ill fitting. His eyes were dark and sullen, bloodshot from the amount of times he'd cried. His fingers were stained with dark blotches from ink he'd spilled and been using in all his writings. All said, his attempts to look like a proper gentleman just made him look like a slob.
When Scout arrived, she'd be led down the corridor to the study, where Levi was sitting behind his desk. He glanced up from the parchment in front of him when he heard the door open, first to Scout, then to the guard, then back to Scout. He rose to his feet, extending an arm towards the seat on the other side of his desk. "Please have a seat," he offered quietly.

If Scout had been aware of the fact that Levi had only ever broken his oath of nonviolence to defend a woman, she would greatly admire him. She could be considered a feminist, for as far as that went during medieval times, and considered woman to be much more important than the roles they often got. A man defending a woman instead of standing idly by while her honour was brought down, was something she appreciated.
The door was opened by a servant, who brought Scout and the guard towards a study. The servant didn't announce their presence once they got there, but it also didn't seem to be necessary, for Levi was already looking up at them. When he got up, Scout took him in. She didn't know what she had expected exactly, but it wasn't this. She had thought that Levi would be an impressive looking fellow but instead she saw a man with clothes that were a tad too big for him, dark circles around his eyes. She could see that he had attempted to dress up, but it somehow didn't really work out for him. That being said, she didn't pay too much attention to the way someone was dressed because she didn't dress the way most women did anyway. She mostly wore pants and a blouse, like she had done when she was in the military.
"Thank you for seeing me, sir Wyndham", she said before gesturing towards the guard that he could wait outside of the study. She sat down and made herself comfortable in the chair. "I'm aware that I have been a little vague about my reasons for visiting you. I suppose it's not difficult to guess why I've come to see you. We all know the sentence your brother received, but I didn't see you at the trial. Why is that?" She tilted her head a bit to the side.

Great. An interrogation. If they'd wanted that, why not just call him to the palace?
Levi sighed, holding his head in his hands. "Levi, is fine," he corrected when she called him 'Sir.' "I was only vaguely aware of the trial that occured. I do not know the sentence, unfortunately."
He honestly didn't want to know. "Listen. In the past years, I have lost my mother, most.of my family, and the woman I loved, all in one way or another. My heart is in tatters and I'm barely holding it together as it is. If you were the only one who was doing everything right in your family, and yet still had to suffer and watch everything you once loved and cherished crumble around you, do you honestly think that I, barely living as it is, would be able to survive more terrible news regarding my family? It would seem that all I have left is this estate and my title. Even then, the Wyndham name has garnered quite the negative reputation. So, perhaps the estate is all that's left at this point."
He barely managed to glance at Scout. "Did you come here to simply ask such questions? Or did you come to arrest me for crimes I would not be guilty of? Because if you are, just kill me now, as I don't believe my fragile heart will last another day in this state." His eyes dotted with tears, and he allowed his vulnerability to show. He wasn't going to fight. He had no fight left.

Scout had debated whether she should have invited Levi over to the castle or not, but she preferred meeting at people's houses. It provided her with more information about them by taking in the surroundings and it also felt less official. She was gathering information for the crown but she was also a listening ear for the people and she didn't want to scare them off by making the visit seem too serious. The way the man in front of her behaved matched the vibe his clothes were giving off: defeated and tired. She raised an eyebrow when he told her that he didn't know the sentence and proceeded to be even more critical the more he spoke. He was a hollow shell, defeated by life and its ways. She hadn't known what to expect of Levi, but it wasn't this. She thought all Wyndhams had strong opinions, and although this one did have opinions, he lacked strength. How someone could live like this was unknown to her. His words were registered by the woman, but she could barely keep a stoic look on her face. His negativity just seemed to get a hold of her. Being around Levi sucked the will to live out of her.
The last part of her monologue really confused her, and she also felt sad for the man. How could a man be so broken? The small blonde leaned back and looked at him, staying silent for just a little longer. "Why are you still alive, then?" she asked. No bad intentions resided in the question, but it was her way of provokatively asking a genuine question. "I'm not sure what leads you to believe I'm here to arrest you for anything, unless you have something to do with your brother's ideas about Gifted."

Levi made a sound that was akin to a scoff and empty laugh. No one has asked him that before.
"Simple," he started. "I'm a coward."
He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. "I made a vow of nonviolence when I gave up being a knight. I broke it once, to defend the honor of a woman, and now I'm being punished for it." He looked at Scout again.
"I don't feel at all like my brother doesntowards the gifteds. Quite the opposite. I told him to leave Luna and her family alone, as her family were known gifteds. He promised she would be safe. Now she's..gone." His voice broke for a moment. "Her family has been attacked as well I've heard. If he was involved in that...after I warned him to stay away from them....then he's already dead to me, no matter what the verdict of the trial."
He was failing to stop the tears from falling. Just bringing up Luna hurt. Bringing up anyone who was lost hurt. And one family member who might still be alive, just might be dead to him already. He didn't care that he had a guest, he crumbled. He dropped his head to his desk, hidden behind his arms, and cried.

The ever so talkative Scout was, momentarily, at a loss for words. After merely a few second she did however regain the ability to speak. The woman's eyes had widened during the man's outburst of emotions and now she forced herself to put a serious expression back on her face, although she really had to keep herself from letting her eyebrows do what they really wanted to do: furrow. The empty laugh had turned into tears. Scout sat in silence for a while, allowing him to cry a bit before she'd speak. "Pardon my language, but this is about the most pathetic display I've ever seen", she then said, hoping the harshness of her words would pull him back to reality. "All I'm hearing is you lost someone you loved. Though luck. I must admit I don't know what it feels like to lose someone you love like that, but I know plenty of people - excuse me, functioning people even - that are living their lives even though they have lost someone."
The blonde leaned forward so she could make eye contact with Levi if he decided to look up from his desk. "You're saying the Wyndham reputation is in shambles, and yet you're acting like this?" She shook her head and leaned back again. "Everyone feels for you, but it's important to not feel too sorry for yourself. Otherwise you end up like... Well, this." She gestured at him. "When is the last time you left the estate? No one has seen you for weeks, if not months. Given the fact that you say Fischer is already dead to you, I won't bore you with the verdict. But it's time to pick yourself up and do something with your life, Levi. This can't go on like this. You're the Wyndhams last hope and you're just throwing it away like it's nothing. That's cowardly." Maybe some tough love could drag him out of the hole he had dug for himself. If not, she hoped none of her words would reflect badly onto herself later.

Levi managed to calm himself down enough to look at her. She was right about many things, many not on the amount of people he'd lost, but he was doing nothing more than wallowing in self pity. But what else could he do?
"You don't understand. Every time I finally begin to pick myself up, something comes along and knocks me back down. I don't know what else to do with my life. I'm a historian, it's not a job that requires me to leave the estate much unless I choose to. And lately, I'm lucky if I find the energy to make it into this study."
Or eat. Or bathe. Or live. He wanted to, but he was scared to try again even for a little bit.

Scout sighed very deeply and leaned back in her chair. She slapped her knees in defeat and blew a lip raspberry. It seemed genuine, but it was all theatre and acting. "I suppose you're right, there's nothing else left for you to do out there in the world", she said with a serious tone although the words dripped with sarcasm. She pretended to get up to see if he would ask her to remain seated or not. "I'll just let everyone know that Levi Wyndham is already a dead man, we just have to wait when he decides to tie the noose." She couldn't imagine someone was able to wallow in so much self-pity. It was just so pathetic to her.

The woman got up from her chair, stood behind it and placed her hands on the back of it.
"I want you to snap out of this and get back outside. The reputation of the Wyndhams lies within your hands and you're rotting away in your study. The world is still out there, and it hasn't changed that much. Get yourself together."
With that said, Scout turned to leave and walked out of the door, back to the palace.
