The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
It was the morning after the fiasco at the queen’s address that Augustus summoned his niece. His niece? He’d never really thought of Florina as such, but he supposed it was technically true. Phaedra was the one with the fondness and connection, but he and the girl were hardly strangers. Phaedra had always been careful about keeping her family rather insulated from her husband—or at least, Augustus had always perceived it that way. What her reasons were, he did not know, and at this present moment, they were immaterial. Phaedra had assured him that she did not know of Florina’s… condition, and Augustus believed her.
Seeking a change of scenery, Augustus had told Florina to find him in the gardens. The brilliant blooms of spring and early summer had faded, only a few hearty flowers hanging on despite their diminished beauty. When Florina arrived, she’d find the prince at a table that had been set for afternoon tea—as if yesterday’s events had never occurred at all.

Florina had hardly slept a wink that night. Both because of what happened, and because her skin still burned from the burst of flame that had come from the witch. So to say that she was dismayed that her aunt’s husband wanted to speak with her in the gardens was dreadfully unwanted would be an understatement.
She’d expected that he’d want to speak with her. One couldn’t reveal that they were in fact gifted and expect everything to continue as normal. That would be insane. However that morning, she dreadfully wished that there was a little more insanity in the world because she really did not want to talk to him about it. Would he send her home? Would he try to entrap her into service to the king? The king was probably already going to do that, but she expected it of a monarch that wished to stay alive. Family was a different thing altogether, even if the family in question was by marriage and not by blood.
But she had to face the music no matter how the tune went, and she would do so with dignity. So she smashed cool water on her face in an attempt to put some life in her eyes and wore a deep green dress made from a soft fabric as a concession to the burns on her skin. When she was presentable, she would go to the garden where her uncle waited for her.
When she drew close enough, she would curtsy, “Hello Uncle,” she would say and would sit unless instructed otherwise.

“Florina…”
Augustus smiled broadly, standing to greet her with a kiss on the cheek. They were family, after all, and it only served him at this time to reinforce that fact. He offered her a place to sit and sat as well. One of the servants stepped forward to pour them both tea. Augustus remained silent during this time, studying Florina with curiosity before the servant stepped away to give them privacy.
“How are you?” Augsuts said, making conversation lightly as he sipped his tea, “I hope yesterday’s events have not left you too unsettled.” However…how could they not?

The friendliness of her uncle’s greeting threw her for a loop. She’d expected a stern brow, perhaps a lecture. But he was acting as if they’d seen something rather unpleasant whilst taking a turn about town. She tried to recover enough to assume her usual elegance as she took her seat.
“I am as well as can be expected, given what happened,” and la, what a day it had been, “I confess, if it were not for the burns that still linger on me, I would think it a rather horrible dream,” a nightmare, really. The cacophony had rubbed open a jagged scab on her soul, memories of her late husband hurting her…not to mention new wounds, like betraying her childhood friend—unintentional, but still a betrayal. Sleep had not come easily that night.

“A horrible dream indeed,” Augustus sighed, sipping his tea, “If only it were one from which we could awake. As it is…” The prince sipped during his pause, eyes never once leaving Florina, “We will have to do our best to move forward, wiser and with renewed purpose.” He let the statement linger in silence for a moment, as if it were to impart something significant before he adjusted in his chair and continued with the same easy tone.
“I must warn you, your aunt is rather cross with you, Florina,” He grinned handsomely as if he and the woman in front of him were co-conspirators against a common enemy, “She’s never liked surprises. Phaedra far prefers being on the inside of secrets that need keeping. Anything else, she’s bound to take personally. Me, on the other hand…” Augustus took another sip.
“Me? I can understand why one might keep things close, even if it’s inconvenient for me personally. I believe that to be the case with your gift, my dear. I can understand your reason for keeping it hidden, however inconvenient the aftermath might be for us both.” Augustus considered her.
“I hope to save you some of that inconvenience, so long as you are willing to work with me to do so.”
Phaedra could be the bad cop. He intended to be the good one - so long as it worked in his favor.

The thought that her favorite aunt would be very cross with her brought no small amount of stress. Of course, what did she expect? She would have been upset if she found out that her aunt was keeping a secret like that from her, especially with how close the two of the were. She would have to speak with her aunt soon to see how much mending needed to be done for their relationship.
Even so, she wondered if her uncle were not exaggerating her aunt’s ire, given the offer he was placing so temptingly in front of her, “I am surprised you are not angry with me, Uncle,” she said, “But I am grateful for your understanding of my secrecy. I must say that I am curious of what you wish of me,” she was on her guard, although she tried to be subtle about it, drawing all her training in keeping greater emotions under the teapot. It wasn’t the done thing to let the other person know you were nervous. Plus, having had a brute of a husband that she had to watch herself around had only honed her own version of a poker face.

Augustus smiled and shrugged, his manner still one designed to put Florina at ease. “Anger hardly seems practical given the current situation. And I aspire to be a pragmatist—with mixed success of course.” Augusts winked at her good-naturedly. With his tea emptied, unbidden stepped forth to fill it. He’d also top off Florina’s cup before immediately retreating to his respectful distance.
“Your gift uniquely situates you to help us with what seems to be our primary predicament: there are gifts out there that we do not know of, whose gifts we do not understand. They are creating a culture of fear in Lorendale and sowing seeds of suspicion that will target the registered, law-abiding gifted who do not deserve it.” He sipped, growing more serious.
“We must actively seek out these transgressors, and with you as advisor of gifted, I believe we’d have the chance to do it right.”

She’d been expecting quite the scolding, but his understanding of her reasons caused Florina to start to relax, although her guard had not dropped yet. That was not something she dropped easily in the presence of men, family or no.
As she listened to his words, the uneasiness that had started to drop began to rise again. It was just as she feared! Of course he wasn’t angry…opportunist that she was beginning to suspect that he was, he meant to use her ability for their own gain…she’d be trapped, used! She’d be…
She dug her nails into the palm of her hand under the table and forced herself to take a deep breath, willing the panic that was rising in her belly to cease so she could actually hear his words. He certainly did want to use her powers…but if she was understanding correctly…it would be for a position at court?
“So…” her voice came out small and willowy, “You don’t want to use me to hunt down the gifted? She had to be sure of what he was saying so she knew what she would be agreeing to. She never wished to be a hunter, all she wanted was a quiet life…but how could she deny this? Would she be able to say ‘no’? “What exactly would you be expecting of me, uncle?”

Augustus's brow furrowed in sincerity. Hunting down gifted? Correctly or incorrectly, he hadn't thought of her task in those terms. Augustus did not seek suffering or persecution, merely safety for his people (though perhaps to others, that may appear an injustice).
"Not hunt down gifted, no," Augustus said, "Only give us a fuller understanding of incidents or situations when they arise. To assist in an investigatory capacity -- one that might prevent people with malicious intent to live among us unknown." He started again, seeking to add new framing to his ask.
"You are uniquely positioned to be an ally and an advocate, Florina. I have no doubt that many gifted seek to do the right thing. You can give them protection from those gifted who would restrict their freedoms with their misdeeds. Ones like Elena Eldouir."

His words…made sense. She remembered hearing whispers of discontent that the crown had not had a proper representative of them, and her taking he position certainly would not be a bad thing if that was the case. His offer was reasonable enough that her guard started to drop along with the instinctual panic that she’d gained from her marriage with her late husband. Still, she had learned to be wary of powerful men. First with her late husband who took every opportunity to strike and belittle her, and again with the discovery of her former suitor, Count Ellery who had been decidedly anti-gifted and—she had begun to suspect at the end of their courtship—a tendency toward shortness in temper.
Another steadying breath, then, “Your offer is very flattering, uncle, but I do wonder if I truly am the right person for a position of such import,” a pause as she considered her words. She did not know how much he knew of her treatment from her husband and how it had effected her, “I’ve become rather…” skittish, traumatized, scared, “…nervous. I would hate for that to effect any good relations the crown is trying to make with the gifted population. And,” she realized that her eyes had fallen to her hands, so she lifted them to meet Augustus’ gaze, “It is because of me that a gifted now sits in prison,” her childhood friend, but she did not say that, “I am not sure how popular I would be.” She shook her head, “I am not rejecting the offer, but I only wish to point things such as these out in case…” she let the words fall away, not entirely sure how to end the sentence.

”You will have your aunt to help guide you,” Augustus said patiently, “If there was ever a woman who knew how to navigate choppy political waters, it’s Phaedra.” He smiled a little, as if with affection. He meant what he said. Phaedra was one of the most skilled creatures of court; despite their romantic estrangement, they’d remained close partners in that regard.
“You musn’t blame yourself for Miss Dumont. Her sins are hers and hers alone. But you do have an opportunity now to prevent such a thing from happening again…so long as you take it. For I believe you more than capable.” He indicated for more tea to be poured, and the servant obliged.

Florina nodded, finally starting to feel at ease. She even managed a weak smile. Yes, her aunt would help her, as she always did.
Of course, she knew that Oriana’s situation was due to her own actions, but the feeling of guilt did not leave. She supposed she’d have to learn to deal with that feeling, for if she had allowed Oriana to do what she had intended, and with the whole room already knowing what she could do, she probably would have been in the jail cell with her just then. She wanted to inquire about her secret childhood friend, but forced back the urge. It was not the right time to ask. So she simply nodded her head.
She watched the servant refill her cup. She tried not to show any sign of agitation, pulling on all her training to appear as composed as possible. When the servant backed away from the table, she would say, “If it will help others, uncle, then I accept.”

Augustus smiled widely. His optimism was genuine. Honora Allemeade had been a catastrophic failure of an investment. She, after all, was not a creature of court. She’d been the queen’s governess, sure, but that was not the same as one who had real standing and connection to the rise and fall of the crown. Florina could redeem her kind, he thought. Be a real force to help him and the crown hold the country together.
“Thank you, Florina,” Augustus said, sipping his tea, “I shall instruct your aunt to meet with you and offer her aid. I plan to visit Allemeade Keep to tour it in a week’s time, and I should like for you to accompany me.”

“Allemeade Keep?” She tried to keep her voice neutral as if she were only curious, but she was anything but. Hadn’t Oriana been engaged to an Allemeade? Was Allemeade keep the home she’d told Florina about? Would she be welcome there? She wanted to decline, say that she could not go, that she was still recovering…but she did not dare. She did not know what the consequences to denying anything would be just yet. She’d not spoken to the king or the queen, and she wasn’t sure of her standing after such a revelation—although it couldn’t be that bad since she was offered this position, “I will be delighted to come with you. What will I be expected to do?” She imagined writing down names in a notebook, but surely it wouldn’t be so simple?

“Allemeade Keep is the largest settlement of gifteds in Lorendale—so much as we know, anyway,” Augustus continued, still gregarious but glad to be on to business, “Remiel Allemeade has extended a hand of partnership, and I’m happy to take it…so long as he remains cooperative. I want to see what’s within those walls. If they’re harboring unregistered gifted, better know now.” He smiled.
