The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Othello might not realize it, but today was the first day of the rest of his life.
Regan had set up a training ground for the two of them, a place tucked away from the rest of the military milieu. It reminded her of her days in the Ranger program. A pang of nostalgia hit her as she stepped onto the turf, but she buried the feeling deep. Those days were behind her, and the task in front of her would be hard enough without dwelling on the past.
There was a line of archery targets set up on the far side of the field, about fifty yards away. There was a bucket of crossbow bolts set close to them on a bench. The two guards that had accompanied them would take a place out of the way, watching but far enough that they wouldn’t interfere. Regan would put down her pack and turn to Othello with a lopsided grin.
“You gonna try to kill me, Othello, or are you ready to get to work?” She was partially kidding, partially not. More than anything she was trying to lighten the mood. Regan had a lot riding on this, and nervous didn’t even begin to capture just what she was feeling.

Othello looked like a "polished turd" perhaps, he was wearing his uniform for the first time since his fitting and he personally felt handsome as hell. He had shaved his face, cleaned out from under his nails, and was now showing a thin layer of blonde growing on his once bald head. People still stared and he still smiled, his head had been in their current space this specialized training. If he was going to be on the front lines against the Eldouir and Dresmond (a people he knew zero about) he was going to take this serious, he wanted to prove not only his past wrong but the King as well because the man thought very little of Othello.
He didn't have a pack but his eyes surveyed the field, lots and lots of metal, but still with the collar clamped around his neck the gifted couldn't feel it. Having a collar was like having an itch that he couldn't scratch. Yet he hadn't complained, ground was given and he could piss freely meaning he spent less time frozen like a child in the corner. Was it trust? Well he hadn't strangled her as she slept so that was good.
Her comment brought a chuckle, "I'm ready to work friend," he did cross his arms a curious brow arching, "am I to learn to use'a bow? A blade? Because I'll tell ya now, those tings won't madder fightin' Eldouir....I know personally havin' fought one meself and seein' 'nother in action...a shapeshifter... Rode on the back ov'a dragon."

“Nah, something better.”
Though her heart skipped a beat, Regan twisted the ring. Othello would be able to feel the metal around them now. She tried not to let the tension in her shoulders show, but her every muscle was primed to respond to an unexpected attack. Regan was inclined to trust Othello—she knew eventually she would have to—but the witch wasn’t there just yet.
“You don't worry about the Eldouirs just yet. For now...I want to see what your aim is like.” Regan picked up one of the bolts in her hand and held it out. “Can you lift it?”

He felt it instantly, subconsciously Othello was always reaching for that feel of metal again, it was just momentary but black spots in his eyes flexed in his pupils unknown dopamine was coursing through his brain. Then his eyes were locked on the bolt and then on Regan's he could only guess what she was thinking...
...giving him an inch, was he going to take a mile? Would bitterness about his enslavement win out causing him to drive that little bolt in her oddly slender little neck? Was he the same little piece of shit that would have done just that?
The bolt lifted from her hand.
"Child's play," he grinned, "I could lift all of'em at tha' same time too," he was cocky and his tone was issuing to be given a real challenge.

Regan raised an eyebrow as a grin spread across her face. She was a sucker for raw displays of power. Favoring brute force over finesse is what had gotten her into this mess in the first place. So, when Othello offered a more impressive display with a cocky smile, Regan couldn’t help but smile back.
“Let’s see it then,” Regan challenged back, stepping away to watch Othello in action.

And he did as he was asked, the good little doggo, as the bolts spilled from the bag circling in a flowing pattern like a school of fish caught in a strong current. Not a single bolt touched Othello as they danced around him, "Aim was it?"
Then it was like the whole collection of bolts were released from their master falling and just before the first few would hit the ground Othello sent them all down the field towards the dummy. They didn't sink, well not all of them, some struck, were pulled out to strike again and again shredding the dummy as a horde of piranha might break down a horse.

Regan tried to keep her expression neutral, and was mostly successful. Mostly, because when the bolts flew to strike the dummy they did so with such fury Regan thought they could be summonings, not inanimate objects. Her eyes widened ever so slightly as she watched the dummy fall to pieces.
“Alright then,” Regan said as if some matter had been settled. “Again. One at a time now.”
She’d put him through a variety of drills, not so much to test him but to learn the way his gift worked through observation. The two guards, who at first watched with great interest, started to tire and leaned up against the trees as they watched. Regan, however, remained intent. Hours went by as Regan pushed Othello nine hundred different ways until the light in the sky started to drop. Othello would be exhausted, and Regan would be beaming, the wheels of imagination spinning behind her eyes.
“Well…” Regan put her hands on her hips, “I think that’ll about do us for the day.”

Othello finally sat long ago removing the top of his uniform, he was sweating and yes he was exhausted but more mentally than physically it had been a long time since he had been pushed to use his gift as he had today. However he expected more was to come and he welcomed it because he couldn't explain how it felt to have that connection to steel or metal, he assumed all gifted felt the same.
He looked up at his glowing friend with a smirk of his own, "I didn't 'ear no bell," he barked with laughter and shook his head, "tis a good day o'work, gotta save some energy for Ögge. I kid. You got plans? She wants ta' git to know yuns."

“I believe ‘yes, ma’am’ were the words you were looking for.” Regan’s correction was kind but firm. Though she was learning the man’s gift, its strengths, and shortcomings, she was also learning areas where he required personal polishing. Decorum was one of them.
The extension of a personal visit had Regan raising an eyebrow, a reluctant smile pulling at her lips. Othello certainly was full of surprises, she’d give him that. “Perhaps another time,” Regan declined politely, “Enjoy your time with your family. Get some rest. Tomorrow, we start again.”

"Aye aye ma'am," Othello chuckled as went to rise from where he sat collecting his uniform top and slinging it over his shoulder, "women folk can cook a wicked dinner but, I git it, next time."
