Then do it. It wasn’t until Kaveri gave her his direction that Kester realized just how much she had wanted it. This entire conversation, both of them sitting together as they turned a mutual problem or idea over in their minds, had been something she missed more than she had ever fully acknowledged. But for the underlying, awkward tension that waxed and waned like the moon, they could have stepped back into the past. After all, how many times had they all gathered around a fire for discussions like this? Too many to count.
First came the original plan, then came the contingencies. True to form, Kaveri moved on— and the correction he made had Kester’s breath catching painfully in her throat.
Yeah, She agreed, shoving aside the hurt that blossomed at the aborted and quickly changed sentence. Well, you and Nephys know, She said instead. So that’s something. It felt weak, and it was. Once upon a time, that would’ve been all the support she needed. Now, however, she was neither confident in Kaveri’s reliability nor aware of another person she could turn to for back up. I can find someone else, too, but I should probably meet up with him soon, in case he starts looking for other people. So… Kester took a breath, then began to share what little she knew the disconcerting man she’d spoken to that afternoon.
Theres a street of vendors - I can show you - where he said he likes to go for breakfast and lunch. He told me I could find him there or talk to the man in a book shop in a square with a fountain that’s at the end of the road we’re on. Kaveri would have seen what direction she came from and been able to put the pieces together. He probably spends the rest of his time around the palace. But she couldn’t know for sure. He’s a big man, but he moves quietly. He’s about this much taller than me and probably twice my size, with brown hair and a beard. She paused as a thought struck her. You could see what he looked like if you were there, too, when I meet him again. It wouldn’t be much, but it’s something.
