The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

(this thread is for @torsten )
Othello stood in front of his wooden foe, the helpless weaponless little wooden man! He was pouring sweat from his entire body as he held the great steel axe Regan had made for him, in his wake was the wooden man's friends and family broken shattered and splintered remnants of the destruction the large collared Gifted man could do with out his gift. His chest was heaving in a deep breathe when the axe and the man behind it went to work each blow was inches deep and it was chop! Whack! Chunk of wood rolling to the ground! Chop! Whack! It smack the other side...he was totally obliterating the wooden dummy in front of him. He was unaware of everyone staring, hell that anyone was there. His power and rage turned into a chorus of loud fury! When he struck the pole on which the dummy sat splitting it in two Othello swung a complete three sixty beheading it before it hit the ground....
Torsten was too damn tired to notice much of anything unless it was right in front of his face. And it wasn't the kind of tired that sleep could fix. Just as he'd gotten to know what was probably only one of the two whole people he considered friends in all of Nevermere, she'd been thrown out. And then to have his own mortality smack him in the face with the Captain's training session, Tor wasn't in a good place. But mentally, he wasn't sure he could pull himself together enough to care.
A large hushed crowd had gathered in the solo practice ring which was an unusual occurrence, but not enough in itself to even raise an eyebrow. But he needed to walk through that crowd to reach the other side of the military wing.
Standing a full head taller than anyone, Torsten noted the single only other man in Nevermere that didn't make him feel like a freak of nature for being so tall--it was Othello! Torsten paused, mid-stride in his recognition and he forgot the crowd of average sized people between, bumping into quite a few before he reached the large warrior.
"Othello! There's easier ways to make kindling for fires you know!" Tor called out, in his own version of a joke. He spared a glance around him, wondering why everyone was just staring at a guy working out. They seemed .. afraid? Nervous? Why would they? Othello was a decent honest guy and essentially what you see is what you got. What was all the fuss about anyway?
From his full height he met the eyes of a few of the soldiers closest to them and they looked away and backed off, as if caught staring at something awful. Torsten didn't fully understand it, but subconsciously, he knew that sometimes just being taller made stupid people fear you for no reason. And that was part of the reason why he and Othello had had such a fun time at the tourny. Killing monsters together!

The familiar voice had Othello's head turning after his brutal display against his wooden foe a familiar smirk on his face, "Tor! Friend come here let me get a look at you!"
The equally big Gifted man sunk his axe deep into the remaining bits of the wooden dummy remembering that even though himself and Torsten had finished relatively in last at the tournament the pair had totally wrecked some summoned creatures.
Othello didn't care about folks staring at him and he always wondered why should he? He had been marked a suspicious man since his birth because his family was Gifted. He had been marked with suspicion his whole life so he walked tall and carried a big axe people were to cowardly to ever act stupid with him anyways, because even though he'd been tamed by the Huntsman Othello had that flip of a switch attitude. He could laugh with them one minute and punch them the next.
"Where have you been friend? I haven't seen much of you since the tourney, I have my own place now!"
Torsten stepped forward as the small crowd moved back and began to disperse. For Tor to treat the Champion of Nevermere as a fellow human instead of a freak to be stared at was just too much for their tiny minds so they left.
"I'm still me, I guess." he answered, looking at this friend's features to see that he was doing well. So much had happened since the tournament that it might as well have been a hundred years had passed before seeing each other again.
The large man's casual question gave Tor pause to think about it but he replied honestly and in a careful voice.
"I was under disciplinary measures for an act of insubordination."
He didn't want to linger over it as the whole ordeal had lasted ridiculously longer than what was needed. Comparing the action of one werewolf releasing witch at the ball, Tor's mild lapse wasn't even a hair on a fly's toe in comparison. But the damage was done and the only thing left was to trudge forward in total isolation.
"You got your own place? That's great-I'm happy for you! You must be so proud! Tell me all about it. Where is it? How'd you find it? What's it like inside?"
Tor kept up a flurry of questions to throw at Othello, hoping to keep any questions off of himself. For a third of a season, he'd done nothing but work, eat sleep and now with the Captain Commander's recent announcement, it was just more of the same. He had nothing to report to anyone about anything because every day and each night blurred exactly the same as the one before and the one after. Seeing Othello was the only new thing he'd done in seven or eight weeks.

The volley of questions had Othello momentarily caught off guard but he recovered quickly, "I did, little place, modest and it's beside the Van Zants place...if you know them," he beamed, "it's been nice not being cramped into such close quarters with the Huntsman," he moved closer to whisper, "between us friend, she's a big snorer," she wasn't but she had complained about Othello's terrible 'wake the dead' snoring, "No leash just a collar now," he let a finger ting off the gold collar around his neck, the biggest thread that had kept Othello obedient for so long, "annnnywaaays," he said in a sing song way to move on, "Kat Winters and this Abbott fellow helped me find it. Benji likes it already ... So that's all that matters."
"That's great Othello, I'm glad for you. And you're right-as long as Benji likes it, that's the important part." Tor really was happy that the guy was finding his place in Nevermere, literally.
"It's good that the Champion of Nevermere is finally making a home here. And as for the Huntsman, I've only met her once, so I don't really know her." Tor said diplomatically. He was fairly sure the guy was joking about the snoring and Torsten wasn't about to go into specifics of getting chewed out by her the first and only time he'd ever met the woman.
Winters? The one who had such a bad attitude about training?! Hmm Tor said nothing in response to her name.
His brown eyes lingered on the collar as Othello brought it up and for a minute he wasn't sure what to reply.
"Yea, no leash, that's good. You're a free man here." he said, wishing now more than ever, that he had a reason to stay in a corrupt and disorderly military. Othello had been through so much but he didn't let it get him down. Torsten wondered if having strong magic made a guy happier. "You're a good man Othello. I don't really know the Van Zants, but I hope your new neighbors appreciate you. Maybe I should stop by to visit sometime."

Othello laughed, "Free man is a nice way of putting it Tor," he would clap his friend on the back, "stop buttering me up pal, if my head were to get any bigger I won't be able to leave the palace, plus house warming party, you are invited. Its small. Just a few folks I've come to...care about here, kept me from doing bad things I could potentially get into," he was staring at Tor as if willing the young man to say yes.
"Butter up? I don't do that. I'm not good enough with words to do that. And I always mean what I say."
A party? As in informal crowd of people? If anyone else on Terra Nova had mentioned it, Tor would have just turned and walked away with a polite but no thank you, hard pass. Then when he went to look at him, it again made him glad that he didn't have to look down at anyone's head just to talk to them.
"Uh. a house warming party...um thank you for the invite. I'll have to find out where you live now for sure." He said, trying to be social about it. But he was so bad with words.
"I'll be there." he assured Othello, a small almost smile played across his lips for a fraction of a second.

"Good! Good! You'll need to only bring," Othello fished around in his tunic pockets before pulling a bag of coins, "Get something for a lady in her late twenties, anything, don't matter, this will cover it yes?"

Othello actually wrapped the young man into a big hug, "Good! Good! Thank you Tor, I promise you'll have a great time buddy, I'll send a invite when it's close," he let go and clapped Tor on the shoulders, "keep your head up okay kiddo, I expect to see you around more bud. I've got to go, even the Champion has his orders."
The large Gifted man would turn and go, tall and straight without a care in the world.
Before he knew what was happening, Othello had Torsten in a hug and he clapped an awkward hand to the guy's back, unsure of what to do exactly. He'd seen people hug before but it just wasn't something his family did. He listened thoughtfully and nodded,
"Yes sir." he answered readily enough but his eyes and thoughts still lingered most uncomfortably on Othello's collar as the man walked away. Was the Champion 'free' if he was still wearing a collar? Torsten had thought that Othello had been rescued--which meant no more collared life of indentured servitude, didn't' it? Weren't they beginning a war to stop Gifted people exactly like Othello from being collared? It was a lot to think about. Tor would definitely try to bring that up at the party and find out the full story on that because something didn't quite add up.
