[ This thread will provide ongoing documentation of Augustus's use of his mirror ]
It didn’t take long after the queen’s speech for word of Myla Eldouir’s supposed appearance to reach the prince. Augustus asked after the queen immediately but was informed that she was meeting with the king and that it was requested he meet with her tomorrow morning. The king. The prince’s discontent would be evident to the unfortunate messenger, lasting only a moment before he dismissed the man and made for his study.
Leaving his guard on the other side, Augustus stopped just short of slamming the door as he secluded himself in his office. They were losing control. Perhaps Myla’s appearance was real, perhaps it wasn’t, but either way, the fear in Lorendale was real enough. You could feel it in the air like a faintly shimmering vibration. And yet here he was—nearly powerless to do anything about it. Cassian, meanwhile, was upstairs, bending Iliana’s ear, reinforcing his agenda. Augustus paced for a moment in frustration, running a hand through his hair. Back and forth he went until he’d sufficiently calmed and stopped in the center of the room.
The prince’s thought process shifted his features from consideration to resolve.
After locking the door, Augustus went to his desk, sat in his chair, and slid open a drawer. He opened the false bottom to reveal the hidden compartment. The mirror was there—the one Annabeth Porter had given him so freely. The prince took it out gingerly as if it might fall apart in his hands.
Gazing into it, he spoke to it just as Annabeth had instructed.
“Show me Cassian Rainecourt .”
Just as before, the figure he sought appeared on the glass. Augustus watched. While there wasn’t much he could glean, he continued to gaze into the glass until he decided there were other matters he should likely attend to. The prince would continue over the next days to spy on the king, stealing time in the quiet of his office to gaze into the glass.
