The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

[ For @warren ]
Hadrian could have strangled her. He accepted Brenna Delaney’s request of course, but secretly cursed the family’s name. At the time, Kennet’s letter had not yet been delivered. His calculation had been a selfish one: to deny Brenna’s request would risk upsetting her, and therefore make her more violently opposed to his and Kennet’s marriage. Hadrian wondered if Brenna knew that would be the case when she asked. He also wondered that when she asked, if she knew that Kennet would shortly thereafter end their engagement that never quite was.
Either way, it didn’t matter. Grant was out of commission, Kennet was gone, and all that was left was to pick up the pieces and move forward.
Shortly after returning Brenna’s correspondence, he called for Warren. He’d be allowed into Hadrian’s office and invited to sit.
“Captain, thank you for coming on such short notice. I’m afraid there’s been a change in plans.”
This was one of those rare times that Warren had no idea what to expect from being called to Hadrian's office. As far as Warren could tell, he and Lieutenant Abbott had been carrying out his orders exactly as they'd been given. The soldiers were on a stricter schedule. Those who showed blatant disregard for order, responsibility, and training were set to staff duty. Those who persisted in misbehavior were released. Training schedules themselves had been altered to better fit these new guidelines, and nothing was being overlooked. Warren had made damn sure of it.
But, he supposed, there was always something.
As he stepped inside the office, he took a seat in front of Hadrian as he had done multiple other times, resting his hands in his lap. "Of course, Commander," he said with a nod, though his brows lifted in response to the second part of his statement. "A change of plans, sir? In regards to what?"

Hadrian’s irritation would be veiled—but only just. A deep sigh whistled through his nose before he sat up in his seat and got down to it. The sad fact was it didn’t seem like you could get good help these days. Couldn’t count on anyone…not even a Delaney.
“Grant Delaney has left the service.” Hadrian gave the statement a moment to settle in without elaboration before moving on. “I need someone I can trust in Cambria to see the instillation of Governor Ellis goes smoothly. So, I’m sending you.”
He paused, waiting for an acknowledgment before he carried on.
Warren didn't bother to hide the surprise on his face. A Delaney voluntarily leaving the service wasn't just surprising, it was unheard of. Good reason or not, the man had just been promoted and like with all promotions, he would have been assigned a new set of responsibilities. Had he really just up and left it all behind, leaving the military - and Hadrian - to figure out how to best rearrange the pieces?
Cambria. Right. He had been made the new field sergeant and therefore, had likely been expected to do what Hadrian was now asking of him. "I understand," he said with a single nod. "I'll see to it."

He expected nothing other than unquestioning acceptance of the task from Warren and was not disappointed. It was comforting to know that amid so much uncertainty there were a few things that he could depend on (Aldrich and Warren among them).
“The king has ordered Miss Lassiter and Othello Allemeade to retrieve a…person of interest. Perhaps Mis Lassiter has learned her lesson since the fiasco in Coheed but,” Hadrian realized that his disdain for Regan was starting to show, so he reigned it in, “You must be ready for if things go south. Since Isolde took the helm, Cambria’s leadership has been openly hostile to Nevermere’s assistance. If she were to be given reason to kick up a fuss…” Hadrian sighed, shaking his head. “Who knows.”
These were the kinds of things that put the gray in Hadiran’s beard.
“Offer Miss Lassiter assistance when asked, but ultimately your focus must be on Governor Ellis. I will give you the roster of soldiers who will be joining you in the transition.”
Regan had mentioned going somewhere, though she'd been vague. Now he knew that she was being sent to Cambria, along with Othello, to capture someone. And he'd heard whispers of plans to replace the current governor of Cambria with Tara Ellis, but had they planned exactly how this was all to go about? Warren's focus, for some time now, had been a back and forth between preparing the soldiers for war in Dresmond and preparing himself for possible hostility from Coheed once they began to rebuild Zulu Carr. Cambria was low on his list of priorities when it came to information, and in truth, he felt a little in the dark.
"I admit, I'm a little behind when it comes to information regarding Cambria, sir, but I do know Isolde has been a stronger leader. She likely has many devoted followers. Replacing her with Lady Ellis, even though she spent much of her time in Cambria, is going to be no small feat. I expect there will be backlash. I assume it is to be handled however is necessary?" Which likely meant violence. He couldn't see the woman stepping down voluntarily, especially not if they were already outwardly spurning Nevermere. But if he was going along with Regan and Tara, they could likely give him all the information he needed but didn't yet have.
There was more, though. "May I ask, sir," he added. "What of Zulu Carr, and the war with the Eldouir? Do we have new orders regarding those fronts?"

“However is necessary.” Hadrian let the words sit for a moment. Isolde was a ticking time bomb that needed to be diffused. Once he was sure that the message had been received, he’d move on with a sigh.
“The war with the Eldouir will be delayed,” He rubbed his temple, “For how long, that is for the king to say. But at present there are more than a few fires to be put out in our own backyard. Cambria among them.” He scratched his beard, trying to focus but finding the strain of the last few weeks making that difficult.
“As for Zulu Carr, you will travel there once you are confident that the political situation in Cambria is acceptably stable. Hopefully, you’ll be able to thread one needle as well as the other.” For surely both of these accomplishments would be quite the feathers in Warren’s cap. Though, on the flip side, failure would prove extremely problematic.
“There’s another element to this as well you should be aware of,” Hadrian would continue unless Warren had other questions.
However is necessary was the confirmation he needed. Warren only nodded in response to that. The two understood each other well, at least when it came to necessary violence. Isolde was to be removed, replaced by a Nevermeran governor, Lady Ellis. No matter what.
Delaying war with the Eldouir, though, tightened Warren's chest. He had no great desire to be a hero among the Dresmondi, free their people like some kind of savior and see to their sick and wounded. That was a fantasy. In reality, the Eldouir simply needed to be removed. The longer they put it off, the more dangerous the Eldouir would become. But perhaps Hadrian was right - they were stronger when their own territories were under control, and if there was trouble in Cambria, it could cause trouble for them during the war with the Eldouir. "I understand, sir."
Along with the Eldouir / Dresmondi conflict, the building of Zulu Carr was being put off. Once he finished handling the conflict in Cambria, he would move immediately there to handle that as well. Once more he only nodded his understanding. There was little more to say on the matter. Securing Cambria was more important than rebuilding a dead city. Take care of the fire already burning before starting a new one.
"Another element, sir?" He asked, unsure of what else there could be.

“The Cambrian’s restlessness is a symptom of a disease—an infection we must kill before it spreads,” Hadrian said, finding no problem in using such terminology describing the daughters of Cambria. Their barbarism was a disease; on that they needed ot be cured of.
“The Cambrians have failed to embrace Nevermerean ways and to instruct their daughters to do the same. So, it would seem we must do it for them. Once Odina has been installed, we will begin the process of transferring Cambrian girls who have not yet had first blood into Nevermerean custody to receive an…education.” It was a pleasant word for kidnapping. For forced assimilation. But the Nevermereans had been left with no other alternatives.
Warren was quiet for a while. Unsure of exactly how he would respond, how best to respond. Perhaps because he wasn't quite sure how he felt about what Hadrian had said. The Cambrians and Coheedsmen were barbaric in ways, yes, but forcefully taking their children from them...
Well, it wasn't Warren's place to judge what was right or wrong. If Hadrian was moving forward with this plan, the King must have okayed it, if he hadn't come up with it on his own in the first place. "Is Lady Ellis aware of this already?"

“Not yet,” Hadrian answered matter-of-factly, “She will be briefed on the plan before it is implemented. I’ll have you as part of that conversation, of course.”
Hadrian waited for further questions.

"I understand, sir," Warren said. He understood the information, that much was true. The need for such a task...well, the understanding of that evaded him. But it wasn't his call, it wasn't him to judge. He was a soldier, meant to go where he was pointed to go and do what he was asked to do. This was another one of those times. Besides, the Cambrian women were extremely strong and had a lot of potential. If they could also be educated and learn the discipline of a Nevermeran soldier, that would make them even more dangerous.
To whom, though, was the question. "Is there anything else?"

“No, nothing else,” Hadrian sighed, a weary sigh that seemed to emanate from his protesting bones. He was getting to old for this. Maybe, he thought, it was time to retire.
Hadrian chuckled a little as he laughed the thought off. Who was he without this? What life did he have?
“Thank you, captain. You’re an invaluable asset, I hope you realize that.”
Warren met Hadrian's eyes for a moment, then nodded. "I appreciate that, Commander. I'm just glad I can be of service." In that, at least, the two weren't so different. Their service to the kingdom was just about all that either of them had.

“Good.”
Hadrian would rethink this stance in the days to come, after the meeting about this apparent leak of information about Dresmond and the Eldouir. But for now, the commander was secure in the knowledge that Warren’s position had been well earned.
Hadrian would dismiss Warren, moving onto the next matter, for there was no shortage of tasks to be done.
