Like the child she was doing her best to emulate, @katerina offered a retort that had Ber rolling his eyes as he made to cross the room in long strides and shove past her to get to the table he was in the process of clearing off. Then, abruptly, @warren appeared with Artos in his arms and effectively blocked his way. Ber had only a moment to redirect his irritated gaze to the captain before he suddenly found his hands full of dog. Confusion broke through the hostility long enough to have him asking an uncomprehending “Wait, what?” before Artos answered the question himself by trying to lick Ber’s face.
The dog’s breath was rancid, and the soldier’s own expression crumpled into one of utter disgust as he dodged the canine kisses.
“You are disgusting.” Turning on his heel, he carried the dog back into the kitchen in search of some water. While he busied himself with this new task, Ber might have been out of sight, but he wasn’t out of earshot of the other room. He had just finished pouring some water into a bowl for Artos when he heard Winters’ retort at Woodwick and immediately wished he hadn’t. The sound of the dog lapping at his drink couldn’t drown out the venomous hiss that Regan Lassiter sent back, and the challenge did little to settle the undercurrent of upset irritation that coursed through Ber as well.
This was supposed to have been a fun occasion. Instead, the host was passed out in a drunken stupor somewhere in his own house and the rest of them stood here at each other’s throats. He had crouched down by Artos, but assuming Winters wouldn’t take Regan’s words laying down, he rose to his feet now and, shutting the door behind him to keep Artos in the room, exited the kitchen to take in the scene before him. Whether it was to attempt to stop the fight that might break out or to join in and release some of the tension that had his jaw clenching tight, Ber couldn’t quite say.
