The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

Scout had asked to meet with her uncle. She hadn't seen him since the wedding, and the only contact they had had after that was a letter about a festival she was planning for the Queen. It was still in its early stages, and would take a while before it actually happened. But other things had happened as well. The whole infidelity situation of Annabeth Porter. Luckily, it hadn't caused much trouble for the Kanes. She had a pretty big fight with Astor about it, because she told him he couldn't help her, but eventually they had agreed to see what they could do. Nothing much had happened after that. Annabeth was in another town, and the peace had returned.
The woman had also asked in the note for a friendly spar with Tybalt. She wanted to train some more. She didn't train as much as she wanted, and apart from a spar with Dresden and Ghyath, it had been a while since she really trained. Now that the pregnancy was terminated by bad luck (and some bone crushing, courtesy of Oriana), she wanted to get back in shape before she inevitably had to get pregnant with a child of Astor.
The blonde arrived at Birkhall and made her presence known. The staff knew who she was and didn't need an introduction, but they still showed her to where Tybalt was. It was common decency to show a guest to the owner of the house. Once they arrived, she would wait for Tybalt to let her enter the room.

To do so, it reacts to heightened emotional states such as fear and anger, at which point the armor will trigger regardless of whether or not Tybalt wants it to or even if he's immediately aware of the threat. It has some degree of awareness and sentience although very basic and one which struggles to differentiate between enemies and friends. Whilst not actually in possession of a will, the armor can guide or direct its host in a specific action, much like a reflex.
The armor needs to be "fed" as Tybalt has discovered meaning that he must hold and absorb through touch certain metals such as steel, copper, iron and tin, a process which takes a few minutes. Without which, the armor will begin to weaken and become less effective until no longer able to manifest.
Perhaps its greatest weakness is that if being consistently bashed or beaten, it would begin to repair itself by using parts of the armor from elsewhere. For instance, if the wearer is being consistently hit in the chest, the armor will begin to pool away from other parts of their body such as the feet and hands, leaving them vulnerable.

Upon arriving at Birkhall, it wouldn't take long for Scout to be swamped. News spread quickly of her arrival and the three Zane children, lead by Trinity, would be quick to find their cousin. They abandoned their studies in favor of charging through the corridors in search of their missing family member. When they finally did locate her, it would be to a cry of "Scout!" The young woman would find herself rushed by the trio. If she didn't stop him, they would charge her, wrapping their arms around her to pull her in for a hug.
Tybalt had been busy tending to his work as the commander. He was going through the lists of the known gifted, seeing who could realistically be called in for action and those whom they might be able to find some other productive use for. Anything to try and improve their public image and try to relieve some of the tensions which wracked the realm.
The sound of his children's cries and laughter caused the man to look up from his paperwork. He got to his feet. His aging husky Sky's ears pricked up as she got to her feet, following her master. Tybalt didn't linger, he would open the door and greet his niece with a warm smile. "Well, this is certainly a nice surprise." They did see one another around the palace of course but that was business, right now, the commander dared to hope that she had come here for something other than a political emergency which needed to be addressed. "How are you doing kid?" If the children got too roudy, their father might motion for them to calm themselves.

She had barely set foot inside when her three cousins came running her way. For just a second, the memories of the miscarriage surfaced, but the second those little grabby hands started pulling at her pants she forgot all about it. With a big smile on her face she would hug them all before lifting the youngest of the three. "You've gotten so big!"
Scout was still talking to the children and playing a little with them by poking and tickling them when her uncle appeared. She looked up and gently petted Trinity's hair to let her know she'd listen to the rest of her story in a bit. "I'm doing good, thank you. And you?" It was always nice to see her uncle. While he could be stern, especially in work related situations, he always radiated a warm energy when they talked.
"You said in your letter that the kids wanted to see me, and what kind of cousin would I be if I didn't visit as soon as I could?" She chuckled when the kids started to cheer again.

Tybalt smiled at the sight of his children and niece. It was a welcome change and release from his work. Even though he was still struggling to get his mind wrapped around the fact that his kids were growing up and no longer little babies to be found in cribs, that was to say nothing of Scout. He still couldn't quite come to terms with the fact that she was now a woman in her own right with a considerable amount of responsibility to boot. "You're telling me!" Tybalt couldn't help but chuckle. "Feels like every time I turn my back they're an inch taller!"
The man leaned back against the wall, watching his niece and children fondly for a moment. "Been busy trying to deal with this whole gifted/antigifted issue." The man didn't particularly care for discussing such things in front of the kids. Let them keep their innocence for a while. "What a mess we've created." He meant the kingdom as a whole. It was a frustration to Tybalt that they seemed to struggle so much with the basic task of getting along, especially when they had an enemy on their doorstep who would gladly wipe them all out in a second.
"Can I get you anything?" It wasn't terribly far from the palace to Birkhall - hence why Tybalt had accepted to move - but still the man decided to remain polite. "I'm sure my mother's around somewhere, although perhaps you might be better off hiding from her."

It was always nice to hear her uncle laugh. He seemed so stoic and serious all the time, but she knew how he could be when he was around his family. Her love for family had definitely come from him, because he had raised her as if she was a daughter and not just a niece. Scout chuckled as well.
"We sure have", she sighed. She wouldn't talk too much about work with him in front of the children. They should be allowed to be young and carefree for as long as possible, without having to care about political issues. If she could, Scout would take matters into her own hands to deal with the situation, but she also knew she wouldn't be able to do much. Even with the approval of the queen, and the help of the prince, she couldn't just magically get rid of the problem. Her current focus was on finding an Advisor of Gifted, but who was willing to take on that role?
The woman laughed again. "Come on, Grandmother isn't that bad to be around", she said. She liked spending time with Helena, although she could be a difficult woman from time to time. It was what she loved about her. She would be fighting, physically and verbally, until the very end. "I actually wanted to ask if you had time to spar for a bit. I haven't been able to train nearly as much as I'd like to."

Scout's comment about her grandmother could have caused the commander to laugh were it not for fear of his mother somehow hearing him. "Give it another twenty years in her company..." Of course Tybalt loved his mother, but that didn't necessarily preclude from him being downright terrified of her.
Tybalt's face would only brighten when Scout explained the reason for her visit. He had rather hoped it would something along those lines as opposed to another discussion about politics. It wasn't that he necessarily found them boring, although certainly the old soldier in him was more fond of action than he was of debates, but rather that he welcomed the opportunity to escape, if only for a few minutes. "You want to spar? Certainly. I could do with flexing these old muscles of mine." The commander should have been slowing down and he was to a degree, the Coheed blood and might that had been infused into him on the battlefield all those seasons ago allowed him to soldier on just that little bit longer though, having enough strength to compensate for that which the years inevitably took from him.
"Can we watch father?" Trinity asked hopefully. The man considered the question only for a few moments. He would glance towards Scout, unless she explicitly refused, Tybalt would give her a knowing but playful smile. "Only if your cousin agrees to let me win." Assuming that Scout had no complaints, the man would lead them towards the mostly empty courtyard.

His response made her smile, although it also made her a bit sad. Not because of the implication that Helena was a difficult woman, but because she feared her grandmother wouldn't be around for another twenty years. Time is fleeting, and she didn't want to think about not having her grandmother in her life anymore.
Before it could depress her, the topic changed to something more cheerful. Scout explained that she would like to train with her uncle, who seemed to be excited about the idea.
Scout laughed when her niece asked if they could watch the spar. She nodded lightly, trying not to show the kids that she agreed before their father could decide. "But of course", she said, grinning a bit. Her uncle was a skilled soldier and he would certainly have many advantages. Scout had been a good soldier as well, but she definitely trained less than her uncle did, or so she assumed.
So the blonde would follow behind her uncle and her nieces and nephews.

Tybalt would accompany Scout outside. The three children followed behind them, chatting excitedly about what to them seemed to be an epic battle in the making. The Commander was earnestly looking forwards to a quick spar. It wasn't that he hadn't had the opportunity to flex his muscles recently, there was always someone for him to train with around the palace. This was different though, it was a member of his family and whilst the aging soldier intended to take the session seriously, he also hoped that it might just possibly be fun. The prospect almost reminded him of his youth spent fighting with his numerous siblings.
They would head to the nearby courtyard. Having ensured that his children were accounted for and weren't about to take advantage of the trip outside to slip away, Tybalt would go to retrieve some practice weapons for them to use. He found some swords. They were made of steel but blunt and a good deal lighter to ensure that any training sessions wouldn't result in an unfortunate accident. "I assume we'll be skipping the horses?" If she wanted to try some mounted fighting, it wouldn't be a problem but it would of course take a little bit more time to prepare their horses.

Something about sparring with a family member was just so much nicer and comfortable than sparring with a friend or a soldier that had been unfortunate enough to come across Scout when she wanted a fight. With family it was more about enjoying it, but at the same time she knew her uncle would pay attention to his own and to her form and technique. It just wasn't as official. Especially not with an audience. The young woman smiled at her niece and nephews who were standing to the side, with supervision.
She 'gossiped' a bit with them while Tybalt was looking for equipment. She told them some stories from when she was young, and what their father had been like back then. Only good things, of course. She could see that the kids lover their father, and she was glad they did. Tybalt was a wonderful person, uncle, and surely also father.
When he returned, she faced him and nodded, confirming his assumption. "I think that would take too much time. I don't want to keep them out here longer than you had planned today", she said, referring to the kids, and how perhaps her arrival had shifted some things on the schedule.

Tybalt turned towards his children. "Well, they're supposed to be studying but I think we can stretch things and say this counts." Tybalt knew that he had a tendency to be a little bit too soft and easy-going where his children were concerned. Perhaps it was the fact that he'd waited so long to have them or that he knew how valuable these childhood years were and that they would be over far too soon but more often than not, the usually strict commander found himself usually bending to the will of the terrible trio. Already, following his announcement, he saw their smiles.
The father took off his enchanted bracers. He knew that if he tried sparring with them, they would instantly cover him with their armor. With a smile, the man handed them over to both Trinity and Tobey. Thaddius was still a little bit young to be trusted with them. "To be held, not worn!" The man cautioned the pair. They smiled, promising to be well behaved.
Tybalt would take his practice sword, swinging it a few times to try and become accustomed to its weight and feel. He stepped into the center of the square and waited for his niece to make the first move.

Scout smiled at the children when they took the bracers from Tybalt. All three of them were absolute darlings. It would be nice to spar with her uncle with a little audience to cheer her on. She stepped into the square as well, and twirled the sword around in her hand a few times to get a feeling of how heavy the steel actually was. She liked sparring with real, but blunt, swords. They were nicer than wooden swords.
Once she had gotten accustomed to the weight, she moved forward, aiming for het uncle's lower arm of his dominant hand. It wasn't an unexpected move, but she just wanted to get some movement in. If Tybalt blocked all of the attacks, she would still be satisfied that she managed to swing her sword around a bit.

Tybalt was having to adjust his fighting style as the years passed. He was no longer quite as young as he had once been and a number of old war wounds were, despite himself, beginning to take their toll. Not that he would ever admit as much. He knew that Scout had a few injuries of her own. That being said, he was reasonably confident that she would be faster than him. Strength though was one thing that he was certain he still had the upper hand with.
The commander would move to block her blow. She would encounter an unwavering wall of steel, enforced by the man's strength. The commander would give him an affectionate but still teasing smile: "Come on kid, I know you've got more than that." Tybalt had been egging people on for quite some time.

Her move had been predictable and it didn't surprise her that her uncle blocked it easily. She grinned at him and moved her sword back, breaking the collision between the steel. She then went in with a row of quick attacks, meant to make him move his sword a lot because they were coming from all sides.

Tybalt braced himself as best as he could. He knew that he could match Scout for strength, likely best her in fact. Speed however was another matter. When she sped things up, the man would change his tactics. His enhanced strength allowed him to wield his heavy longsword easily enough with just one hand, it was something that would usually have been cumbersome and impractical. He would move to block her attacks. It was something that required more effort from him these days than the man would typically have cared to admit. The commander would still manage a smile, informing his niece breathlessly but with clear amusement: "Not half bad!"
