The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

[For @keir]
Ben and Keir had been working together as royal guards for years now so when Ben found out that his brother had resigned to re-enlist in the standard military he had had mixed feelings about it all. It was on Keir's official last day as a royal guard that Ben finally got the chance to talk to him about it. They had both got off their shift at the same time and Ben jogged after Keir down the hall to catch up to him when he spotted him.
"Keir. Keir!" he called to get his brother's attention, his hand finding Keir's shoulder as he caught up to him. "Hey, what's going on?" he asked. "Why are you leaving the guard?"
Keir was off to pack his belongings from the Royal Guard barracks, a others had said their peace to Keir and wished him luck. He was just turning when he heard his name from a familiar voice and was reassured as his brother turned him asking him about his new assignments, "oh, nothing bad," he loved his brother but felt for a little time that he stole some of the Valor of Benedicts promotion first but Ben never complained to him about it and Keir had put it behind him, "It's for truly my own personal reasons: I want to be a soldier again. I'm bored here...I feel I can prove myself useful to them, reshape this military."

Ben had to admit that it was a relief that it hadn't been something more serious. He let out a soft chuckle in response as he settled into a more neutral stance. "Oh, thank the Goddesses," he said. "I thought you'd been sacked or something. I couldn't imagine what you might have done for that to happen," he said with another little laugh.
He could understand the sentiment that he was bored. "I daresay going back to standard service will give you more to do, that's to be sure." He clapped his brother on the shoulder. "I'll miss having you around so much, but if anyone can be of help, I have no doubt it will be you, Keir."
Good old straight edge Keir Delaney, he couldn't help but smile at his brother, "You know me well Ben," and his brother really did better than most, "But it's still good to have a Delaney to protect the Royal family," he admitted truthfully, "come on let's go get some food."
The pair would go and change before heading to the nearest tavern, "I'll be a Dad before to long, Val has been glowing lately...I'm excited."

Ben was never one to turn down the chance to go to the tavern, especially with company. They chatted along the way, Ben as jovial as he usually was. As the conversation turned to babies, Ben lit up at the topic. "Are you? I'm so glad. I've come to see that not all men are. It's a big change but you're going to be a great dad, Keir. You're going to love it," he said with a bright smile. "Nothing can compare to the joy a child brings into your life. A lot of work," he said with a laugh, "but a lot of joy."
They got a table as they stepped into the tavern and sat down. "Are you hoping for a boy or a girl?" Ben asked.
Keir was beaming as Ben said he'd make a good father, Val and their Mother thought the same but of course Keir had his reservations: he hadn't ever really been around children but he would figure it out as things came at him. Though a little voice in his head said things would be just fine.
Ordering a chicken and a pitcher of beer he grinned at his brother, "honestly? I hope for a little girl..."

While most men desired, or at least told people they desired, a baby boy, especially for their first child and heir, it seemed just like Keir to go against the grain. A girl. Ben smiled softly, and affectionate expression in his gaze. "Any little girl would be lucky to have you to watch over them. I don't envy the boys that will come around one day."
Keir grinned and chuckled pouring them both a mug of beer from their fresh pitcher, "It is a good thing I don't have the Curse then, that would definitely keep the boys away but I'll ponder on it," he teased, "might see if Val won't brush up on her curses, lingering side effects include pain and lack of...well all the bad things...Any ways, Mum is ecstatic. I think it's helped take her mind off things, dad too," he was speaking about Logan and Aunt Brenna.

Ben chuckled as Keir talked about curses and keeping boys away from his little girl. He could really imagine Keir as a father to a daughter, holding her in his arms, her hair dark and curly just like his as she held onto his finger. Yes, Ben was sure Keir was going to make and excellent dad. Probably even better than he was.
The reminder of the tragedy's that their family was stacking up made him shift in his seat. He usually tried not to think about it. Too much loss all at once. He had no idea that a more poignant loss would one day be revealed to him. Not that he didn't love his aunt and uncle but it was just different. "Yeah, good to let her hold on to some happier things."
He accepted the beer and took a nice long drink of it.
