The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
"Okay, so one-more time for me. We walk this route every how many minutes again?" Alden was glad to have Benedict training him some of the days while he adjusted in the palace. It was a lot to learn, new routes, new schedules, new faces. He was just glad to have some friends and maybe even some new ones. You needed to make a couple on the job, especially when you had to hide the occasional fever or day you could barely stand.
And while he didn't know the guy too well, he knew a little about Benny. Most people knew the Delaney's anyways, but old family names tended to know a little more. Part of Alden wondered if the guy was surprised he even made it through mandatory after his parents had shielded him for so long. Clearly for no reason, he was perfectly fine.
Alden had thought about bringing a map or something to take notes on, but then realized just how big of a mistake that would be. He was learning though, just would take a minute to catch on to the routine. "And all of this is with a partner for the most part?"

"Twenty," Ben replied with a charming smile. "Every part of this path overlaps with others and with everyone's routes they get covered at least every ten minutes or so." There were many more duties for a royal guard than simply walking this path all day every day but keeping a tight security on the palace was particularly important.
Ben didn't know Alden though he knew his family name quite well. It was a little strange that Alden had seemed so sheltered in his youth but who was Ben to question it? He was here now and had clearly proven himself more than capable as all of the royal guards were hand picked by the Captain Commander himself. To top it off he seemed, thusfar, like good company and it had been an enjoyable day as he went through much of the training.
"Early on you'll be with a partner until you get the hang of it and then it's mostly just one person on each patrol path. There are only eighteen royal guards and obviously not all are on duty all at once so we have to pick and choose what tasks are most important each day. The paths change throughout the day depending on where the members of the royal family are and if Queen Iliana or Princess Ophelia and their children happen to be in town. It's easiest to protect them by staying relatively close and there is always a guard either with them or at least outside the door of whatever room they happen to be in at the time."
Nodding his head, Alden wondered if you were allowed to interact with the other guards that much, but he didn't want to ask that. He figured it would be obvious at some point, and if not then he'd ask. But too many questions at once was rude, even he knew that, he'd had about half the etiquette classes his sister had to go through.
"Plenty of coverage, that's good then." He wasn't sure who would be sneaking around the palace anyways. Attacking Nevermere was just about the stupidest thing you could do. Especially when the king's Witch was a werewolf, and who knew who else. It would honestly be kind of funny, but he was still glad to do his job to prevent it anyways.
Alden listened intensely, making sure to absorb everything Benny was telling him. There was a lot of nuances in the job, but it was still good to know all of them. And he was starting to get into it a little bit. He was going to be one of eighteen elite guards, that was pretty cool. "And we'll go over all those different routes yah? And how do you find out what your routes going to be again?" Maybe he was still asking too many questions.

Ben was more than happy to answer all of his questions. He was a jovial sort of guy who was usually all smiles and good times. Though he was, of course, very dependable as a guard, he was not nearly as stiff and unapproachable as many of them could be. If he could do the same value of work and enjoy it while you were doing it then what was the harm in that?
"Of course, we'll go over them many times until we're sure you've got them down. Luckily, they aren't too complicated," he added with a little wink. "Each week your schedule will be posted and on it lists which routes are yours for the day and when. Sometimes they change of course based on different events so it's wise to check it at the beginning of your shift just in case there have been changes. If something truly unexpected happens then you'll hear about any further updates from superiors as needed."
Alden found he liked Benny D. Not that he'd call him that out loud, but maybe when they were closer. He worked hard on his nicknames, well not entirely true, they usually came quite easy to his mind. It was the thought that counted though, at least that was the saying.
"Right, can that makes sense." Walking along the route, Alden thought this whole job was pretty cool. You got to walk around and protect the palace, which didn't seem to fall under attack that often. Probably didn't have to go throw his life away in whatever war was brewing, and maybe he could travel a little if he did a good enough job.
Smiling at Benny D he had more questions. "Do you get to see other kingdoms? Traveling with the King or such?"

Ben was rather enjoying the day with Alden. Though thusfar they had only talked about the job, he hoped to get to know the man on a more personal level. It certainly made working together easier. Or at least he thought so. They walked along the path so Alden could get a good feel for it as the new recruit asked questions.
Ben smiled and nodded. It was one of his favorite parts about the job actually. "Most of the time to Lorendale," he explained and grinned as he remembered a particularly fun secret rendezvous during a very memorable visit. "Though when you go you're typically on duty for most or all of the time so you don't get to explore much." Unfortunately, but that was the job. "I've also seen Arynn Frey, Coheed, and Cambria, before the latter two were adopted by Nevermere. I was sent to accompany Lady Prowze, the ambassador." Yeah, he had been pretty proud of that one and it had brought him and Norah closer as well.
"The only place I have yet to see is Dresmond," he added with a bit of a dreamy tone. He would love to cross that one off his bucket list...though preferably not in a war-type situation.
Being generally new to being a fully grown soldier, the idea of leaving Nevermere was still high on his list of things to do. He was hopeful that soon enough he'd get to accompany the royalty or advisors away. He wanted to see all of Terra Nova if he could, that would be fantastic. "Wow you've been everywhere. That's amazing."
Honestly he would prefer to avoid Dresmond anyways. He heard the place had been the pits and not worth a visit. The other places though, they would be cool. Especially Cambria or Arynn Frey. He heard the girls were a lot less uptight there. Very cool.
"Favorite place and why then Benny. Is it okay if I call you Benny or do we have to be all proper and such."

Yes, he was pretty proud of the fact that he'd been able to travel so much. It was part of the reason he had continued to be so enthusiastic about his role as a royal guard. Sure, it got a little boring sometimes, but the highlights of the job made the rest so worth it. He chuckled a little at Alden's question. "My sister calls me Benny and I've always hated it. I prefer Ben, but I'll try not to hold it against you if 'Benny' sticks," he lightly teased, giving the man a wink. Of course he had noticed the man's unique and stunning features. He was definitely something he was enjoying looking at but he was keeping those opinions at bay as best he could.
"Lorendale," he answered the first question. "Honestly I've spent more time there than the other kingdoms. It's the most like Nevermere, only it's sunny and the people are..." he let his lips curl up into a sparkling grin, "very, very friendly." Yes, he'd had a good time in Lorendale. It had been snuck in quickly at a party when his absence wouldn't be missed for at least a little while and he'd naughtily taken advantage of that. It had been worth it. It was still one of his favorite memories.
Apparently his nickname abilities were so good he had guessed one already in use. Well that simply wouldn't do, he was just going to have to get more creative, but for now Ben would be fine. Maybe Big D would be the way to go, but he had to workshop it a little bit before putting it out there. "Ben it is, but just keep in mind I didn't tell Phineas or Candace about Benny, no matter what they say." Ooops.
Raising an eyebrow, Alden could read between the lines, especially with a lip curl like that. Clearly that place had to be first on his list. What good was the uniform if it couldn't be used for some good times, especially in bed. "Well I will keep that in mind, not that I'll really have a choice of where I go." Something he didn't like, but that came with working in the military. Follow the orders and it got you places though, like here, being a royal guard.
"Any insider tips on this whole thing then? Best people to shift with, who I should watch out for?"

They continued their shift in good spirits. Ben gave Alden all the best tips he could think of and the two men jovially made each other laugh as well. All in all it was one of the more pleasant shifts that Ben had had in a while and he was glad that Alden was now on the team.
