[For @sebastian]
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
Scout still wasn't sure how they had succeeded at dragging her along, but a few of her girl friends had wanted to go for a drink at the Bronze Lion and they had asked her to please go with them. At first she had been reluctant to go. Whenever she got recognised public, there were three ways in which people approached her. One was with respect, and after a short interaction, people would nod goodbye and be on their way again. The second was when they stroke up a long conversation about all kinds of things: their concerns, how they felt about the state of the kingdom, how they were grateful for what she did, etc. And the third way was when people would try to pick a fight with her because they weren't satisfied with her work. Of course, there were also people who didn't acknowledge her presence, but more often than not, they would at least come over to greet her. It seemed like they thought it was necessary to say hello whenever they saw her. Luckily there people that came to the Bronze Lion were often more than simply commoners. She didn't have anything against commoners, per se, but they sure made up about 75 percent of the people who interacted with her in the second or third way.
"See? I told you it would be nice", Gwyneth said once their first round of drinks had arrived at the table. Scout smiled politely, even though she didn't want to judge in favour of the night that quickly. She took a sip of her drink, something way too sweet for her taste, but the women had her to order the same thing as they did.
All of them were nicely dressed, but Scout was still wearing pants and a blouse, like she always did.
"You really ought to dress more womanly, Scout", Annita said.
"Yeah, I don't understand how you managed to get married. Annita and I are always looking our best, and we're still single", Phillis added.
Scout shrugged with a fake little smile and took another sip of the drink.
"Excuse me, I'm going to go to the bathroom", the Lady Steward said.
She got up from the table and made her way over to the bathroom. She sighed deeply and cursed herself for not having stayed home with Astor. But now she was here, so she might as well have a few drinks and try to have a good night.
After she had finished her business in the bathroom, she made her way over to the bar, hoping the three ladies didn't see her. She flagged down the bartender.
"A beer, please."
She really needed something that wasn't that sweet right about now.
