The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Kat had been working with the witches Hadrian had assigned her and she was starting to make some progress. The portals were progressing and she was starting to get excited for the dumb lessons. Even though some of the instructors were quite boring, there was some lights at the end of the tunnel. Either way it seemed it had been time for a check-in or whatever as the great Hadrian Usher had decided they were going to have a meeting. She wasn't sure if it was about her officer or ranger status, or none of the above, but she put on her uniform and made her way to his office.
Nodding her head to whatever assistant or guard was there to announce or let her in, Kat would wait and then make her way into the office and salute Commander Usher. And then she waited to be spoken to. It's what you did as a woman in Nevermere, especially when you were with a superior, and Captain Commander was just about as high-up as you could get.

Hadrian hadn’t forgotten about Katerina Winters — was it still Winters? — but neither had he found the time to meet with her since first instating her in the ranger program. The thing that had once been his pride and joy had nearly been turned into a permanent disaster by Regan Lassiter—regardless of how cozy she was with the king nowadays. It was his hope that someone like Katerina could save it. Even though he hadn’t been personally involved, he had kept tabs on her progress, which was significant if the reports were to be believed.
Satisfied that Katerina had proven she was ready to be tested in the field, Hadrian called her to his office. When she arrived, he dipped his head in acknowledgment before inviting her to sit.
Seeing as Kat had no clue what to expect in the Ranger program she didn’t find it odd at the lack of communication. It was on par for the military anyways to only know a limited amount of information. So walking into the meeting blind she took the seat offered, taking it as a good sign. The man was a gruff mystery though, so she really had no idea.
Progressing well. Ranger then, good, she was glad to talk about that, maybe it would get her some answers. ”Yes sir, Xenolia said I’m a natural with them and I will start finding new aspects of them soon.” She’d also said she was too stubborn for her own good and would end up killing herself on accident with the portals, but that wasn’t something she was going to bring up. Leave the bad stuff to the instructors if they wanted to.

Van Zant was an interesting creature. Hadrian had become somewhat disenchanted with the idea of upstart commoners trying to make a name for themselves by shouldering forward above the pack. After the Regan debacle, he’d grimly decided that perhaps they lacked the discipline and sense of duty that noble soldiers had. He hoped Katerina would be the test case to disprove his hypothesis.
“Good,” Hadrian said with finality, “My hope is that you’ll be ready for the field sooner rather than later. We haven’t much time to dawdle, particularly with the skills you have at your disposal. What do you think, Van Zant?” He tilted his head, allowing himself to smirk a little, “How soon can you be ready?”
Kat wasn’t the kind of gal that needed constant praise from others, so the short and to the point attitude was just fine with her. Commander Usher seemed like a fine boss, but stuffy and old fashioned though, especially the whole making his daughter quit what she loved. That was Valeria’s problem though, and seeing as she wasn’t much use pregnant Kat hadn’t seen her since the ball. Maybe she was fine being a birthing cow like her father wanted, but clearly she was meant for greater things, sooner than expected possibly.
There had been a time that Kat might have said something like, ”anytime you want to watch all my kids” or ”whose gonna raise the Van Zants?” But she had learned that a smart mouth was sometimes a silent one. Or at least one that didn’t always smack the hand that fed it. ”I think that whenever and wherever you need me sir, I’ll be there.” As long as it wasn’t anywhere near Regan, because that was just about the only thing she’d cringe at.

Hadrian considered her for a moment longer, for the last time weighing the woman in front of him. Yes, Katerina was new to the ranger program, but she’d proven herself a worthy soldier. A loyal one. At some point, one had to take a leap of faith.
Eventually, Hadrian reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a report that he’d slide across the desk toward her. “No doubt you’ve heard some version of this report’s contents,” Hadrian said with a hint of irritation toward the absent Abott and Woodwick in his voice, “But here it is in full: everything the Dresmondi man had to offer about his kingdom and the Eldouir’s dominion. Now…” Hadrian sighed, “Event at the ball among…other reports have given us reason to question whether we can take the Dresmondi at his word. So, I need you to do a little… fact-checking.”
Surely it would be clear what he was asking generally, but he’d pause to let her look over what he’d put in front of her.
Kat looked at the report and noted the irritation, filing all of it away for another day. The report was written by Woodwick, something she hadn't known when word had spread around about these documents. Of course, things had changed by word of mouth, getting more extreme then what was contained in the pages. Kat would be sure to check if there was actually some red-head chick that could fuck with energy.
Another time though as it seemed she was going to be able to hold onto it to... As Hadrian put it, fact-check. Considering the Dresmondi had been friends with Stormcrest he couldn't be that reputable, but she kept the thought to herself. So she was going to need to go to Dresmond, and that didn't really sound like a fun trip, but it sounded like a chance.
"Right. Happen to have any maps or drawings of the place then? And I know it's a lot to ask but maybe reminding the king about the whole prize I won at that shi-- at the ball?"

Hadrian decided right there and then he liked her. When Kat swore, he grinned, as if he were the roguish sailor thirty years younger.
“Rough maps, yes, though I hope you’ll be able to help us fill in the gaps. I do want to stress, this is not meant to be an extended stay. No need to form relationships with the locals or find a place to bed down. Think of yourself as a ferret: popping up through the hole to look around then diving back underground before they realize you’re there.” He leaned back in his seat.
“As for the prize, I will make it a top priority. Have you given thought as to what you’d find useful?”
Kat was going to have to hope that breakthroughs in the portal came sooner then later if there were no maps or pictures of the place. That's how she got there, picture it and go. And while she was working on changing that, this was going to be interesting if she couldn't move past that picture block. "In and out, got it." That was preferable honestly.
But as for the prize she had put a lot of thought into it. "Something to make it easier to pop in and out. Invisibility, something to help me blend in when I'm out of Nevermere." It was really in their own interest to make sure she could do her job well like this. And she just had to trust these guys would push for it.

Hadrian nodded, scratching his beard in thought. It would be quite useful, indeed. Invisibility potions had their place, but also their limits. Something that would help her blend in would indeed be valuable.
“I’ll see to it myself that it’s taken care of quickly.” And he would. The king had made a promise, and Hadrian would see it fulfilled. "What else do you need in the way of training? Supplies?"
Hadrian wasn't Santa Claus, but he wasn't above handing out gifts.
Kat had no faith in the king. The guy was more worried with his other play toys to worry about his home kingdom of Nevermere. So she at least now had some sliver of hope she might get this prize that was promised with Lord Usher on the job. He was old fashioned but he clearly wanted her to do her job well.
"Some healing potions and one or two other tricks up my sleeve would be good, back-ups in case things don't go to plan. If you have it then it won't happen." Maybe that was just street-rat tales, but Kat had never been attacked while she had a knife, and had been twice not being armed. Now she always was armed. "And in terms of training, another week and I should be ready." Hopefully that would be enough time. And hopefully she could find childcare.

Hadrian nodded once, smiling and pleased.
“Whatever you can make use of, you shall have it.” For potions were easy enough. “Contact me when you’re ready so that I know you are ready to begin. After that, I’ll need you to check in with me and provide regular reports. And, perhaps goes without saying,” Though he thought the same could be said for Warren and Aldirch so he’d say it anyway, “That knowledge is for me alone. I’ll share it with the appropriate parties. No one—no one—should know what you’re up to.”
Kat nodded her head, with all of his commands. She was actually quite excited for this ranger stuff, it would give her free range that other parts of the military didn’t. She had her directives but she would be doing it her way rather than however those above her decided. Maybe she could even make some little side trips, it’s not like anyone would have to know. ”I’ll need a week dedicated to the start, popping in and out, mapping the place, it’ll take time.” And then she’d be able to come and go easier and whenever Lord Commander Usher might need.

Hadrian nodded once in acknowledgment.
“Take all the time you need. I’d rather you be careful than quick.” Hadrian was optimistic about the young witch’s chances, but there was no way of knowing what metal someone was made of until it was tested.
“Unless you have anything else, officer…” Hadrian stood, signaling the meeting had come to a close.
