[ONESHOT | flashback, Ver 821: Scout is 22 and still a soldier]
She grinned widely as she looked down at Noah, who was still asleep. When Noah lazily opened an eye, she shrieked and covered her face with the blanket. "Scout, you've got to stop scaring me like that." Scout grinned menacingly, albeit in jokingly fashion. "Sorry", she said with a chuckle before sticking her tongue out at her friend.
The two young women got ready and headed to the training courtyard. They had another training session today, and Scout sure was ready for it. She knew her grandmother and uncle were very proud of her being a Kane soldier, and she had every intention of becoming the best one there was. However, sparring with training swords did get boring after a while, so she hoped something eventful would happen today. But even if nothing eventful happened, there would still be dinner at the messhall in the evening. Something about all soldiers sitting together and bitching about superiors felt so comforting. It really helped create a group dynamic, and helped friendships develop and bloom. She had recently became better friends with @astor, a kind, young man who was a little younger than she was, and who she had known since the was maybe six years old. Noah would joke about her and Astor becoming a thing, to which Scout always responded with an exaggerated roll of her eyes and a stomp in Noah's side.
After some sparring and running circles around the courtyard, Noah and Scout sat down on the ground and eagerly drank from their flasks. Water tasted like the most expensive drink in the world when you were thirsty after working out. The blonde noticed Baldovino Paccoretti walked past, and nodded at him before he disappeared to wherever he was off to. Another man she had recently met, but she hadn't gotten as close to him as to Astor. Still, he seemed like a nice guy.
In contrary to most soldiers, Scout didn't feel the need to complain about the military a lot. She'd go home to Tybalt Zane and tell him all about her trainings, and sometimes they even trained together if he had the time. She really enjoyed being a soldier. Little did she know that only a year later, a wound would prevent her from continuing her career in the military. When you saw her on the courtyard, you'd never think she would end up working a political job for the crown. But life was unpredictable, and so was the boyish woman that joked around with Noah all the time. Noah Walton, who would die during the battle against Coheed, the same battle Scout would get injured during. For now, none of that even seemed like a possibility to the two friends. All they knew was how to enjoy life to the best of their abilities and make their families and superior's proud.
But at night, when she was alone in her bed and the other soldiers in the barracks were quiet, she had to admit that Noah's jokes about Astor were something she thought about a lot.
