The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

[For @nithya]
Ares hadn't been at the castle for a couple of months. He had been busy with family life, training with his sister, and the illness of his father. However, things had changed. When his father, Idris, realized that his illness would not be getting better he had decided that his son was ready to take up his position as courtier. The role of courtier for the family was now fully on his shoulders, or would be once his uncle made it official, and Ares was thrilled with the new rise in rank he had in his hands. No longer was he to be his father's shadow. Now it would be Ares who made all the choices and shouldered the responsibility. To say he was ready was an understatement.
He strode into the palace oozing with confidence. His tall physique, stunning bone structure, and icy blue eyes made him a striking figure and people's gaze were drawn to him as he walked down the hall. He loved it all. He offered handsome, charming smiles to the ladies, especially those who he knew were unwed, and gave polite nods to the men he passed as a few greeted him and made comments on having missed seeing him around.
He got pulled into one such discussion with a nobleman around his age who he had known for many years but it was quickly clear to anyone paying attention that Ares was growing bored with the conversation. He found himself looking around the space for somehow who could be a good out from this annoying chatter.
Nithya was casually strolling through the palace when she caught a glimpse of some elder men talking to a much younger man. She vaguely recognised Ares Bashar . She hadn't seen him a lot, but she knew he was Idris' son, and had recently started to accompany his father on his courtier-walks. He was quite handsome, Nithya caught herself thinking, and if she managed to catch his gaze, she would smile at him before starting to make her way towards him.
She was good at reading people, but even if she hadn't been good at it, she would have noticed from a mile away that Ares was looking for an escape from the conversation.
The woman arrived and joined the group. She nodded politely at the men before casually placing her fingertips on Ares' arm. "Excuse me, gentlemen. I need to borrow Lord Bashar for a moment." The men would murmur in agreement and turn to talk to each other, while Nithya walked away from the group, giving Ares the chance to escape.
If be followed, she would turn around the corner and stand still, waiting for him to catch up. "My apologies if I misread the situation, but you seemed to have grown tired of your conversation partners, so I thought I'd help you get away." She smiled politely, again. "You haven't been around lately, I hope your father is doing okay?" She had heard that his old man had gotten ill, and she wondered if he was on the better hand now.

Ares did, in fact, catch the woman's gaze as she looked his way and started to walk over to their group. He feigned politeness as he returned his attention back to the men he was speaking with but was very aware of every step she made as she moved over to him. Her fingertips against his arm had him looking down at her hand before following his gaze up her arm until he was looking into the brilliant eyes. Truly, if one was going for nothing more than looks, there would be no better match for Ares than Nithya Chaudhari. Yes, he knew who she was as he made a point to remember as many people as possible, especially those who he deemed to be potentially important for one reason or another. And yes, they would make some gorgeous babies between them.
He nodded to the men and gave his apologetic goodbyes as he followed Nith down the hall and around the corner before she stopped. He smiled at her as she explained her purpose for dragging him away. Observant woman. "Well, I certainly appreciate the rescue. Chaudhari, right?" he asked. "My apologies that I can't quite remember your first name." Lie.
"Unfortunately he's not doing well at all, chances for his recovery seem lower and lower each passing day," he said with a somber expression and sad exhale. Also a lie. He truly wasn't all that sad for his father's passing. Not that he was a bad father but that his death would only improve his own standing.
He had a beautiful smile, and it mesmerised her. She wasn't actively looking for someone to marry, but her parents would certainly like a man such as Ares Bashar. The Bashar were a very noble family, but they were very critical of who they married their children to. They seemed to prefer families that lived near their estate, and she couldn't blame them.
"Yes, Chaudhari. Nithya Chaudhari." She smiled softly. It was a bit humbling to not be remembered by her first name, but she didn't pay it a lot of mind. There were a lot of people in the palace.
"I'm so sorry to hear", she said. Family was important to her, and she couldn't imagine her father getting sick. "Hopefully the Goddess blesses your family, or a new healer finds out what's wrong. If I can do anything for you, please let me know."

Ares was skilled at playing the part of a grieving son and he looked sad but hopeful at her words. "All the witches in the family had been doing all they can to appeal to the Goddess. I find myself doing anything I can as well but-" he gave a sad little shrug. "I don't know that they truly care to help a man...a beast." He had been turned a number of times in training with his sister and was as familiar with his wolf side as a man could be given that he wasn't really himself when he was a monster.
"Can you think of anything I might do to appeal to them?" he asked.
She was a bit surprised to hear that the witches of his family were trying to appeal to the Goddess. She didn't know they were that religious. She knew little of their family. The Bashar and the Chaudhari were both secretive families.
"It's not the Goddess, but Sarilla that cursed the men", she explained kindly. "So I don't think she wouldn't be open to helping your uncle. That being said, it might be more difficult if he isn't religious himself."
She thought for a moment. "If you want, I'd be willing to do a little ritual and prayer with you and your sister, for your father", she then offered.

Ares didn't really believe in the idea of goddesses who could manipulate the lives of mortals either for the good or the bad. He had simply never seen anything that proved they were real and to him it all seemed like an imaginative farce that helped people feel purposeful in their lives. Whatever helped them sleep at night. So he was not fearful that whatever Nithya could do would actually work. He didn't want his father to recover and he was sure her rituals wouldn't do any good beyond perhaps offering some kind of hope to the old man.
"That's very kind and generous," he told her, placing a tender hand over his heart. "I don't want to be a burden on you though..."
She waved his concerns away. "You're not a burden, lord Bashar. It would be my pleasure." She smiled. "I don't want to keep you, if you have matters to attend to, though. We could meet soon for the ritual?"

It was the perfect out for this situation. He certainly wouldn't mind seeing the beautiful woman again but he wasn't eager to jump on planning the ritual any time soon either. He'd leave it up to her to plan it. "That sounds lovely, thank you," he replied with a nod. "And thank you again for saving me back there," he added with a wink before he offered her a small bow and took his leave.
