The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Arynnite armor: The armor have two states: active and inactive. When inactive, they look like little more than ornate metal bracers, easily ignored. When triggered, the armor covers Tybalt and serves as an exoskeleton. It will protect its wearer from physical damage and is practically indestructible.
The armor has a certain "preprogrammed" purpose which is to protect its host. To do so, it reacts to heightened emotional states such as fear and anger, at which point the armor will trigger regardless of whether or not Tybalt wants it to or even if he's immediately aware of the threat. It has some degree of awareness and sentience although very basic and one which struggles to differentiate between enemies and friends. Whilst not actually in possession of a will, the armor can guide or direct its host in a specific action, much like a reflex.
The armor needs to be "fed" as Tybalt has discovered meaning that he must hold and absorb through touch certain metals such as steel, copper, iron and tin, a process which takes a few minutes. Without which, the armor will begin to weaken and become less effective until no longer able to manifest.
Perhaps its greatest weakness is that if being consistently bashed or beaten, it would begin to repair itself by using parts of the armor from elsewhere. For instance, if the wearer is being consistently hit in the chest, the armor will begin to pool away from other parts of their body such as the feet and hands, leaving them vulnerable.

This was always going to happen.
Statistically, there had to be someone out there who could sense magic. Tybalt was astonished that it hadn't come up as a problem sooner. In some ways, he supposed, he was fortunate that it was a gifted, and not some enchantment being used by the guards, or a spell from the witches. Doubly so because there had been so much chaos that day that he'd been able to slip away without any questions being raised, or so he had hoped.
Tybalt had smiled at the queen's announcement. Called it wise, and expressed an eagerness to work alongside the new gifteds advisor. Inside, he'd felt some part of his confidence crumble.
The prospect had kept him up at night. It wasn't just him. It was Felicity, and Tobey, and Trinity, and Thaddius. The entire Zane family were tainted by this strange, and powerful affliction. One which had started with him in the terrible north. He justified his actions as being in their interest, not his own. Perhaps he might have spoken with his wife about it, shared his worries. If it weren't for the fact that they weren't speaking all that much at the moment. He didn't want to trouble her with anything else right now.
Eventually, he'd made his decision. He couldn't wait to be exposed. He wouldn't risk it.
It wasn't quite midday yet, when Florina Bellerose would have a knock at the door to her new office. If she called out for whoever was on the outside to come in, she would find herself faced with the commander. The man would be as pleasant, and relaxed as he usually was. In sort, there shouldn't have been much cause for concern.
Magic Detection: The ability to detect magic. The magic may originate from a living thing or from an object, it does not matter. There is no restriction to the kind of magic that the user can detect. The weakness is the spatial awareness limitation, and while the user can detect the presence of magic, they cannot detect the specific kind of magic being used.

Florina had been hard at work all morning, sorting through this, or looking over that. There were still plenty of things for her to do, but she was ready for a break.
She’d just leaned back in her chair, attempting to stretch her back a little when there was a knock on the door. Quickly, she sat properly in the chair, and brushed her hand over her hair to smooth any wisps, “Come in!” She called out, raising her eyes to the door.
The identity of her visitor surprised her, but she tried not to show it on her face. She thought the man might have been Commander Tybolt Zane, but not only had they never been introduced, she’d only seen the man a time or two. There was a very strange magic coming from him, but she couldn’t quite place what it was. It didn’t feel like any gift that she’d felt before.
“Commander Zane?” She asked more as confirmation of his identity than it was a question. She was fairly sure it was him. She allowed a small smile, “It is very good to meet you. May I inquire about the reason for your visitation?”

There were two things that Florina could potentially sense about Tybalt.
The first was his bracers. Enchanted objects, centuries old, forged in Arynn Frey, and given to him as a symbol of friendship by king Cassian himself. Mysterious though they might have been - even to their user - they were common knowledge. What concerned Tybalt far more, was the Coheedsman blood which was pumping through his system. He didn't know if she could sense it, or what she would do with the knowledge if she could.
For the time being though, he played it calm, and cool. "A pleasure to meet you as well. I don't think that we've ever been formally introduced." The last time they'd been in the same room, he had been a bit distracted by their Eldouir friend... "Quite my fault, things have been hectic around the palace of late. As I'm sure you're aware."
The commander allowed his eyes to wander around the room, taking a few quick and quiet notes.
She wanted to know why he was here. Normal, understandable. "Firstly, I wanted to congratulate you on your new appointment." He would wear a gentle smile. "Secondly, I was speaking with Miss Ikisina Navarro recently. I understand that she will be helping you. I wanted to offer you my full support, and any assistance that you might need with your new task. In truth, I was also hoping that you might be able to provide me with some help as well. You see, I happen to have a few questions to ask you."

Florina felt the magic pooling around the bracers as well of the magic in his blood. Both had a foreign sort of feel to them, one feeling more earthy than the other. Strange.
She, too thought of the very event that had caused her change of status in the palace. There was likely a lot of damage control, and not to mention the Eldouir captive and Ori’s arrest, “Oh yes, I understand that things have been quite busy these past few weeks. Hardly anybody has had time to spare.
She saw him eye the office. She’d been eying it quite a bit herself. There had not yet been enough time to personalize or organize it in a way that she could find things easily, although she’d managed to keep the place tidy. It was very different than running her late husband’s vineyard. The only people she’d had to meet with were merchants or representatives of nobles that wished to purchase from her, but here she was, meeting with the commander of the royal legion.
Smiling at his congratulations, she nodded her head, “Thank you, Commander. I will be sure to seek you out when your expertise is needed. I am still learning what my duties are and what is expected of me, I am sure your support will be a valuable asset to me. I hope that I will be of help to you as well, should you need it.”
It seemed the man had some questions for her, and Florina smoothed her hands over her skirts before prompting him, “I will be happy to answer any questions you have.”

The one advantage about having lost so much sleep over the matter was that Tybalt had had enough time to come up with a strategy, a way forwards. One which he hoped wouldn't arouse too much suspicion, as he clung to the hope that somehow he might be able to escape this with his secret still intact, or at least under wraps.
"Well, my business is security, and the military." That much should have been obvious from his title. Although admittedly, he had relinquished a fair amount of the former when he had given up his mantle as captain of the Royal Guard. "One thing I would like to do is encourage more gifted to join the Royal Legion. Voluntarily, of course." He added that last part hastily in order to reassure her. "I don't want to start conscription, or pressganging. In the current climate, I believe - although you're almost certainly better placed than I to speak on the matter - that it would be beneficial for the image of many of the gifted to be seen to be willingly lending their strength to the nation. Not that there aren't already many doing so... Besides, given that we will likely be finding ourselves at odds again with the Eldouir soon, we could do with all of the help that we can get."
There were the rough outlines of his reasoning. Those of a military man, certainly, but hopefully one which would serve to get across his intentions, and well-meaning. "I would like to work with you on this. Perhaps if I approached a few of those on the registry in person, we might be able to convince them. What are your thoughts on the matter? Please, don't be afraid to tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree"

Florina listened to the commander, unsure of what to make of what he was saying. Having more of the gifted in the Royal Legion would surely be quite the boone—especially when going against those of the Eldouir’s caliber, but to give him access to the records…
“I do agree that having more of the gifted in the legion would be quite the thing we need. With ones such as the Eldouir as our enemy, we will surely need such talent. However…” she clasped her hands together in her lap, hidden behind her desk, “I do believe the registry is meant to be private, so I will not be able to give you those records at this time,” a pause, “but I would like to help you. Perhaps we can do some advertising?”

When Florina mentioned the private nature of the registry, Tybalt shook his head. "Apologies, I forgot." It was true, he had an awful lot on his plate right now.
"Yes. As I said, I don't want this to come across as an attempt at pressganging." The commander contemplated the matter for a brief while. "Perhaps you might be able to extend such a campaign to other areas as well, such as agriculture." He only said agriculture because he thought of Remiel, but there had to be others out there who could also help with such tasks. "It isn't my domain at all, but perhaps it might allow people to see the gifted as more than the monsters they're made out to be." The man folded his arms across his chest. "I would be more than happy to assist you with the campaign. Including security. Sadly, these days we might well need it."
Tybalt would give her a chance to respond, before continuing. "I also wished to ask you about your own gift. If you don't mind, that is."

“I do like the idea of encouraging the gifted to use their gifts to help the community in a more open way,” it would be very good, especially with all the trouble the Eldouirs had caused recently. They really gave the gifted some bad press, “I would be glad of your help commander. I will need to do a little brainstorming and think of some areas where certain kinds of gifts would do the most good.”
Then he asked her about her gift, and Florina briefly wondered if that was the true purpose of his visit. Everyone including the queen herself was curious and had questions for her, “I’d be happy to answer your questions, Commander.”

The commander was sincere with his eagerness to help Florina. As far as he was concerned, they had all been sitting around, letting the situation deteriorate for too long. If people like Felicity were to be proven wrong, then the palace was going to have to get organized and start setting an example. If they could just get the ball rolling, then maybe the rest of the kingdom would follow.
Now it was time to tread carefully. Tybalt had planned this out as carefully as possible. He didn't want to risk clueing her into the true purpose of his visit. So he picked his words, masked his self-interest behind that of the crown. "It regards Palace security. As I'm sure you're aware, Hiram Eldouir can teleport. Would your gift allow you to sense him in particular, for example, or do you just see magic as the same entity."

Hiram’s name caused the hair on the back of her neck to raise. She recognized that name, how could she not? He and that family of his had been the cause of much discord in the kingdom and was arguably the biggest reason for the mistrust the gifted received.
“I could,” she said, thinking back to the other sorts of magic she felt, “Every magic has a particular…” she searched for the word in her head, having never spoken to anybody before about her gift much beyond that she had it, “…feeling?” she tilted her head to the side as she thought, “but I’ve not felt his magic before, so I would feel it, but unless I’ve felt what his magic feels like, I would not know it was him.”

"Ah." Tybalt allowed the word to hang there as he thought things through. It wasn't exactly a breakthrough for him. It would have been nice to be able to have some sort of an early warning system when it came to a possible Eldouir attack. "And how far exactly can you see others?" He assumed that there had to be some sort of limitations to her gift, presumably she couldn't see the entirety of the nation's population, and those abroad.
He would frown, pondering matters in silence. The commander was still treading on eggshells. "What about other nations? Would you be able to sense an enchanted item, dyr or Coheedsman?" There, he'd said it. He prayed that it wasn't too much of a clue, or enough to raise more suspicion.

He seemed disappointed, and Florina frankly couldn’t blame him, “If it helps, if I can get a hold of something that his magic has touched, I may be able to find faint traces of his magic that is left, and I would know what his magic feels like. As for the distance, I believe I can sense others from a mile out, although I’ve never had the opportunity to test the exact range,” but even as she spoke, she felt the tingles of magic, faint and distant.
“Other nations?” She asked before she listened to the rest of his question. It was not unlike the conversation she’d had with the queen of late, but there was something slightly off about his questioning, “If it is magic, Commander, I should be able to detect it. I’ve not knowingly come across any magic that I could not feel. For example,” she looked at the bracers that he was wearing (if they were visible. If they aren’t, her eyes would land where he was wearing them), “I know you are wearing something magical, and…” she hesitated, wondering how indelicate it would be to point out that wild feeling magic in his blood…oh. He would probably see the realization hit her face since she made no attempt to hide it. She would lower her voice so that it would not be hard beyond the door, “Are…are you gifted, commander? Although, I confess you don’t feel like any gifted I have come across.”

The commander raised an eyebrow at her statement, before offering a reassuring smile. "Well perhaps we can find a way for you to practice a little now that you're part of the palace?" Even now, Tybalt was very fond of drills, and training.
His gaze would follow hers to come and rest upon his bracers. "These?" Tybalt raised his wrists to make them more visible. "A gift from King Cassian. They come from Arynn Frey." They were ancient, and there weren't many if any others about. They'd saved his life on more than one occasion, and that was all that Tybalt actually knew about the enchantment.
"I'm not gifted. At least, I don't think I am." Gifts were curious things. Tybalt had been made aware of a few cases where adults, who had lived "normal" lives up until a certain point had suddenly developed them. He didn't think he was one of those exceptional cases. He might have, had it not been for Felicity. The fact that she was suffering from a similar affliction to him, made the commander certain that it was something else. How that something else had come to be, he couldn't say exactly, but he was confident in saying that it wasn't Lorendale's magic.
Better they come to an understanding here and now rather than she go and bring her complaints, and concerns to the monarch. Of course, there was no guarantee that once they were finished here, she wouldn't just run and do that anyhow. Tybalt was however determined that at the very least, if trouble did come from this, then he could legitimately say that he'd spoken openly about the matter with another. Still, the man found himself to be hesitating. For the first time in a decade, he would run the risk of sharing his secret with a stranger. "What I am about to tell you stays between us, at least for the moment."
He would wait for her assurances before taking the risk of continuing. Although admittedly, it might already have been too late for that.
