The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Upon leaving the throne room, Ophelia would go immediately to her chamber with the two witches in tow. She’d insist on them staying in her room to guard her as she changed, a trembling maid also assisting the queen. Her face was stony, eyes vacant but teeth gritted in resolve. Ophelia could feel a well of grief rising like a lump in her throat, one that she for now she was determined to swallow to fill the hole in her where Akagi’s soul had once been. What saved her was Julius’s grip on the back of her neck, his invisible presence guiding her actions like a puppeteer.
Onward.
Ophelia would change her dress, the maid wiping the blood from her queen’s body the best she could. Faint stains still remained on her neck and chest, but for now, it would have to do. Ophelia’s dress was a navy so dark it was nearly black—nearly. Nevermerean blue was still subtly woven into the threads, like armor.
Onward.
She went to the royal study, this time asking the witches to stay outside. As Ophelia shut the door, she started to feel dizzy. The well of grief sprung up, threatening to drown her. Nauseous, she stumbled toward the desk, gripping the edge with white knuckles. White, save for the red stains that she now saw on her fingers.
Ophelia bent over and wretched into a wastebasket that contained stray papers that bore her husband’s script. All that came up was a mouthful of bile that she spat into it.
Onward.
Pulling out her handkerchief, she wiped her mouth and steadied herself. The door to the study opened and she turned with red-rimmed eyes to whoever opened it.

A Peacekeeper entered the room in Nevermere, and Cordelia's heart immediately sank. Maybe it was her intuition, but she felt like they couldn't come and fetch them so soon after the Eldouir had arrived. She walked towards the man and placed a hand on his arm. The look on his face told her everything she needed to know, yet she listened to him as he spoke.
"Her Majesty has requested for you and Lady Delaney to return to Arynn Frey at once, with princess Lorelle. The King-" he paused, glancing at the children and then back at Cordelia. "The King is dead."
The older woman brought a hand to her mouth, covering the sound of the gasp she let out. Tears formed in her eyes, and she stared at the Peacekeeper without making a sound. She stood like that for a minute, before removing her hand. "Are they gone?" she asked with a trembling voice. "I am not sure, ma'am", he said truthfully. "They have left to fetch Elena Eldouir."
Cordelia looked behind her, at Valeria Delaney and the children. Ophelia had asked them to return, but Cordelia couldn't obey that order. Not until she had seen Akagi and Ophelia for herself. Not until she had made sure that the Eldouir wouldn't return. She walked over to her and leaned in close to whisper in her ear. "Stay here", she told Valeria. "Don't tell the kids anything yet. Tell them... Anything, except the truth."
She wouldn't wait for a response. Cordelia would ask the Peacekeeper to stay with Valeria and the children, all of them, including Lorelle, and used her portal key to open the door to the family rooms in Arynn Frey.
Once she had stepped through the door, she was approached by Peacekeepers that led her to Ophelia's room. She opened the door, and saw the young woman looking at her with eyes that told the story of a thousand tears.
"My love", she said, walking towards her with quick steps and seeking to embrace the woman. If she accepted, she would stroke her hair and pull her close. "I am so, so sorry", she said, tears welling up in her own eyes. She would pull back and look at Ophelia. "I didn't bring Valeria and the children yet. They are not safe here as long as the Eldouir are in Arynn Frey."

As soon as Cordelia, Valeria, and the children were brought to Nevermere, into the palace where Sylas was residing temporarily as he crafted enchanted shields for Nevermere, he was immediately informed of their arrival and why. He had made immediate action at that point, but not to see the new Arynnite visitors. No, instead he hurried to make his way home right away. Using the necklace that would portal him to it's other half, he appeared in his bedroom in Arynn Frey. Kezia was not there. She had left the necklace behind when she left, something he was still burying behind a turmoil of emotion that he had not let anyone see.
The walls shook and trembled, plaster and stone falling in pieces from the ceiling. By the time he made it to the throne room he was far too late. The Eldouir were gone, Ophelia was gone, only Akagi's body as the peacekeepers worked to move him. The looked up at Sylas as he approached them, hesitant in their actions now that Akagi's brother was there. Sylas said noting to them, only gave a brief not to assure them to continue. He stared down at the lifeless body of his brother, his king with no expression. Sylas had always been good at hiding how he was really feeling behind a blank mask. Inside there was turmoil, fury, and anguish. Inside, something dark was cracking.
The peacekeepers took away the body as Sylas stood motionless for a long time. Finally it seemed he'd come back to himself. He blinked and inhaled a deep breath. His gloved fingers stretched out at his sides and he turned on his heel. There was no time to wallow in grief. There was only one person he cared to see right now, Ophelia. It didn't take long to find her and he stepped into the room shortly after Cordelia had, seeing the two women embracing as he entered. He stepped inside but kept his distance from joining in their sorrow.
He had never been good with words, he was a man of action, and he had always struggled to be sensitive or thoughtful. He waited for a only a moment to give them time to embrace before he spoke. "Lorelle is too young to rule," he said, the statement obvious. "I will act as Regent until she comes of age." After all, if Akagi did not have a child, then the lineage of rule would naturally fall to him and he certainly couldn't allow Ophelia to do so. Unlike her daughter, she had no Arynnite blood and Sylas was not going to simply hand over his kingdom to Nevermere. He had nothing against the woman. He rather liked seeing how happy she had made Akagi but this was not about feelings and sentiment. This was about order.

Ophelia’s expression remained unchanged as she embraced Cordelia. She hugged her tightly for a moment before pulling back, looking up at the woman with sorrowful eyes but with her mouth in a firm line.
“Lorelle is to be brought to Arynn Frey,” Ophelia said with firmness, but kindness, “It is not a request, Cordelia.” She squeezed the woman’s arm with affection. Nodding to one of the witches. “Assist the peacekeepers outside. Lady Usher and Lorelle are to come at once. That’s an order.” The witch would set off to do her bidding. Ophelia was still queen, one who had goodwill among her people. It was unlikely that the peacekeeper and the witch would disobey the order when given once more.
It was then that she turned to Sylas. Admittedly, Ophelia had hardly noticed him. Akagi’s brother had always existed on the fringes, and though there was no ill will there was certainly no closeness between them. But she had always understood Sylas and Akagi’s relationship to be one of mutual respect and affection. And so with that, the prince’s next words surprised her.
“Your brother’s body is not yet cold,” Ophelia said, tone level but eyes wide, "Can you give no moment for his loss?"

Cordelia had hoped that Ophelia would be less stubborn, but she found new people for her unfulfilled order. Cordelia didn't try to stop the witch or the Peacekeeper. The woman took a step back and folded her hands in front of skirt. She had noticed Sylas come in, but she hadn't expected his words.
"His body is indeed not cold yet", she said softly. "So give Lorelle and the children some more time to stay in the unknown. It's too soon to crown Lorelle, Ophelia. Not because she's too young, but because it's too soon. Let there be a funeral first, and let the Eldouir leave before you bring her here."
She hoped Ophelia would listen, and that the witch and Peacekeeper hadn't left yet. She stepped closer to Sylas and squeezed his arm softly, urging him to take it easy.

Kimora was a mother. She wanted to grieve.
She'd been fortunate enough to be away from the madness which had taken her son from her. It had been a matter of waiting out the storm, sheltered from it, and anxiously waiting until they were given the all-clear. Kimora had been planning vengeance, and cursing the red heads when she'd been given the news.
The announcement had been made solemnly, and the former queen had been left to herself with only her husband for company. It was everything that she had feared. Another child lost. Now, only Sylas remained... Kimora would cry. For all the pretenses, and barriers she might raise around herself, she remained a parent. She didn't think of Akagi as the king. Well, in part she did, and of how proud he had made them. To her though, it was the little boy that she thought of. The one that she had brought into this world, and watched grow.
The image of her smiling, joyful eldest child would remain plastered behind her eyes for a long time.
Now, though new whisperings where reaching her ears. Ophelia had appointed herself queen, or at least that was how one version of the tale that reached her went. The rest of the family was gathering.
Kimora would dry her eyes, regain her composure, and make her way towards what remained of the Llewellyn clan. She demanded as exact a recounting of just what was going on, as was possible, just so as to have a picture of the state of affairs. Her little boy was dead... It all seemed to come back to that simple, but inescapable fact.
When she reached them, her expression would be solemn, but dignified. For a few moments, she chased away her own pain, and made herself of chiseled stone. When she entered the room, her gaze would travel around those gathered together. "There is to be no more talk of succession, or regents, until Akagi has been laid to rest." Her words were firm, as final as they could be for someone in her position.

Sylas dropped his gaze down to the floor. Kezia had been the one to encourage sensitivity in him and since her departure he found it harder and harder to find that skill in himself again. Perhaps he'd only had it because he was feeding off of her own powers of empathy. He was grieving, of course he was, but he could separate his duties from his personal sorrows into separate parts of himself. He would grieve on his own time. He didn't like to share that with others but he forgot that not everyone shared that preference.
As he aunt reached for him to squeeze his arm he had to fight the urge to try to avoid her touch, allowing her to do so but it provided the opposite of comfort. Only Kezia had ever been able to touch him without him feeling like his skin was crawling. He had to admit though that it was a sense of relief when his mother entered, a familiar sense of control that did provide him with comfort.
"My apologies," Sylas stated, looking up from the floor and to Ophelia. He moved towards her though did not reach out to try to physically comfort her. "I know how hard it is to lose the one you love," he said, looking into her soft eyes. He'd lost Kezia twice after all, though no one knew about the second, and though he thought she was dead the first time it had not been true in the end. "I did not intend to overstep. You and Akagi were the happiest I've ever seen another couple. I am so sorry you have to go through this," he said to her.

Ophelia’s eyes did not leave Sylas, even as his mother entered as a new figure in the mourning party now forming. It was only after the prince’s gaze fell that Ophelia let her attention drift to Kimora Llewellyn . Her relationship with her mother-in-law had never been overly warm—Arynnites or Nevermereans did not tend toward such things, after all, particularly royals. But there had always been respect between them, and on Ophelia’s part, admiration. And they had both loved Akagi. And they’d both lost him. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at the once queen. They swam with love, with sympathy, with all the raw emotion of the moment lay bare on the Nevermean’s face. She responded to Sylas, though her eyes remained on Kimora.
“We have all lost A—Akagi,” His name almost would not come, “—and so we will go through this together,” Ophelia said, though the words seemed more for Kimora than for the one who’d spoken. After a thoughtful pause, Ophelia let out a shuddering breath, shoulders falling a little as she did.
“Your point is well made, Aunt. The children will stay in Nevermere for now.” This wasn’t a battle Ophelia was going to fight, and certainly not at the expense of alienating Cordelia Olivarius —someone she hoped would remain an ally. For the first time, Ophelia addressed Sylas Llewellyn directly.
“The safety of those in this room is my primary concern. The king had already arranged for witches to aid the training of peacekeepers, and no doubt Commander Hadrian Usher will offer more if asked. I will speak to him. At the same time…” Ophelia looked about the room, “The Eldouirs a sin of Lorendale that has twice visited Arynn Frey. We should not hasten to shed Arynnite blood for Lorendale’s sake. They must mend what has been broken; until then, we protect our own.” She looked to Cordelia Olivarius . She was the acting king’s hand, so she would continue to look to her for guidance. “Augustus Rainecourt was once ambassador to Arynn Frey. Once the palace is secure, we must make contact with him. The queen is within the Eldouirs' grasp, but perhaps the prince is still within reach.” She looked to Sylas Llewellyn …to address the elephant he’d led into the room.
“There will be time to discuss the future. But at present, there is only time for action. I will be my husband’s voice, so long as—as I can still hear it.” Ophelia swallowed as her voice quivered with grief.

It was a bittersweet victory. At least the children would be in the unknown, and safe, just a little longer. She nodded respectfully, thankful that Ophelia had decided to leave them in Nevermere for now.
"The Eldouir are their responsibility. It's time Iliana takes matter into her own hands and aids the fight against Lorendale's own creation. We cannot continue to suffer. Like you say, we must not she'd Arynnite blood for Lorendale's sake." It sounded motivational, but they were hollow words.
As for the rest, she agreed with Ophelia. It was not time to think about a new heir yet. Sylas had tried to talk about it way too soon.
"How did it happen?" she then asked, carefully and hesitantly, refering to Akagi's death.
Post by Kimora Llewellyn on Jun 16, 2024 1:41:43 GMT -5
Her grandchildren were safe. That allowed Kimora's heart to rest just a little bit easier. At least some part of Akagi would live on through them... The thought again was enough to quieten the queen for a few moments, as she did all that she could to maintain her regal demeanor, and avoid cracking. It would have been easier to break down.
No doubt that was why she didn't snap back a reply to Ophelia's statements. She made it sound as if Arynn Frey were helpless, and were mere children when it came to defending themselves. That, and the only non-Arynnite in the room seemed to have taken it upon herself to take charge. What might have been seen as an admirable trait by some, to the former queen, was a threat, and one which couldn't be allowed to stand.
Now, however, was not the time to be discussing such things. They would be for another day. In private... "Why were the Eldouir even here?" It should be pointed out, that at this point, Kimora knew nothing of what had been done to Elena. She simply knew that Lorendale's problem children had turned up, and that the results for Arynn Frey, and the Llewellyns had been catastrophic. Again.

Like his mother, Sylas did not much appreciate Ophelia’s words. Any of them. Though particularly the last. The Llewellyn family had lost their position as true rulers once before to the council and Kimora had taken it back. He certainly wasn’t about to step aside and let Nevermere do the same. Without Akagi, Ophelia was even less of of one of them as ever before.
He glanced at his mother from the corner of his eye but he too remained silent for now as the questions were asked around the room. He hadn’t been privy to the information either. Unfortunately only Ophelia was likely to have any answers at this point.

Ophelia nodded in grave agreement at Cordelia’s words. Yes, the Elduoir were Lorendale’s responsibility. Lorendale had failed and would be held to account. She would answer both Cordelia and Kimora’s questions as one, for both were similar in effect—the why and how, intertwined.
“They came to demand the return of Elena Eldouir. When I heard—I tried to make it in time, but I wasn’t. Quick enough. They murdered him.” Ophelia swallowed, shaking her head. “I don’t understand. Why would he let them in the palace? Why greet them alone, without guard, if he knew they were coming?” She looked at Cordelia.
"You were with him before you came to fetch me. What is it he said?"
Post by Cordelia Olivarius on Jun 28, 2024 12:58:16 GMT -5
Cordelia swallowed at Ophelia's words. It was up to her now to tell them what had happened, but would she speak the truth, or only part of it?
She put her hands in front of her and sighed shortly, closing her eyes for a moment. "We were discussing Elena." And now a lie or a truth would follow. And she chose the lie. "He- he had suggested doing some experiments on Elena, since we had her in our care. We had talked about asking Lorendale to experiment with Gifted, and he thought Elena was a good starting point. See if we could extract her power, that sort of thing. Eventually, he asked me to harvest Elena's soul, so he could make an enchantment with it to protect Arynn Frey. We were admiring the diamond which holds her soul when Captain Commander Usher used his portal key to tell us the Eldouir were on their way to fetch Elena." She looked at Ophelia. "He had hoped to make an enchantment with her soul before they arrived. I don't know why he went to meet them alone. I don't know what he told them, but I suspect he told them that he had taken her soul." She swallowed. "He had said since it was his idea, be would take responsibility for it."
The pure disgust she felt for herself and her lies settled in, but due to the circumstances, her teary eyes could easily be contributed to Akagi's death. Cordelia had been a close advisor for many years, and not once had she lied. People would have no reason to think she just did.

Kimora listened to the explanations that were presented to her. The former queen's heart grew heavy.
Silently, she cursed her eldest son. What a foolish thing to do. He should have known that the Eldouir were not to be trifled with. They were brutal, heartless, and unpredictable. Human life, even that of a king meant little to nothing to them. She could have criticized all of it: from the plan to try and exploit the Eldouirs, to his mind boggling decision to go to greet them by his lonesome. His mother could have shouted at him. Called him a fool. She wanted to pluck that crown off of his brow, and find any other head to put in on if it meant that he wouldn't go out to meet them.
If only he were here...
The former queen let out a somewhat shaky sigh. She tried to push such painful thoughts from her mind, and focus on the here and now, not things that she could no longer help. So she focused on duty: "I trust that measures are being taken to ensure that they cannot come back."

It wasn't a terrible idea, Sylas had to admit. He himself had been doing research on the gifteds in Lorendale for some time though he'd taken a break from that particular realm of study as of late. What wasn't the smartest was to do that kind of experimentation on an Eldouir, knowing their history of brutal violence. But there was nothing to be done for it now. What was done was done and all they could do was move forward.
He said nothing more, once more listening for the answer to his mother's question.
