The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Ophelia’s expression was one of calm compassion, betraying nothing of the thoughts that swarmed in her head. Experiments on gifted, at Akagi’s suggestion. It made her blood run cold. It was not so much the thing itself that disturbed her, but that it had all happened under her nose—hidden from her by her husband. Ophelia did not think they had such a marriage. She’d always appreciated his transparency in their partnership…or what she assumed was transparency. But a decision this consequential, made without notice or consideration? One that put their children in danger, with the potential of the Eldouir’s wrath? She felt she’d be sick all over again.
“Then I suppose they got what they came for,” Ophelia said hollowly before turning to Kimora, “Akagi had already begun to train more peacekeepers under the advisement of witches from Nevermere. Those efforts will be redoubled. Until then, I will petition the commander for more witches until Arynn Frey’s own army can withstand the threat of the Eldouir. As for the palace…” Ophelia looked to Sylas.
“The palace should be made a fortress. You have worked with my brother to secure Skia…I hope I can be as useful a partner to you in providing for Elyusian’s security.” Partnership. Ophelia was trying to thread a very difficult needle. Sylas had tipped his hand in attempting to name himself regent. Ophelia understood the dynamics at play and what she stood to lose.

The former queen had a great many questions. With Akagi dead, many were unlikely to ever find a real answer. The thought stirred Kimora's emotions, trawling through all of her pain once more. She tried not to linger on it. They could address such matters at a later date, for the time being, what mattered most was dealing with the current situation. They needed safety, and stability. For that, they would have to find a way to deal with the Eldouir. The former queen had been about to speak when Ophelia beat her to the punch.
Kimora was not in the mood for politics. Not after losing her son. Not so soon at least, but she saw Ophelia for what she was doing, and felt that she could see which way things would way if nothing was done...
"Unless Akagi scrapped the project-" And Kimora hadn't heard that she had. "The Peacekeepers should be armed with enchantments which will allow them to face a gifted threat. We will call them to the capital, and the palace." Her gaze would come to rest upon Ophelia sternly. "There haven't been foreign troops in Arynn Frey for centuries. Not in any meaningful number. A handful of witches might be acceptable if they were acting as your bodyguards, but anything else will be seen as a sign of weakness as much by our own people, as by our neighbors." Since when did Arynnites need help from any neighboring kingdoms? Kimora had to wonder just what her beloved son had been playing at.

There was a reason why for so long Sylas had focused his energy on enchantments on not in diving deeper into the politics game. He was a man who liked control. He could control what he was doing but when other people were brought into the mix it was always messy. Now, however, it was time to change.
He did appreciate Ophelia's moves to work together, it was something and for now that was all they needed. It was too soon for much else. Hearts to heavy and emotions to high to successfully work at anything more conflicting. He gave her a nod and attempted a gentle smile but even smiling was unnatural for him and he wasn't sure how it would come across. "I'll begin work on something right away." The wall had been a good idea but it had taken too long to complete. Perhaps it was time to use an enchantment that would close their borders to unexpected visitors. The sooner the better.
He looked to his mother as she spoke and nodded thoughtfully in agreement. Terra Nova seemed to underestimate Arynn Frey and what they were capable of. Maybe it was time to prove them all wrong and show them why they had remained free from foreign attack in so long.

“The project is underway,” Ophelia said, though mentally making a note to assess just what meant. It wasn’t entirely clear to her just how far her husband had progressed, “But until we can be confident they are well-equipped, we cannot afford to gamble. It is not just the palace that needs security, the cities too. We cannot leave them vulnerable to better fortify ourselves.” Ophelia was gentle, pleading even, as she spoke to Kimora.
“Akagi has already allowed witches into Nevermere to train your peacekeepers,” Which was true. There were far more than just a few witch guards in Arynn Frey per the king’s request, “Providing more support to them would hasten the time when Arynnite troops could be sufficiently equipped to defend the kingdom and support would no longer be necessary.” Ophelia’s eyes were wide as she implored her mother-in-law.
“It is no weakness to depend on one’s allies. Nevermere has accepted your aid in fortifying Skia,” She indicated to Sylas, “Allow my brother to return the favor. I would much rather risk being seen as weak in the pursuit of strength than made a fool holding to pride alone.”
Ophelia hoped it would not come to her citing the failure of the wall in addition to the recent breach. To say that Arynn Frey was capable of defending itself at present without aid was, in her mind, out of touch with the present circumstances. There was too much they stood to lose. The Eldouir had already taken over one kingdom…who was to say they would not seek another with far greater appeal?

As Ophelia spoke, Kimora would cast a brief glance over to her remaining son. If she could catch his attention, and his alone, then perhaps he would be able to see some of her discontentment, and read some of what his mother was thinking. It was only a second's careless display that she allowed herself.
"I suppose in a time such as this, it is unity that we need..." Kimora spoke solemnly, as she looked out over the kingdom she had been born into, and still felt some form of duty to protect. "We will reinforce our own security, in both defensive, and offensive means." The former queen spoke the words as if they were orders. Orders she expected to be respected, regardless of the fact that she had abdicated from the throne some time ago. "If your brother, king Cassian, is willing to lend some of his witches to assist us in securing the kingdom until we have had the opportunity to reinforce our own, and train the Peacekeepers to deal specifically with the Eldouir threat, we will gratefully accept it."
The last few words that she spoke were only half-true. Had she had less self-control, then no doubt Kimora would have muttered them through teeth clenched tightly with bitter reluctance. As it was, she managed to get them out without too much showing. The Arynnites were a proud people. If their former queen was certain of one thing, is that this was the last time they would be pushed around.
"A lot has happened today..." She declared. "I think we all need time to process things properly, and to rest. We must say goodbye to Akagi..." Her heart squeezed slightly at the thought. "Then, we will answer this."

Sylas met his mother's eye and though his expression remained unchanged he did straighten his shoulders slightly. He was not overly thrilled with this situation either but if there was one thing that was true of Arynnites it was that time was not as rushed here as it was in other Kingdoms. When you lived so long there was little use for rushing decisions. Still, time would matter here. They must act before the threat was at their door once more.
He gave a brief nod as his mother finished speaking but said no more himself. Things needed to be done in order, and first was saying goodbye.

Ophelia dipped her head toward Kimora in agreement, her thoughts drifting to Akagi. She fleetingly wondered if Akagi might still be alive had Kimora remained on the throne, and if it wouldn’t have been better for everyone if Kimora had kept the crown. As Kimora said 'goodbye,' a few stray tears slid down Ophelia’s cheeks, which she calmly brushed away. Outsider though she may be to the Llewelyn family, she loved Akagi. He held a piece of her soul, and she, his. Now, that piece was gone, ripped from her heart. She would never be the same.
"I will begin making arrangements," Ophelia said, brushing away another tear, "If you'll excuse me..." After one lingering look at Sylas Llewellyn , Ophelia dipped her head and made to exit. As she passed Kimora Llewellyn , she'd lay a hand on the royal's arm in a brief gesture of affection before she left the room.
