The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

The Hiems chill was setting in. Even though Florina much preferred vers, there was something about heims that she found particularly appealing. Perhaps it was how quiet the world became when it became snowy, or perhaps it was how cozy she felt under warm blankets or by a roaring fire. Whatever the reason, there was usually a sense of peace this time of year. Something that she desperately needed of late, given how hectic everything had become. Hopefully, tempers would cool with the weather.
The day was moving well into the evening, and Florina was in a carriage, wrapped in soft, furry blankets, heading toward the music hall. There was a symphony playing that evening, and she was happy that she was able to attend. Since she’d been given her new position at court, she’d had very little time to herself in recent days as she familiarized herself with her new duties.
She arrived at the music hall well before it was time to enter her box. She would let the coat check take her cloak, revealing her gown. She’d find her way toward the hearth in the waiting area. She’d given her maid, Sophie, another chance and sent the girl to fetch her a drink while she waited to be ushered into the boxes. She’d scan the room for anybody she knew, but saw nobody…or did she? There was someone in the crowd that looked familiar to her, but she could not place exactly where she’d seen her.

With the chill of Hiems settling upon the land, Embry couldn’t help but feel a touch melancholy. There were far less active ways to keep oneself busy during the colder season, and it made her ache for sunshine and walks through the gardens. But she wouldn’t complain, not when today she was getting to enjoy a symphony at one of her favorite places in Lorendale: the music hall.
No other place could bring her spirit such joy and ease as the lovely place. The Montgomeries had their own box, so she wasn’t concerned about her arrival time, though typically she preferred to arrive early so she could simply bask in the ambiance. That, and her mother was still determined to see to it that Embry was seen in society. The woman still held out hope for her daughter securing a match, despite her already being twenty-nine.
She didn’t mind so much being encouraged to go out, not when it was to the music hall. Embry even let herself be dressed up for the occasion, donning a lovely soft blue dress that complimented her dark hair. She offered soft smiles and dipped her head accordingly as she meandered through the crowd, brown eyes falling on a familiar face and she took pause. It was Countess Florina Bellerose, a lovely woman her older brother Otto’s had taken an interest in helping find a puppy. Though, Embry couldn’t help but wonder if he was interested for more… personal, reasons.
She couldn’t help but find herself making her way over, offering a charming smile as she approached. “Countess Bellerose, fancy seeing you here. Are you a fan of music as well?” Embry had no issues striking up conversations, especially not when she wanted to get to know someone better.

The familiar figure approached. Oh, they had met before then! Florina was not normally terrible with names, and the prospect of needing to talk to someone while trying to figure out what their name was was such a social nightmare. But then she saw the woman smile, and it reminded her of someone else. Someone that she’d recently taken a fancy to. The shape of the smiles were so much alike, she could only conclude one thing. This lady was Count October Montgomery’s sister. She remembered seeing her at the puppy sale, but had not the opportunity to speak with her.
“Countess Montgomery,” Florina inclined her head as a greeting, “It is very good seeing you here. I do believe the last time we met was your family’s puppy sale,” Florina was very much enjoying watching Melody grow and get up to puppy antics, “I trust you have been well?”
“You are also a lover of music?” She smiled, happy to meet another music lover, “I do love it. I come here as often as I am able.”

Embry was not known for being particularly shy if she had taken an interest in getting to know someone, even more so if she thought her brother might be interested in them. Not to mention; running into the Countess at the music hall of all places! There was seldom a place she felt so eager to enjoy herself than here. “Oh please, do call me Embry. Countess Montgomery is so very formal.” She offered a smile as she smoothed a hand over her skirt as she same to a stop near the other woman.
Florina truly was lovely, not just in appearances, but also in how she spoke. “Yes, oh I’m so pleased you remember, I know I wasn’t helping you as directly as October was. But I was so very pleased you found a puppy, how is she doing?” Of course, trust Embry to ask about the puppy. She couldn’t help but be curious, she did love knowing the puppies were settling in well with their new families. Her smile softened as she nodded. “Very well indeed, and yourself?”
Embry couldn’t contain her excitement in her eyes as she looked around the music hall with nothing but utter delight sparkling in her brown eyes. “I very much am,” She couldn’t help the soft rosy tone that took to her cheeks as she spoke. “Few things in this life spark such joy in my soul as music.”

Embry was a refreshingly cheerful soul, Florina decided, “Then you must call me Florina, Embry,” she was not usually one to drop formalities so quickly, but her cheer was contagious, and Florina could not find it in herself to insist on formalities. Besides, she was aquatinted with her brother. What was the harm?
“I am doing very well, thank you,” Florina found her voice taking on a light and cheerful quality that it had been sorely lacking of late, “And the puppy is doing very well. She is quite the addition to the family! She’s always curious about what everybody is doing. She is truly a joy. As I told your brother, I cannot fathom how you could bear to part with such adorable creatures.” A pause, more of a hesitation really, then, “Speaking of your brother, how is he doing?”
“Oh, I very much agree,” Florina could not help but share in Embry’s excitement. She did love music, “I find that no matter how dark my mood becomes, music has a way of lifting my spirits. Pray tell, do you play any instruments, Embry?”

It was often a bit lost on Embry that she was expected to stick to certain social formalities and expectations, she truly had never been the best at following such rules. Much to her parents’ chagrin. Thankfully, Florina seemed not to mind her more forward and friendly demeanor. Her mind was near immediately made up that she should like to befriend Florina. “Oh, I would so enjoy that. Your name is so lovely, Florina.”
Embry couldn’t help the wide smile as Florina expressed how she was doing, and then spoke of the puppy. She gave a soft sigh of contentment with a gentle shrug. “I do believe it helps that we refrain from naming them, it is always so much more difficult once they have been named. But I am so pleased to hear she is settling in well!” Of course, growing up in this business is had been easier to accept that the dogs and pups would come and go. That didn’t mean she never found herself attached though. It was why she didn’t have any interest in training the dogs, as she knew she would easily grow attached. Thankfully, her father didn’t expect her to go into the dog training, though he did appreciate her help with the bookkeeping.
The question on her brother made her brow raise slightly, but Embry merely smiled softly. “He is well, though he has been rather busy as of late.” She said lightly, an expression of sadness threatening to overtake her, but she was in much too happy of a place to allow her mood to be dampened. Regardless of missing her brother when he was away, she had faith he would return. Besides, he really ought to be considering settling down. She would like to have another sister.
“Yes, exactly! And even when there is a bitter note or sadness to a tune; it is still so lovely I cannot help but find myself smiling.” Embry’s expression softened to an almost dreamy look as she gave a delicate nod. “I do, I play the harp. Stringed instruments are my personal favorite to play. Do you play any instruments, Florina?”

“Oh! I had heard of such methods,” Florina said thoughtfully. She’d heard it more in how a farmer might treat his livestock that was to be raised for meat. It was difficult to be attached to something that one had not assigned a name to. She was happy to know that it was the case for companion or working animals, too, “I am happy that she is, too. She is a very good girl.” Florina reminded Melody of this frequently and enthusiastically.
She noted Embry’s raised eyebrow. Florina wondered what the other woman might be thinking about her inquiring after her brother. Was it a sense of sibling protectiveness, or surprise that she had asked? Perhaps she was reading too far into it. The world had really done something to her way of thinking and she wasn’t sure how much she liked it, “I can imagine that he is,” she said lightly, “Loren seems to always be in some state of chaos of late. Everybody is on edge or is pretending that everything is as it was before,” she had been of the latter sort before her assignment to be the gifted advisor. She often wished she could go right back to those days of being able to stay beneath the bushes and out of site of the populace.
The subject of music greatly lightened the mood, “I do love the harp,” Florina smiled, “I play it myself, along with the piano and the lyre. Perhaps we should play together soon.”

Embry listened intently to Florina's thoughtful musings. She was glad the other woman understood the practicality behind not naming animals meant for work or companionship until they were properly settled, though not quite as pleased as she was to hear that Melody was adapting well. It wasn’t always a concern, as the Montgomery’s were typically very good at placing the puppies or dogs with compatible owners.
Florina's inquiry about October had caught Embry slightly off guard, but more so because she was curious to know if the pair were strictly friends, or if there was the potential for more. Of course as the younger sister she could help but be curious. She nodded as Florina spoke of the pervasive chaos and tension in Loren. Embry could relate to the sense of longing for simpler times and admired Florina’s resilience in her new, demanding role as the gifted advisor.
When the conversation shifted to music, Embry's eyes brightened. "Florina, your musical talents are indeed impressive," She remarked warmly. "The harp, piano, and lyre—all instruments of profound beauty. I would be delighted to play together with you. Music has a way of soothing the soul and bringing people together, especially in turbulent times like these."
Embry envisioned an intimate gathering, a musical soirée where they could share their love for the arts. Okay, so maybe she had a rather vivid imagination and mind for whimsy. "Let us arrange a time soon to indulge in this shared passion, please!"

Florina could not help but laugh in delight. When had she been able to converse about music with someone who shared her passion so thoroughly? She thought back to the previous vers when she and Baroness Severin had had that mix up in this very theatre, but she’d not seen the woman in quite some time, “I really must agree with you,” she said, “I do not know how anybody can survive difficult times without music, and I do believe it is something that we will all need in the coming days,” they certainly were living in some frightening times, what with the Eldouir insisting on staying in town and all.
Little did Embry know, but Florina was picturing much of the same thing. She’d been ever so wanting to have a little gathering where like minded ladies—and perhaps gentlemen—could share in their love of music and other beautiful things, “I would very much enjoy that, Embry,” oh she would carve out the time for it. She knew she could, “Perhaps we can arrange something for next week, or the week after if that is better for you.”

Embry’s eyes sparkled with genuine pleasure at Florina’s laughter. It was a rare joy to find someone who shared her deep appreciation for music. She nodded in agreement, recalling the encouragement she had received, especially from her sister when she was younger and feeling a sense of nostalgia.
"You are absolutely right, Florina," Embry replied, her voice soft yet earnest. "In these unsettling times, music is more than just a comfort; it's a necessity. We all need something to lift our spirits and remind us of the beauty in the world."
The idea of a gathering to celebrate their shared love for music filled Embry with excitement. "I would be delighted to help organize such an event. Next week sounds perfect. We can invite those who find solace and joy in music, creating a sanctuary amidst the chaos."
Embry glanced around the music hall, feeling the anticipation of the evening's performance. "Let's make this gathering a reality, Florina. It will be a wonderful way to connect and support each other through the power of music."

“Excellent!” Florina put her hands together in front of her chest, “I am very happy that we are in agreement,” it had been too long since there had been a gathering—especially one filled with such beauty! Had the last party she’d hosted really been that tea party that she and Ori hosted together? Hopefully this event would be filled with more cheer than that one had been. “Allow me to see if my aunt would allow us to use her music room,” she was much closer than Florina’s estate.
“You are delightful,” she smiled, “I must invite you to sit with me in my box, Embry,” it would be very good to listen with someone else who appreciated the arts in the same way she herself did.
