The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

A few weeks ago, Scout had the pleasure of meeting October's (who she had known for a while now, since they saw each other in the palace often) sister Embry at the family's puppy sale. They had gotten along well, and Embry had seemed to love the puppies Scout had chosen a lot herself. Initially, she had lost her heart to one of the pups, but eventually she had decided to take them both. They were settling in well at home and seemed to get along with her cat Peach as well, although Myer tended to be too hyper around him, and Peach didn't like that. Ivor was calmer, which he preferred.
Scout and Embry had kept in contact, and the Advisor of Law had invited the young woman for tea so they could talk and play with the dogs. It would also he nice to take them for a walk. Scout would see what felt right at the moment. After all, she didn't know Embry well, but she had really liked how welcome Embry had made her feel.
Her house was located closer to the city than most estates, but far enough to give her a bit of privacy and peace and quiet. It was a big estate, and it felt very lived in, but truthfully, to Scout it felt empty. She wanted to fill the rooms with children, but for now it was just her, the pets and the servants. Outside was a stable as well, for her horses. The Kanes were good horse breeders and trainers. She took pride in her horses.
The young blonde was seated in the salon. Peach was sleeping on the sofa next to her, Myer was there as well, resting his head on Peach, and Ivor was walking around the room. When Embry arrived and knocked, a servant would welcome her and bring her to the salon.

The first time Embry met Scout, the Marchioness was visiting her family’a estate during a dog sale. Of course, trust Embry’s friendly nature to encourage her in not simply aiding the woman in finding herself a pup, but also a new potential friend. And not only did Scout indeed purchase a pup, but she took siblings! Never had she been so thrilled to have seen two pups go to their new home as she had been that day. Even if their exchange had been relatively business related; Embry had felt a sort of kindred spirit in the Marchioness, allowing her own excitement to even bring her to embrace the woman. She couldn’t help it.
And oddly enough, the pair had kept in contact. Ensuring that Ivor and Myer were settling in well. Of course, receiving an invitation to take tea with the Advisor of Law was something Embry wouldn’t dare refuse, not that she would have wanted to. She was quite excited to be seeing Scout again, and of course the pups too. Oh, and hopefully the cat she had mentioned having as well.
Embry’s dark hair was pulled back and kept relatively simple, her focus much less on how stylish she appeared and rather how easily she could interact with the animals without having to fuss over herself. Her father of course insisted she take a carriage, not wanting her to look too worn from a ride. So, she relented and tried to enjoy the ride.
The Marchioness’ estate was closer to the city than that of the Montgomery’s. Embry gave a polite smile to the footman as he helped her out of the carriage and she smoothed the front of her dress as she knocked. She wasn’t kept waiting but a moment, and was shown the way to the salon where her presence was announced before she was shown in. Embry gave a polite curtsy as she entered, dipping her head and offering a smile. “Thank-you for the invitation, I was so looking forward to speaking with you again, My Lady.”

Scout notices that Embry must have arrived, because Ivor faced the archway that led to the corridor. His hearing had picked up on the door opening and some voices sounding in the entryway. She sat a little more upright and smiled when the servant and Lady Montgomery entered the room. The blonde got up and curtsied at her new friend. "You're very welcome, thank you for coming. And please, Scout is fine, if you're comfortable with that." She was big on manners and proper behaviour, but she was also friendly quickly with people she liked, and then felt like a first name basis was fine.
Ivor walked over to the woman and watched his tail excitedly. He looked back at Scout, whining softly because he wanted to jump up in excitement, but knew that he had been taught not to. She chuckled and shook her head so Ivor just pressed his nose against Embry's leg. Myer had gotten up by now as well and had joined his brother in greeting the woman he recognised because he had been bred by the family. Peach, on the other hand, was still fast asleep, stretching a bit while dreaming. "I hope the ride here was comfortable. Please, make yourself at home! Would you like something to drink?"

Embry smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling at the corners as she regarded Scout's friendly greeting. "Thank you, Scout," She replied, her voice carrying a gentle lilt. "It's lovely to see you again."
She knelt down slightly to pat Ivor's head, her fingers brushing against his soft fur. "Hello there, Ivor," she said softly, her tone affectionate. Myer received a similar greeting as he approached, and Embry couldn't help but chuckle at Peach's peaceful slumber. The dogs looked to be settling in perfectly in their new home and that pleased her to no end.
"The ride was quite pleasant, thank you," Embry said as she straightened up. "You have such a beautiful home. And I would love a cup of tea, if it's not too much trouble." She took a seat, feeling instantly at ease in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the room. "How have you been?"

Scout had named the dogs in front of Embry, before taking them home, but it was still nice that she had remembered their names. They had gotten used to their names by now and responded well to it when called. Ivor thoroughly enjoyed the oats and wagged his tail, his brother following suit when he received his greeting.
It was good to hear her ride had been pleasant. "Thank you", she said with a smile when Embry complimented her home. "I'm glad to be back here." She had stayed at Birkhall with her uncle for a while after her husband had passed away, because being in the hole they had lived at together had been painful. Now, with all this new life around her, it was pleasant. "And of course, not too much trouble at all!" She gestured at a servant, who then left the room to boil water and prepare a pot of tea for the two women.
Scout gestured at the chairs, inviting Embry to sit if she pleased. "I've been well! Busy, as always, but I quite like that." She sat down again and gave Peach a few strokes along his back. "How have you and your family been? The puppy sale seemed to be quite a succes." She smiled. "No surprises there, of course. Everyone knows the Montgomery's have the best dogs."
The servant would arrive and place the teapot and two cups on the table. After filling them, she would bow slightly and disappear back into the kitchen.

It wasn’t often that she recalled the names given the pups when they were purchased and taken home. But in this case, she was eager to befriend Scout, and it was clear the woman cared for her animals. She couldn’t help but recall the names with a smile. Giving the dogs affection in turn, she was very pleased to see how well they were taking to not just their new home, but their family.
Of course Embry herself couldn’t understand the type of great loss and pain that followed the death of a husband, but she could imagine being in the home one shared with them would be difficult at times. She offered a soft smile as she nodded, looking around the room. “Does your work allow you much time at home?” She found herself asking, suddenly quite curious. The mention of tea was absolutely lovely and Embry took a seat with an easy smile.
“It does ensure the time passes by more swiftly when one stays busy, so I can understand how that is preferable.” Embry’s dark eyes watched with amusement as Scout pet the lovely cat, glad the pups were settling in well enough with the feline. “You are too kind. The sale was quite the success, we are very fortunate to be so highly regarded when it comes to our dog breeding and training.” The praise was very appreciated, though it did make her blush a bit. “And my family is doing very well, though Otto does stay rather busy as of late.” a frown threatened to pull at the corners of her lips, but was fought off in favor of a smile when the servant returned with the tea.
