The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Magic Detection: The ability to detect magic. The user can judge magical aptitude, pinpoint magic being used within a mile vicinity, and even detect when potent magic has formerly been used in a space. The magic may originate from a living thing or from an object, it does not matter. There is no restriction to the kind of magic that the user can detect. The weakness is the spatial awareness limitation, and while the user can detect the presence of magic, they cannot detect the specific kind of magic being used.

For a moment, all Florina could do was blink. Surely, she thought, she had misheard him. But no, she had heard him correctly.
She turned her head at him to see if there was any hint of jest in his expression. Whatever she saw, she would open her mouth to say something sophisticated, something poised, something eloquent…but all that came out was, “I…what?”

Hiram stopped their walk and sought to grab her hand, spinning her to face him if successful. There was a fire in his eyes, though small, and a mischievous grin on his lips.
“Marry me.” It should have been a question but it left him as a command. One charged with humor and excitement and even a pinch of mockery. Once upon a time, Hiram had been engaged to marry—and not another Eldouir. That time was long ago, when everyone was a little less innocent, and the light parts of the world a little brighter.

Before she knew it, he had spun her by the hand. Her wide eyes searched his face, mouth slightly agape as she tried to read his expression.
The question had been posed so clearly that even if she had the presence of mind to feign misunderstanding, it would have been impossible. She thought of the last time she had been proposed to—her late husband. It had been everything a young noblewoman could expect: proper, with just a touch of romance. And yet, it had been more of a formality. Her acceptance had been inevitable, prearranged by her parents.
At least this time, she had a choice.
Or rather, the illusion of one. His question had felt more like a statement. An order.
But what should she say? The frightening thing was that she couldn’t quite bring herself to reject him. Whether out of fear or a deeper, unacknowledged desire to be tied to him was unclear. Perhaps it was both. Or maybe she relished the idea of being pursued by someone like Hiram far too much. And yet, to accept him was also unthinkable.
“Why—” her voice came out thinner than she had intended. She cleared her throat and tried again, aiming for composure. “Why, this is so unexpected,” she swallowed, her voice steadier this time. “So sudden.” She fought the tremor in her hand as she placed it over his, the one still holding hers. “Will you allow me some time to reflect?” Her eyes finally met his.

Hiram’s smile was poised to expand, as if this were all some colossal joke he’d start laughing about as soon as she really fell for it. Maybe that was the case. We won’t know until we know.
When Florina asked for time the smile faded. It was slow and painful, the way a tortoise’s head leaves its shell. In place of the smile was boredom.
“Suit yourself.” His tone was dismissive, and he released her as he said it, unimpressed by her sensibility. “But things are going to change in big ways in the coming days. You should make sure you’re ready.” The blood he’d used to teleport in began sloshing about his feet, as if it were the waves of a sea where a storm was brewing.

She’d made a mistake, but wasn’t sure exactly what it was that she said that was so wrong. She’d been trying to buy herself some time from this impulsive man, but perhaps that had been wrong of her. She saw the boredom in his eyes. It should have been a relief. He would be bored of her and might leave her alone, but a wicked part of her was distraught.
She’d enjoyed his attention.
She opened her mouth to speak, but a gasp left her mouth at the sight of the blood moving around his feet. Controlling blood was powerful, true, but it was also disgusting. She swallowed the bile that rose in her throat, “I…” she cast her eyes to the ground, but immediately looked back up at his face when she saw the writhing blood, “…will I see you again?” it was not what she’d meant to say, not what she’d wanted to address, but it was too late to change her words.

The blood didn’t only writhe. As she spoke, it reared up behind Hiram, a snake, a wave, a storm, coming to devour him. He grinned at her question, but whether the smile was a result of mirth or pleasure was indiscernible.
“Surely.” It was the only word that escaped his mouth before the thick, red liquid sloshed over him, causing him to disappear as if he had become the substance, and in his wake it splashed against the ground, splattering Florina from head to toe and pooling at her feet.

Her eyes widened as a surge of blood rose, almost as if it sought to consume him whole. She barely registered his final words before the crimson torrent swallowed him, and a strangled scream tore from her throat as the blood splattered across her, hot and thick. When the taste of iron filled her mouth, it broke her final reserve—she could no longer hold back the urge to retch.
That was how the servants and guards found her: kneeling in a pool of blood and bile, her body trembling from the shock of it all and the rapidly cooling blood soaking through her clothes. She couldn’t summon the strength to answer any of their questions, barely aware as they lifted her from the ground and led her inside, where a hot bath was quickly prepared.
As she soaked, scrubbing herself raw, Florina regretted ever attending that masquerade. Everything had unraveled since that night—dangerously, irreversibly. She shivered, wondering bleakly what fate awaited her now.
