[ For Phaedra Rainecourt-Marx ]
After meeting with his niece, Augustus retrieved some things from his office and set off for his manor in Loren—his place of residence when spending time at court. Not too long ago, the prince would have enjoyed riding in the crisp winter air; trotting from the palace through the streets of Loren with his guard in tow. But current events had made him more cautious, so he opted for a closed carriage instead.
During the carriage ride through Loren, he gazed out the window, stroking his mustache as his expression cycled like a kaleidoscope. Augustus thought things throw in conversation with himself, and he had the habit of letting that show on his face. He could be the only man in a room, but still, his brow would rumple and his lips twitch in a smile as he cycled through whatever it was that was on his mind.
But today, his solitary discourse would not do. He needed insight that only an outsider could provide.
When they pulled up to the manor, Augustus was looking forward to the peace and quiet of his home. He greeted the doorman with a smile and a clap on the arm. “Ernest,” Augusts said, warm even if the warmth was not deeply felt, “I’ve come in search of my wife.”
“She is within,” Earnest replied, clearly a little hesitant, “Hosting some guests, I know not who.”
Augusts grimaced briefly. Of course she was. Augustus sighed before bidding Ernest goodbye and entering. As soon as the door opened, he was struck by the tinkling of laughter and the sound of music in the parlor beyond. Augusts couldn’t see them and therefore didn’t bother to mask the pursing of his lips and the darkening of his brow. No matter. He handed his gloves and goat to a servant who instructed him on where to find his wife.
By the time he entered the drawing room, Augustus had regained his broad smile and stately composure. There were a dozen or so people present, bowing at curtsying when Augusts entered—though the music continued. Augustus dipped his head in response, but his eyes sought his wife alone.
