The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Zevran barely registered Alys's hand on his arm and would have kept going had it not been for the steel grip of Regan that kept him in place as she, almost literally, snarled in his face. He met her gaze, emboldened by the strength of his anger as he hissed through his teeth, "Get the fuck off of me."
@berengar coming to his defense only bolstered him more, his friend's loyalty and understanding of his plight evident in his own angry words. But @alys , she did not come to his immediate defense. He would have turned his anger on her, had he not heard a sickening crunch and been suddenly tossed to the side by Regan.
The force of her shove knocked him off balance and he hit the ground, sliding across the shiny ballroom floor where he flipped on his back just in time to watch a man transform into a hideous wolf-like creature. Anger replaced by absolute horror, Zevran was frozen on the ground, staring wide-eyed and slack jawed. Rune was at his side, mentally and physically urging him off the floor with head butts. It was her opinion that they definitely needed to get the hell out of here.
Since Red and Raff were close to the exit doors, he said, "Let's go Red, no time to argue!" Raff attempted to scoop up the tiny woman over his shoulder and run for the exit. Should Abbot jump off the stage, see Red from across the crowded room, run across the room and try to walk by Raff to attack Rhedara, Raff would instead, shove the shorter Red behind him and attempt to intercept Abbot aggressively.

When Octavius Wulfbrand shoved his way through the crowd with a growl in his throat, Ber turned angrily to face him, ready to fight Wulfbrand, too. Then the other man started contorting himself with a scream, and the unpaired soldier had no idea what was happening until the massive werewolf stood before him.
In the split second between understanding and chaos, as Regan Lassiter shouted her warning, he would try to stumble back and attempt to protect himself twice over. First, he would instinctively raise one arm to try to block the creature’s blow from hitting anything vital, and if all went well, he also would utilize the only improvised weapon in hand: the mostly full glass of punch, glass included, would be thrown in the werewolf’s face in an attempt to slow it down or make it miss him entirely.
Upon finding himself flying through the air, he would do his best to land in a way that would minimize the damage and injury dealt to him by the inevitable fall and impact.

Rhedara barely registered the sound of cracking bones before @raff threw her over his shoulder which she would not try to fight him on or protest about until she was already over his shoulder, "Wait, what's--?" is all she manages to get out before she spots the werewolf through the crowd.
IF Aldrich Abbott manages to reach them before Raff can throw her over his shoulder, Rhedara will try to turn her face away from the punch at the last minute so his fist hits her cheek or eye instead of her nose. If his punch lands, and assuming that he is far enough away that the incantation will not hit her and possibly her date, she will attempt to retaliate despite the delirium of a hit to the head by trying to chant a wind-based incantation aimed at Abbott's feet.
Warren had attempted to keep an eye on what Regan was doing, but there was no seeing over the crowd, especially once they began to surge first toward whatever was happening, and then quickly away from it. The roar of gasps could hardly be ignored, and the air grew tense with panic. Whether he had heard the cracking noises or not, the suspicions that he had hoped were untrue were in fact confirmed by Othello Allemeade's shouts toward the witches in the crowd. There was a werewolf loose in the ball, and if it wasn't being controlled, that meant that everyone involved would be in danger.
Warren himself had no weapons on him, and he wasn't wearing any armor. If he attempted to get close, he'd be ripped apart. He knew that, and if Regan and The Kings Witch were close by, he thought they must be able to handle it. Anyone else would only get in their way.
So, as he was near one of the exits, he began barking orders at guests to usher them out. "Nearest exit, now!" He shouted at them, pointing them toward the hall by the stage where Othello and Aldrich were or had been. "All of you, out! Clear the room, nearest exit!" His eyes scanned the rowdy crowd and found his niece and nephew, huddled against the corner near where @faylin stood. He pushed his way through the crowd toward them, having to pass a little too close to the fight to do so, and heard the woman call for Kat to stand down. "Evangeline, Theodore, out that exit, now!" He said, keeping his eyes on the wolf as he did his best to make a path for his niece and nephew to exit.
Bex was as quick to respond as many of the other soldiers. As soon as she seemingly noticed what was going on, she hurried towards the problem instead of away from it, though keeping herself at a relatively safe distance. At least not within arms reach of the monster. "Take him down!" Bex directed those around her, particularly the witches. "Use your magic to subdue him!"
It was not her intention to have Octavius come to harm. She wasn't trying to order him killed, only knocked unconscious so that it would force him out of his shift regardless of who was currently controlling him. Which was mostly likely Kat, but she saw that Faylin had already approached her. Good.
After shouting her instructions she cast a curse meant to slow the movement of his muscles so he couldn't get as far and have to basically move in slow motion.

A growl, primal and deep sounded in her throat the moment Regan Lassiter took hold of Zevran. Her eyes flashing darker than usual and she stepped forward, “Release. Him.” Verbal insult or no, it was the grip she had that almost had Alys’ launching out of her skin. Had it not been for the familiar snap of bones that instantly drew her to wheel around and face Octavius Wulfbrand.
Every hair on her body suddenly seemed to stand on end as in the matter of two seconds she realized what was happening. Muscles coiling as her own inner beast pushed its way to the front and demanded to meet this werewolf heads on. Without knowing which witch was controlling him, she wasn’t sure if a command had been given. In the loudness of the hall room, she couldn’t have picked up on those words spoken to turn him. Not when she had been so focused on the confrontation in front of her.
A curse came from her, one aimed directly at Octavius from the close distance that, if successful in hitting its mark, would make his whole body suddenly feel the pull of gravity times twenty what it actually was, pushing his massive body to the ground. Any attempts at moving would be either near impossible or extremely sluggish for the next ten or so minutes.

It was the guard’s movement that clued Hadrian in.
Hadrian hadn’t indulged in the punch beyond the first sip. He was still relatively clear of mind, the jubilation that had captured him before quickly evaporating when faced with unfolding disaster. Hadrian saw the beast emerge from the crowd and start to swipe at the crowd.
One of their own, turning on her comrades. Hadrian’s gaze darkened. To turn a werewolf in the middle of a crowded ballroom was tantamount to attempted murder—if not murder itself.
“Evacuate the king,” Hadrian barked at the nearest guard, who would start to obey his orders and try to see Cassian Rainecourt out of the ballroom. The king was priority number one. Everyone else came second.
Hadrian would bark orders at those nearest to clear the ballroom as he made his way toward the werewolf who had formerly been Octavius Wulfbrand .

It was like a goblet of frozen water was poured down her back. One minute, she was in Octavius Wulfbrand's arms and the next he was yards away and shifting in front of Zevran, @berengar, Regan Lassiter and @alys. For a split hair, she was mad because she was a witch soldier. The next, she realized that, oh shit. He was shifted. In a crowded room.
Elletta grit her teeth and barked at the nearest soldiers to her as she tied her skirt to the side so it wasn't in her way. "Clear the area around them! Evacuate anyone panicking!"
The one glass she'd had was enough to have killed the nerves she would have had otherwise but not enough to override her senses completely.
Off to the side with her brother, Kat was about to throw down her third drink of the night when she swore she heard Octavius. Had he said her name? As her eyes looked around they found the horror starting to unfold in the middle of the ballroom. Her pair, her wolf, her partner was shifting before her very eyes. And immediately she was angry. Someone had the audacity to shift her pair, and in the middle of a crowd? And Faylin was blaming her?
Glaring daggers at the woman she shouted at her twin. "Get your bitch of a partner in line or I'll kill her." If Octavius got hurt because of Faylin deciding not to trust her then she would end up with a knife in her back one of these nights.
But she had no time to focus on her, attempting to stride forward towards her partner and her eyes settling on Regan. She hated the woman, but also knew she didn't want Octavius hurt either. Good. So she stopped after a step, focusing on finding the traitorous witch and attempting a curse instead. "The witch who turned Octavius now, doesn't even deserve to bow, her joints will lock into place, unable to take a single pace."
Kasper is young enough to fall under the werewolf curse, yet it is dormant. Should the curse be activated his wolf form will be that of a white shaggy fur color keeping his smallness even though he is still rather large for a werewolf. His eyes also retain their green color.

After their dismissal and the collection of his reward the trio were heading back into he frey, something was clearly going on and Kasp watched as Octavius beelined straight forward to the source of the growing mess. He was looking for Faylin when everything he was trying to avoid suddenly broke loose and as a paired soldier...one with the active curse the hairs on his arms stood up and stirred the wolf in him. Octavius was changing and his gut dropped, suddenly it was all chaos. People rushing to leave smacking and bouncing off Kasper, "shit, shit shit...Kat can you do your trick and get him the hell out of here?" he was thinking the forest, "or get control back?" Kasper was with Kat the whole time she hadn't uttered that curse, goddess he hated being in the middle but he totally understood Kat's frustration.
He would let the Witches do their work, Kasper would start directing people to escape.

Cassian was still watching. He couldn’t hear what all was transpiring, but he didn’t need to. He very clearly witnessed the center of conflict around the Dresmondi, and the turning of the werewolf that followed.
When a royal guard leaned next to him, urging him to vacate the premises, the king stood but otherwise lifted a hand, commanding them to wait a moment longer. This was a ballroom full of soldiers. The beast—that familiar creature—would have many capable soldiers to get through before it could reach Cassian. And even if it did… the beast in him shuddered at the excitement of the thought of a fight.
It was remarkable how quickly the scene had changed. In seconds, the jubilant ball had been upended into a hellish nightmare. The werewolf formerly known as Octavius Wulfbrand moved quickly. The arm @berengar had lifted to shield himself was hooked by the beast’s swipe. He was tossed, flying through the air above the crowd before smacking against the wall with a sickening thud. Ber would be knocked unconscious. His shoulder was dislocated, ligaments and tendons meant to hold it in place severely torn. If he were awake, he’d find the limb limp and numb. A couple of Ber’s ribs had cracked upon impact, but the soldier was, mercifully, only distantly aware of the pain.
Regan Lassiter was next on the werewolf’s list. The distance she’d tried to put between herself and the werewolf had helped a little, but she was a fool to think she could dodge the blow entirely. Octavius Wulfbrand ’s claws tore across her chest like the points of slicing daggers. An inhuman and entirely wolfish yelp sprang from her as the swipe took her down. She rolled for a short distance across the floor, blood smearing behind her on the floor.
Regan Lassiter came to a stop on her back. The torso of her dress was mostly ripped away. Flaps of skin peeled back across her chest, the white of her collarbone peeking through. Blood started to rise in a sickening ooze as if it were starting to paint a new crimson bodice. Beyond the obvious injury, Regan’s cheek up to her nose had been clipped by the monster as it carried its swing through. While this cut was largely superficial, a slow drip of blood started down her face. She whined a low, animal whine, body stiff and sore and unwilling to move.
The werewolf started to move for Zevran . Regan had tossed the Dresmondi far enough that @faylin ’s curse took effect, starting to impede the creature. @alys ’s started to weigh the creature down as well, and it started to slow. Zevran , still on the floor, would now be forced to contend with people tripping and trampling as they ran for the exit—as per @warren ’s orders. As the crowds started to clear, @warren would be able to clearly see @katerina , @faylin , @alys , and Regan Lassiter .
@katerina had taken aim at the one responsible for her partner’s transformation. The clever curse would gradually root @bex to the spot. Her upper body would remain mobile. Perhaps she’d be able to play it off, continuing to direct others, but for now, she would not be able to move from her spot.
Othello Allemeade would not successfully obtain a sword from the guard, who was already on the move. Nor would he gain the wolf’s attention in the din of the ballroom. But he would feel access to his magic return as Regan set it free.
Elsewhere, Hadrian Usher , @elletta , and Kasper Van Zant all aided in seeing people to safety. Valeria Delaney moved towards her father, who had yet to hear or see her, putting herself closer to the werewolf as the crowd pushed against her. Moving against the pushing crowd, the pregnant woman would fall down in the chaos. Not too far away, Elodie Atwood would remain planted, frozen in fear.
Standing next to her, Zarha Sliva took aim with an ice incantation. But a crowd of people remained between her and the werewolf she took aim at. The ice did not reach its mark. Instead, three soldiers were collateral damage, the small shards of ice zipping past their skin to leave a smattering of tiny cuts. It was a decision, no doubt, made in panic. Panic was only building as people pushed for the exits.
Some were successful in making their escape, including @warren ’s niece and nephew, and @raff with Rhedara Shannon slung over his shoulder. With the entire ballroom between him and his attacker, Aldrich Abbott wouldn’t be able to reach Rhedara Shannon before she disappeared through the exit. Aldrich would find himself in a clearing portion of the ballroom, standing just beneath the king, Cassian Rainecourt , who would see the entire scene from his high place by the throne.

He saw what had happened to Regan and his friend Berengar, but he felt that connection to his Gift open just prior to Regan getting slashed like a meat sock. Othe didn't flinch a muscle other than the grind of his teeth as he would forcefully pull any steel sword from every guard in the room, only just before sticking this summons with every single one of them like a pin cushion he noticed the witches weren't using their true destructive magic. They could have been blasting this fool but instead they were slowing it down?
So he floated the swords to him, above the crowd to avoid accidental impaling, it didn't stop him from sending two at the wolf looking beast: one would seek to slice the heels of the wolf and the other was sent to sever a hand. The rest of his sword arrows would remain floating above their master. He wasn't aiming to kill, just to hinder it's advancements.

Zarha seeing that the incatation didn't work however she noticed that Valeria Delaney fall down do the chaos of the crowd. She will try and help Valeria up. Looking at the nearest guard. "Get her of the ballroom!" She wasn't in the right frame to help. She hoped that one of them helped Valeria out and that the young witch does that.
Once did this she tries to get to Zevran to help him up. "Rune can you do your smoke thing? We really need it right about now beautiful." She looked towards Octavius. Hoping that that will create a distraction.
