The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

Othello didn't know how to go about receiving an audience with...well anyone...he was utterly on his own with Regan being gone. She and Benji were all he truly had here and Benji couldn't lift a bar of iron much less help Othello in this current predicament. The large oaf had been wondering alone since the big "announcement" a bullshit culling is what he called it, these twats were going to need EVERYONE if the Eldouir were to be who they fought. Strong capable soldiers he got, the best of the best, but they were going to need those buffers the meat bags so to speak to stand between them and capable ones.
No matter, this wasn't his pig to dress and fuck, he was already a clear asset to these people. A weapon. And he was being treated as one by everyone. Othello hadn't just forgot or abandoned his anger from the night before so he paused and asking every passing soldier the same question, "Where can I find the Commander?"

Most soldiers would give Othello the brush off—either because they sincerely did not know where the commander was or was not crazy about being the one to send the intimidating gifted his way. But, before long, Othello would find himself directed to the armory where Hadrian was barking lengthy and detailed orders to a blacksmith trying frantically to note them all.
It would be to Othello to address the commander and attract his attention.

The young man who had pointed the Commander out to Othello quickly hurried away from the Gifted man mumbling, 'i didn't tell you,' this made Othello snort air from his nose thinking to himself, 'of course you don't, no one here takes anything of themselves into account for themselves,' still Othello proceeded to approach the Commander the whole time asking himself the question that kept Othello from being....OTHELLO...
WWRD? what would Regan do?
She'd tell him to be calm. Say less than needed. Don't be Coheed Othello.
"Commander," simple, his voice wasn't raised nor did it have any sinister undertone to it, "May I have a moment of your time?"

Hadrian turned from the blacksmith, prepared to tell whatever soldier it was interrupting to wait in the most emphatic terms. But it wasn’t an ordinary private that stood before him. It was the gifted. Hadrian hadn’t fully appreciated the man’s value before, but after seeing the demonstration at the field…needless to say Othello had Hadrian’s undivided attention.
“Mister Allemeade,” Hadrian said, waving away the blacksmith, “What can I do for you?”

Othello stood at attention before the Commander, he watched as the blacksmith was dismissed taking the momentary pause to survey the Commander. The man had been shouting at him the night before to which Othello hadn't forgotten but if Regan had beat anything into a man like Othello was chain of command (he had a feeling her adamant lessons on the subject came from some deep seeded place of her own failure to obey the chain; he didn't care of course they were partners), so he'd let by gones be by gones.
"Do you know anything about the Huntsman?" he figured start small, plus ever since he watched the King carry her away she'd been heavy on his mind. He sounded like a concerned Father as much as he tried not to.

Hadrian found himself vaguely impressed by the man’s comportment and calm demeanor. Yes, he still bore some of the rough edges of a Coheedsman, but the center had been smoothed with convincing Nevermerean polish. Maybe Lassiter wasn’t as incompetent as he’d started to believe. In this particular arena, anyway.
His face softened a little at Othello’s question. Hadrian could understand his concern. More cynically, he wondered just how deep that concern ran (the two had shared quarters after all, and it was known to Hadrian that Regan generally had a hard time keeping her hands to herself). But that was none of his concern.
“She’s well on her way to a full recovery. No doubt you’ll be able to see her soon.” Hadrian had received word that she’d stepped foot back in Nevermere but wasn’t entirely clear on whether Cassian wanted that to be made known. He hadn’t seen her himself, so had no knowledge that her recovery, while complete, wasn’t entirely full.

"Hmm," he responded in relaxing thought, she was alive still that was comfort enough, "Good, that's good to hear and I would like that, she's a good kid and has done a lot for me," Othello added, "I'm not sure what to do Commander...with myself... I'm becoming bored if that sounds right, I don't like sitting or shuffling, we were supposed to look at places but that can wait....do you know anything about my boat? It could prove valuable in the future, it's enchantments."
Othello was formulating things in his head, "I'd like to show you, personally if the ships ready that is, and I'd like to fill it with a crew. You said you'd be, how do you say 'chopping the fat' of soldiers who can't hack it...," he waved his hands, "I'm getting a head of myself...let's start with the progress of the ship."

His boat.
Hadrian almost corrected him. That no, it was no longer his boat, but the property of Nevermere’s military. Even if Othello were to be stationed on it, still it would not be his. But, Hadrian determined there was no point in making such a distinction. Not when he was only gaining his footing with the Lorendaler/Coheedsman/Nevermerean—whatever he was.

“The ship’s repairs are almost finished,” Hadrian replied with calm efficiency, “As for its use, no doubt it will be valuable in what lies ahead. I’d be happy for you to visit it and be given a…tour, let’s say.” Hadrian was happy to concede that much, so long as it made the Coheedsman happy. Hadrian turned to the next part of Othello’s request.
“Your boredom, Private Allemeade, is understandable for one used to sailing the seas. Trust me, I understand it personally. But I assure you there remains much to be done. Though your time with the huntsman was well spent, you’ll be integrating more wholly within our military. Perhaps down the line, a crew will be afforded you. But for now,” Hadrian said, “Focus on your training. Take orders as they’re given. It’s not terribly exciting, but I’m afraid that’s just what it is.”

Othello smiled, "You look like a sea dog Commander, way your hair is swept kind of permanently and that skin kissed by the sun behind the clouds," and then he giggled a little, "you'll love it. You see this ship doesn't just sail on those waters I love, it dives under them too," he mimicked a ship with his one arm and the waters top with the other, the one arm going under the other, "also above them," the arm that was a ship then went above his head, the smile on his face was full of amazement and his eyes as blue as the sea had glossed over almost animalistic in nature, "See no secrets here," now his tone held something else, it wasn't challenging in nature but Othello just wanted to let the Commander know he wasn't stupid or incompetent, "Last night at the ball, secrets almost led me to kill that....boy....Octavius. Because that is what I am, a killer and when I'm in those situations sir I kill. People whispering about my actions as if I was supposed to know the difference between a summoned creature and whatever that curse was the wolf curse...if I'm going to be a weapon and simulate here a little regard to what I'm not privy to is all I ask."

It was true: Hadrian hadn’t yet discovered all the ship's secrets. To hear them now made him realize a tour from Othello might be time well spent. He nodded, unable to help the touch of a smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth. The man was ridiculous, no doubt about that, but that absurdity certainly had charisma buried in it somewhere.
But once Othello moved on to the next matter, Hadrian’s smile fell away. His face grew stern as he slowly crossed his arms. He paused for a moment, considering the gifted before finally answering.
“You were never supposed to witness what you did; there aren’t even many soldiers in Nevermere that have. I didn’t believe an explanation would be necessary. But…as it is…” Hadrian’s brow furrowed, “Men in Nevermere carry a werewolf curse that can be activated by a witch that knows how to cast it. These witches few in number; it is a closely guarded secret. In fact…all of it is.” Hadrian frowned a little.
“Keeping the rest of Terra Nova in the dark gives Nevermere an advantage—one that we will need in conflicts to come. I hope I can count on your discretion.”

"Yes sir, that seems fair," Othello agreed, he sounded fairly better even (just a little), "so now we got that settled I'm good, great even," he looked around them at all the eyes that passed over him as Othello scratched his remaining beard, "I will also go about my business as you said, but I'll be honest," he waved a hand at those passing soldiers, "what the hell am I supposed to do? Go to training, got it. Follow orders. Also got that, who do I report to? Whose going to give me those orders? How do I go about getting a home?"
Othello sounded super genuine: he really didnt know what to do without Regan directing his every day to day activities. That was all he had done was be reprogrammed, service, be a weapon and now...well he didn't know the rest of the process. Of course someone the Commander's age would know where to start.

Hadrian’s brow furrowed. The Allemeade had a mission upcoming, and he found himself a little surprised he hadn’t been notified of it yet. Hadrian almost did it himself, but he decided this wasn’t the time or place—and neither was he the person to do it. So, he opted for something vague but true.
“I believe you have an upcoming mission of some interest,” Hadrian responded, “I’d speak with Miss Lassiter for further details. That is—” He added quickly, “When she returns, of course. Otherwise…” Hadrian sighed, “Captain Woodwick and Lieutenant Abbot will be your superior officers. I can make arrangements for someone to assist you in finding a place for you and your son.” He smiled.
“You’ve been a man without an anchor for some time, Mister Allemeade. Though there is stability with life on shore, the certainty does not provide one with a life as exciting as that on the high seas. I imagine it will take some getting used to.”
Hadrian’s advice was both literal and metaphorical.

A mission? Othello was very surprised as this was the first time he had heard anything about it but the Commander didn't seem to elaborate further giving the advise instead to speak with Regan upon her return. The Commander continued to spit facts about how free Othello had always been and it was very true every bit of this was new, at times it nice and others it strangled him like the collar strangled his Gift. Still the life Othello had lived in his short lifetime was more cultured and diverse than anyone else's rap sheet could ever be, he was very sure of that.
Nothing would ever compare to his time on the seas.
Not meaning to linger any longer Othello shook his head, "No need for the arrangements Commander, though it is appreciated, Benji and I will find us a home. I'll report to Captain Woodwick in the meantime for duty, thank you Commander I have nothing further, unless you do?" he would wait to be dismissed.

Hadrian once again found himself impressed by Othello’s comportment. Yes, the gifted still had some rough edges that had not been buffed smooth, but he conducted himself much like soldiers who had come up through the ranks of mandatory training.
“Nothing further, soldier. I can’t imagine this transition has been an easy one, and I acknowledge that your situation is somewhat…complicated,” Hadrian smiled, face softening some, “But your service is valued. Make no mistake.”
Perhaps there was a certain amount of ego-stroking going on by Hadrian, but there was a genuine sentiment in there somewhere.

Othello was beaming, praise was good and he had gotten a fair share of it so far from everyone but to hear it given personally from the Commander was different. With a simple smirk and shrug Othello said, "It isn't easy being Champion sir, but someone's got to do it, I was built for it," and with that a simple salute of respect, "Good day Commander, I look forward to giving you that personal tour of the Drowned Canary, good day sir."
