The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!
Ben had just finished up a training session. As a royal guard he trained on a different schedule than the rest of the soldiers did. It had been years since he'd trained with most of the people he did mandatory training with. Stepping out of the training arena, his brow beaded with sweat as he wiped a rag across it, he happened to spot a familiar face. He saw her fairly often, in spite of their lack of combat together these days, but it had been a few weeks since they'd last talked.
He jogged over to her with a cheeky grin. "Evanthe! Hope you haven't been letting all those boys kick your ass these days," he joked with her.

Evanthe had been going back and forth between sparring and whacking the life out of a dummy. She’d just started a much needed break when one of her favorite living dummies called her name.
“Well if it isn’t Speedy,” she flashed him her Cheshire grin, “Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes? How’s guarding all those royals?” It’d been a while since she’d spoken Ben, and she looked forward to their usual banter. It was always fun with Ben around.
“Have to boost their ego somehow, eh?” She swiped her wrist over her forehead, “Not that it takes much.”

Speedy. He laughed at the nickname she'd used so often, a reference back to their training days. He leaned his back up against the nearby fence as she wiped her brow and laughed again. "Ain't that the truth," he joked back. "Going as well as always, of course. Though there are so much more of them these days," he added jovially. Since he'd first become a royal guard Cassian had got married and had a couple of kids, so when they were in town there were naturally more of them on duty to accommodate the increased numbers.
"What about you? What have you been up these days? Are you part of the crews heading to Coheed and Cambria?" he asked.

“Mm,” she gave a mock shake of her head, “Talk about job security. They just got to keep having babies, huh?”
“I’ve not been up to the usual,” she put one arm straight out across her body and locked her other one over it in a stretch, “When I’m not on duty, I’m out for a good time. Looking for a new pair though.”
She’d heard about the marching orders. The thought of all those people getting to see the sun again made her green with envy. Coming back to cloudy Nevermere after sunny Coheed had surprised her for its drabness. Home had never looked so colorless before, “Nope, I’m not going this time. So unless you’re off somewhere, you’ll be stuck with me in town.”

He grinned when she stated that she was out for a good time when not on duty. "See, I knew I liked you. How is it that we have not hit the town in so long?" he asked. He remembered how much fun they'd had when they were still in mandatory training but life had made them busy enough afterwards that it had been a while since they'd gone out together.
She mentioned that she was searching for a new pair and he realized that even without one now, she technically still knew how to do the magic that unleashed a werewolf. He remembered the ball in which Bex had turned Octavius and wreaked havoc. It had been a horrible situation. Though he knew that he had the curse on himself, he had never been turned. He had no idea what his wolf form even looked like and it was a thrilling, and scary, thought to know that Evanthe could choose to turn him at any time if she wanted to. He had always wondered what it would be like to be in the paired program and would have considered it for himself had his path not led to becoming a royal guard. His brother Keir had just left his position as a guard to move back into being a standard solider and he wondered if his own path would eventually lead him there.
His shook off his wandering thoughts and turned his full focus back onto his friend. "I'm here for the foreseeable future," he said with a grin. "What are you doing tonight? What do you say we go out to the tavern for a few drinks?" he suggested with a sparkle in his eye. Ben loved to go out and have a good time.

How long had it been since she and Ben had gone out and painted the town red? Too long, that’s how long. Life had kept the both of them busy, what with her being off with her paired partner and him with his royal guard duties. Had it really been almost a decade since they’d been in mediatory training? Almost seemed like they’d gotten out just two or three years ago. Time flies faster and faster the older one got, and she wasn’t sure how much she liked how fast it was flowing now, “The job’s kept us shamefully busy,” she gave a mock shake of her head, “Being adults can be a real drag, huh?”
But it looked like the two of them would be in the same place for a few weeks at least. Perfect! She returned his grin, “Well I’ll be out drinking with you tonight, that’s what I got going on later,” she laughed, “When are you off? I am game for anything.”

A real drag indeed. He supposed adulthood came with its own perks but he had yet to decide if they were worth the downsides or not. When she agreed to a drink he beamed with delight. "Right now, actually," he said with a little shrug and a smile. "Talk about timing, am I right?" he said with a little chuckle. "What about you? Need to still finish off your shift?" he asked.
He could already feel the adrenaline starting to pump at the idea of what the night could turn out to be when the two of them got together. They made a pretty formidable team, he had to admit.

“That’s great timing, actually,” she chirped, “I’m off right now, too.” It was like the higher ups knew that it’d been a while since she’d been able to spend any time with Ben, even though it was just a happy accident.
Training had left her tired, but the prospect of a night on the town with Ben was making her feel energized all over again. It was going to be so much fun! If she were still a teenager, she might have danced for joy…and she just might do that after a couple of drinks, so she’d save her energy for later.
“So where to first, Speedy?” She said with a grin, “Sour Sailboat Tavern? Got anything in mind, or do ya wanna wing it?”
Post by Benedict Delaney on Jun 27, 2023 10:28:40 GMT -5
Ben beamed at her when she confirmed that she too had finished up her shift. "Sour Sailboat sounds perfect!" he said enthusiastically. "But I need to change out of this uniform and probably wash up a bit if you don't want me stinking up the whole evening," he joked with a little laugh. "How about we meet up there in...half an hour? Or do you need more time than that, princess?" he playfully teased.
He was feeling excited. Very excited even. Hitting the town with a friend sounded like the perfect way to blow off some steam.

Evanthe leaned in and made a show of sniffing Ben before waving her hand in front of her face, “Whew!” She grinned, “Might make that forty-five minutes!” in truth, she’d probably need that much time to clean herself up. She’d worked up quite a sweat earlier, and her hair alone could be such a trial. She often thought that her hair was like a summoned creature that refused to go do her bidding. Too bad she couldn’t just banish it back to its hellish domain.
“I’m going to get cleaned up, too,” smell aside, going to a tavern covered in sweat was just uncomfortable in too many ways, “I’ll see you in forty-five minutes,”
What a perfect way to end a full day of work! A little booze and great companionship was just what the healer ordered. Ben knew how to have a good time, and Evanthe was looking forward to that evening.

Ben laughed as Evanthe made a show of smelling him. Truth be told, while he was sure he didn't reek as much as much as she feigned he was, he probably wasn't overly nice smelling at the moment either. With an agreement of forty-five minutes, Ben headed home to get cleaned up and ready to go. As it turned out, Ellison had also found some entertainment for the evening and by the time he got him the kids caretaker was already there and getting them all ready for bed. He kissed each of them goodnight before making his way back out to meet up with Evanthe.
He had certainly been slower than anticipated, especially when Otto had tried to slow him down by clinging to his leg and refusing to believe it was bedtime already, so it wasn't until fifteen minutes past their forty-five minute agreement that Ben finally arrived. When he didn't immediately see Evanthe outside, he decided to step into the tavern to see if she had gone in already instead.

Evanthe laughed as she turned to go home. It would feel good to be clean again.
Despite her parents now being noble, and she was noble by extension, she kept her own home, paid for with the money she earned. There would be no one there, and she would not take the time to draw a bath and instead took a cloth and scrubbed at her sweaty skin until she was sure that she wouldn’t smell like she’d been running under the sun in Coheed. Her hair had always been an issue to tame, and she took the time to run some sort of an oil mixture she’d come up with to control any strands that would escape the leather band she used to tie it back up.
Despite taking the time to wrestle with her hair, she was pleased when she managed to get to their meeting spot only a couple minutes after the agreed time. She waited a few minutes to see if he’d arrive soon after her, but decided to go on in and find a spot for them to sit if he wasn’t already in there. Entering the crowded tavern, she’d search the crowd first for Ben, but after she determined that he wasn’t there, would search for an empty table. She spotted one, and quickly went to the bar to order a pitcher of ale with two cups and then would head to the empty table while juggling all three items in her arms.

Looking around the tavern it didn't take him too long to spot Evanthe, smiling that she had already found a table and they wouldn't have to look for one in the evening that was growing busier and busier by the moment. Laughter and chatter filled the room and Ben smiled as he looked around. He loved the vibe in a tavern, it was so lively and full of fun and excitement. He liked the Midnight House too though the vibe there was a bit different. Maybe he ought to take Evanthe there one day. He smiled to himself at the thought, imagining the scandalized look on her face. Though she might just surprise him, who knew.
"Hey sorry," he said as he reached the table. "Look at you getting us drinks and everything," he winked at her as he sat down. "Hope you weren't waiting terribly long."

Evanthe had claimed the table without even needing to give anyone the stink eye. Perfect. She careful not to spill anything from the pitcher as she set it and the cups that she on the table. That task done, she’d watch the door until she saw Ben finally make his way in. She’d wave her hand to get his attention.
“You’re fine,” she said, “I just got here myself. I assumed I beat you because you were getting your hair combed just right,” she grinned as if that wasn’t exactly what she had been doing before she’d arrived. She poured them both a drink and pushed his glass at him, “Feel like we ought to do a drinking game. You up for it, or do you want to work our way there first?”

Ben chuckled at the tease but gently tugged at one of his looser strands of hair against his forehead. "I will accept nothing but perfection," he said as he brushed his hand by his neck as if tossing back an invisible curtain of hair.
With a grin he accepted the glass and was about to take a sip when Evanthe suggested a drinking game. His grin grew boarder and his eyes twinkled with mischief. "Bring it, lady! What do you have in mind?" he asked.
