The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

Change in how times flows. Was 4 IC seasons, now only 2 IC seasons per 1 OOC year.
Our dearest and lovely admin welcomed her new baby boy, Jet, on Sept 7th! We're so happy for her and her family! Congratulations Mama!! Your boys are all so lucky to have such an incredible mom to love them! God bless!
The queen had only recently made her address to the people regarding the pamphlets, and understandably there was a lot of confusion an unrest. Was she taking a stance against the injustices of the gifted, or was she forgiving and liberating them? Was she going to do anything about the nongifted violence towards gifted, or would she overlook it all? Understandably, Phaedra cared. Iliana was her niece--through marriage, but still--and she was concerned about what the people were whispering about Iliana. When days were dark, one of the best remedies was a delicious breakfast.
The staff had been working all night. This sort of political turmoil had the potential to see to wrinkles upon the beautiful skin of concerned women, and Phaedra wouldn't have that. Not under her roof. Everything one's heart could desire had been prepared and beautifully displayed on a second story terrace overlooking the estate's mature gardens. Should any men of the household begin a quest for morning nutrition they'd be disappointed to find the kitchen staff snoozing at their post.
Florina and Phaedra, however, were about to partake of a breakfast for the ages.
"Dear," Phaedra called as Florina approached, the well-aged aunt dressed in a deep red gown, her face and hair fixed to perfection, "you need color in your cheeks. Come, sit, eat some meat." Whether what she said was true or not, it was the sentiment.
Magic Detection: The ability to detect magic. The user can judge magical aptitude, pinpoint magic being used within a mile vicinity, and even detect when potent magic has formerly been used in a space. The magic may originate from a living thing or from an object, it does not matter. There is no restriction to the kind of magic that the user can detect. The weakness is the spatial awareness limitation, and while the user can detect the presence of magic, they cannot detect the specific kind of magic being used.

Times had certainly become quite frightening. The queen had made an address regarding the pamphlets, then she was turned into a sheep, then her gift was outed, and she ended up outing her childhood friend when said childhood friend tried to do...something. She couldn't figure out who exactly Ori had been trying to harm--for what else had she been doing with that magic? It felt the same way it had when Ori had broken her own toe in Florina's presence. She'd reunited with a friend, just to lose her again, and this time it was definitely her fault. She should feel more guilty than she was, but she was too concerned with the terror of being in the room when that magical fire erupted.
It was a time when she was very happy to be surrounded by family.
Her dear aunt had invited Florina to eat breakfast with her that morning, and Florina had looked forward to the breakfast all morning. She’d not slept well that night--too haunted with memories of fire and betrayal--and had tried to pinch some color in her cheeks—she didn’t to want to aunt to worry...the still-healing burns on her skin would make her worry enough. She let her hair hang loose, the only thing keeping the dark locks away from her face was a simple jeweled hair pin that was fastened at the crown of her head. She'd nearly worn it up to hide the singed ends, but her very new and very clever maid had strategically trimmed some of her hair to hide that it had ever been burned. Her hair was still quite long, but there were layers in it, and her hair looked fuller than it had before. She quite liked it. For her clothes, she wore a simple, light pink dress. Comfortable for the morning--and against the burns on her skin--but elegant in its simplicity.
Florina smiled when she arrived at the terrace, and approached the table when her aunt indicated she should, “Good morning, Aunt Phaedra,” she sat and dutifully placed some of the meat dishes on her plate. Her aunt’s fussing over her only made her feel cared for, something she really needed to feel with all the unrest in Loren of late, “A beautiful spread to match the view,” she loved how well she could see the well-developed gardens from the terrace, “It’s truly picturesque.”

Phaedra was trying to pretend like everything was the same, but nothing was the same anymore. Everything had changed for them, hadn’t it? Whatever feelings Phaedra had towards gifteds was irrelevant in the presence of her beloved niece.
The duchess popped a bite of food in her mouth and chewed, her large smiling fading as her beautiful gaze filled with tears.
“Oh Flor…” her voice wavered as she said it and she set her fork on her plate loudly. A server moved forward to assist her, but she raised her hand to stop his approach. Her other hand covered her lips as she recovered. “I am so sorry you were hurt.” Her gaze flickered over the burns and the singed hair. Florina had tried her best to clean up, but she was an unhappy mess.

The emotion her aunt displayed warmed Florina’s heart, “Aunt Phaedra,” her voice had taken on a warble as hot tears burned the backs of her eyes, “You’re not angry with me? For keeping it from you?” The tears that rolled down her cheeks were as much from relief as they were an emotional release from the stress of what happened.
To the question of how she felt, well…that was complicated, “I feel…” She stared into her hands, spotting a blister on the side of her pinky that she’d not noticed until then, “I hurt, I’m scared, and I’m not sure what I should do.”

At that innocent question Phaedra abandoned her chair and rushed towards her niece, seeking to collapse on the ground beside Florina and grasp her knees. The servants took their cue to leave the room.
“No, dear girl. I weep,” and she did, “thinking of this burdensome secret you have had to carry alone. It isn’t your fault.” To be born gifted was a condition. Florina surely knew of Phaedra’s eldest son’s state. He would collapse into seizures at least once a week, salivating and urinating, utterly lacking control of himself. It wasn’t something he could help, and they did their best to keep it a secret…but it wasn’t one he carried alone. Phaedra was beside him, helping him every step of the way.
“Nothing bad will come of it, I swear it in my life.” She stared up at Florina, passion in her watery gaze, a promise she would see through.

The tears flowed freely down Florina’s cheeks as she saw her aunt drop to her knees in front of her. She’d been so afraid…so horrifyingly afraid that her aunt would be angry with her! The show of compassion and care only served to make her heart squeeze followed with a teary-eyed release of emotion.
Emotion squeezed her throat, not allowing her to speak. Wordlessly, she would try to slide out of the chair, letting her knees thud on the ground as she faced her aunt. If her Aunt allowed it, she would throw her arms around her in a much needed hug and would sob into Phaedra’s shoulder.

Phaedra held Florina tightly and they cried together. She realized that she wasn’t only crying for her niece. The circumstance had opened the floodgates, but the tears shed also became for the state of the kingdom and for Phaedra personally. There was much suffering in this world, and she wept for that. Only once their sobbing ebbed would Phaedra sit back onto her heels, dashing the tears from her cheeks with dainty swipes.
“Let us recover.” She suggested, smiling with embarrassment. “I believe you will be gaining great status in our kingdom in the coming weeks. You must accept the role with all strength and humility.” She seemed proud saying it, but also wary. She knew that Augustus intended to set her as the head of the gifteds, a role that could possibly make her a target.

When her aunt pulled away, Florina would wipe at her own tears with her fingers before remembering a handkerchief that she kept in her sleeve. She pulled it out and dabbed at her face. Later, she thought she would be mortified for surely the servants saw their large display of emotion, but she was still in too much pain, and felt too much fear and dismay to to feel more than slightly bashful. All would be well, she told herself, for her aunt had said so. Florina knew that she could do much with her aunt’s support.
The knowledge that she would be gaining a position did not surprise her. From the king and queen’s reaction, she would have been shocked if they didn’t want to make use of her gift somehow, “I expected as much,” she sniffled, having not quite recovered from her weeping. She took a steadying breath, “Do you know what they will expect of me?”

Phaedra would take Florina’s hands, if she allowed, and together they would rise to their feet once more. Should Flor be agreeable to it, they would reclaim their seats, ignoring the servants as they quietly reentered the room.
“I suspect something along the lines of assuring the accuracy of the census.” The gifted census, that is. Phaedra raised her eyebrows and shook her head. “Whatever it is, listen well, niece: take every advantage of your position. Speak sweet words to the king and queen when you have the opportunity. That same with my own husband. Be a friend to all,” her eyes gained a sharpness as she angled her head slightly, “but an ally to none. If you set your anchor with any one of them then you may find yourself sinking. There may be a time when you must choose a team, but for now you would do well to remain aloof of the political squabbles and simply do your job well.” She had t started eating yet, intent on relaying the information as she was.

Florina did not stop her aunt from taking her hands and rose with her aunt. She was happy to take a seat again, willfully ignoring the servant who would surely speak of how the two nobles had broken down and crumbled to the ground. It had been uncouth, but Florina did not care. She had shared an emotional moment with Phaedra, a moment that had been needed, and she would not be ashamed of it.
She listened to her aunt, taking her cup of tea to sip at even though it had grown lukewarm, “That is sound advice, Aunt,” it was simple enough. Had she not been taught since the cradle to be sweet and courteous? She would have to rely on her training and upbringing, “I will do my best. Only…” she folded her hands in her lap, hesitating before she confided, “…only, I am worried that if someone—a man—grows cross with me…well, I do not handle that as well as I used to.”

Phaedra, over-chewing a grape, listened to what her niece had to say and nodded, taking it in. Men. They could be pigs, couldn't they? When her mouth was clear she took a sip of the milk from her cup and said in a slightly hushed tone,
"I'll have a dagger made for you. One that can be hidden in your clothing. Additionally, how about we use your uncle's reputation to find you a private guard? A woman." One of her brows rose and she smiled, loving the idea herself.

“A dagger,” she said softly, her heart squeezing with some kind of emotion. A weapon. She was not against them, not in the slightest, but she had been encouraged to use her fingers for music, not violence. All the same, the thought of a blade that she kept on her person was a comforting thought.
“I would like that,” she said both in reference to the dagger and to the guard, “I confess that I feel more secure already.” A weak smile followed. Florina knew that she would have to work to build up her courage in the coming days. She’d hidden away too long, hiding from her demons instead of facing them. It was time to stop hiding.

”Good.” Phaedra said, and she meant it with her whole heart. In their world, men were supposed to be the protectors of women, but more often than not they were the ones hurting them. It was only right that the women should make provisions for their defense. They could attain beauty, grace, and deadliness all at once.
Phaedra would pass the remainder of their breakfast pleasantly, and then get to work on securing these things she had promised her beloved niece.
