The atmosphere was one of jubilation.
Even the bitter chill of winter couldn’t dampen the spirits of the assembled soldiers. Soldiers of all ages and stripes murmured with anticipation, all hungry for the chance to prove themselves in the eyes of Nevermere and their king. There would be three prizes awarded that day. Third and second place would receive items crafted by the Arynnites, ones that would serve them in the war to come. This alone would have been enough to make one giddy, but it was the first prize that had the soldiers buzzing with excitement.
A request of the king. Anything.
A light rain started to fall. The ground was getting muddy, but at least the soldiers would be sheltered by the high walls of the maze. They were thirty feet high and thick enough for the witches to walk them easily. They patrolled atop them, looking down to rescue any soldier that got in over their heads. The mouth of the maze was dark, both inviting and foreboding at the same time.
The soldiers would be sent into the maze in groups that had been randomly generated by the commander. Though the ones in the front would have a head start over their counterparts, they would also be the first to encounter the obstacles that waited within.
And you could hear them. Faint groaning, urgent rustling. Life within the darkened walls. One of the supervising witches atop the walls would shoot a burst of flames into the air. A great cheer would come up from over the crowd as the first group was allowed to enter…At the mouth of the maze, the soldiers would see a high wall before them. To their left was a long straightaway that seemed to continue endlessly into darkness. To the right was a sharp turn, twisting like a snake, making it impossible to see what was beyond...unless it was their chosen path.

GUIDELINES
- MOVEMENT: Your characters will be making their way through a real maze in my possession. I will track your character's progress through the maze, giving your character the opportunity the encounter pre-set obstacles and bump into other players as they make their way through its twists and turns. In my admin post, I will narrate what your character would see and provide you with a choice as to your next move (for example: Robert arrives at a fork in the maze. To his left, he can see a distant light. To his right, darkness.) You will then make a choice - in this case, to go right, left, or turn around - based on what is narrated. In your post, be sure to narrate two things: what direction you are moving/turning and whether you are running, walking, or sneaking. Moving fast will help you cover more distance and get ahead of your competitors, but you will also be less likely to notice hidden obstacles.
- OSBTACLES: Throughout this thread, you will encounter obstacles with both definitive and uncertain outcomes. A definitive outcome is one that your character cannot avoid. For example, you may fall into a trap that there is no way for your character to escape, at which point I will narrate your character's removal from the tournament. Other obstacles can be overcome or lessened through your character's wits and abilities. Your character's combat score will be taken into consideration for some kinds of encounters, but for the most part, characters will have to rely on their cleverness (and players, OOC strategy) to navigate the maze. If you encounter an obstacle of any kind, please be sure to narrate your action in terms of attempts. Do not say "Robert crawled out of the pit trap and continued on his merry way," say instead, "Robert attempted to grab the ledge and pull himself up and out of the trap."
- POST ORDER: Each character may post a single reply in between each admin post. Rigby will dictate the posting order in groups. Once everyone in a particular group as gone, characters in the next group can post in any order. The narrator will account for the actions of other players in your area and adjacent obstacles.
- POST TIMING: I will try to post a reply every 48 hours. That means your character replies need to be timely - within 24 hours of my CN post (unless you contact me and we can working something out, but no guarantees). If you are unable to regularly meet this requirement, please consider withdrawing your character from the tournament. If something comes up and you're unable to post during a particular round, please reach out to me (Rigby). I will narrate your character. If this were a board game, you will essentially just "lose a turn" for that round.
- POST WORD COUNT LIMIT: For the sake of keeping the action the focus and the exchanges concise, please limit replies to no more than 400 words. Ideally, replies will only be about 200 or less. This will allow for quick replies and more admin replies which will let more things happen. This means now is NOT the time to delve into the psyche of your characters. This is the time to prioritize ACTION. Please do not underline your action, as underlining tempts the reader to disregard the rest of the post, when every part of what you post should count.
- MAGIC AND ITEMS: Any items you are bringing into the maze with you must be documented in your first post. Each player can have one potion (only common and uncommon please, no rare or legendary potions). All magic is allowed, with only one rule: no contestant is allowed to "cheat" by going up or over the maze walls, even if their magic might technically allow them to do so. If they try, they will be disqualified.
