The peace that formerly reigned in Terra Nova has eroded, now little more than a memory. War ravages the continent. Disputes divide kingdoms; ideals divide families. The quest for power consumes absolutely and indiscriminately. None are immune to its allure.
Who will rise and who will fall? Only time—and ambition—will tell.

5 whole years of Heir Apparent goodness! When I started the site, I knew I was hunkering down for the long haul, but I never could have predicted the numerous twists and turns this roleplay site has seen. Hundreds of plots, characters, and members have come and gone, all leaving marks on the site. I am so very thankful for those who have invested. Because you keep coming back, keep getting on, and keep writing, Heir Apparent has the legacy it does today. Three cheers to us!

Elena acted as though all of this was very boring indeed, she didn’t even watch who was speaking. She brushed sand off of her shoulder absently and then went about lazily chewing on her fingernails.

Scout just stood and listened to the Gifted speak. She was very surprised to hear Florina Bellerose wasn't on the registry, and made a mental note of talking to her about it later, if the queen and king didn't punish her for it first. But her gift sounded useful, and the lack of soldiers storming forward to put her in the dungeons made her believe the royal couple thought the same thing.
For now, Scout wouldn't move and continued to stand in the range between Augustus Rainecourt and @iliana. She couldn't sense magic, and had no idea that something was happening.

Regan’s eyes—the eyes of a seasoned soldier—fell on the women in the order of Cassian’s reference to them. First, Florina Bellerose : gift, magic detection. Regan cataloged the information, eyes running over her before following Cassian’s reference to the next woman, @oriana : gift—bone healing. Innocuous enough. Any pause in Oriana’s exit with the others, particularly if Remiel sought to take her with him by the hand to exit, would draw Regan’s interest.
If Oriana’s gaze fell upon her, Regan’s gaze would meet it with the constant crackling amber veined in their depths. Regan did not have the same advantage as Florina Bellerose. She could not detect magic, and the hair-trigger witch could only judge the gifted by what she could see, smell, and hear.
But, at the slightest bit of pain or shifting in her bones the hellhound spirit that had protected her once would once again spring to her defense. Regan would explode into pure hellfire - no bones, no blood, just fire.

Iliana looked to Cassian Rainecourt with confidence when he mentioned her. She may have been the ruler who was seen most in Lorendale, who spoke the most in the years late… but Cassian was still their King. He had every right to lead such things, and remind the others of his position. Especially when Iliana hadn’t been a part of what had lead them to standing in the room.
She wouldn’t leave yet, expecting that she’d stand with Cassian to show that unified front as she stepped a little forward, shoulder to shoulder with him now. Her head giving a small nodding bow, accepting the leave of those who were allowed to go ( Remiel Allemeade, Florina Bellerose, @oriana, + the NPC’s ). Unaware of anything out of the ordinary that might be happening magic wise around her until it happened.
Magic Detection: The ability to detect magic. The user can judge magical aptitude, pinpoint magic being used within a mile vicinity, and even detect when potent magic has formerly been used in a space. The magic may originate from a living thing or from an object, it does not matter. There is no restriction to the kind of magic that the user can detect. The weakness is the spatial awareness limitation, and while the user can detect the presence of magic, they cannot detect the specific kind of magic being used.

Florina was just as relieved as she was amazed. She wasn't in trouble! She knew very well that it was rather taboo to be gifted and not registered...she'd half expected to be imprisoned for her secrecy. So when all Cassian Rainecourt wanted was for her to come in a couple of days to speak to him and @iliana, she nodded her head with enthusiasm, "Yes, Your Majesty. At your earliest convenience!"
When it seemed that she was free to leave, she would make for the exit, eager to be home after all that had happened that day. She didn't make it far before she felt a sharp, familiar twinge of magic...coming from @oriana. She knew very well what her childhood friend was capable of. She'd demonstrated that clearly enough the day they'd reunited. Everything happened so quickly, she wasn't sure where Ori was aiming her magic, Florina only felt herself freeze mid-step, and she would reach her arm out and cry out without even realizing she was doing so, "No!"
Arynnite armor: The armor have two states: active and inactive. When inactive, they look like little more than ornate metal bracers, easily ignored. When triggered, the armor covers Tybalt and serves as an exoskeleton. It will protect its wearer from physical damage and is practically indestructible.
The armor has a certain "preprogrammed" purpose which is to protect its host. To do so, it reacts to heightened emotional states such as fear and anger, at which point the armor will trigger regardless of whether or not Tybalt wants it to or even if he's immediately aware of the threat. It has some degree of awareness and sentience although very basic and one which struggles to differentiate between enemies and friends. Whilst not actually in possession of a will, the armor can guide or direct its host in a specific action, much like a reflex.
The armor needs to be "fed" as Tybalt has discovered meaning that he must hold and absorb through touch certain metals such as steel, copper, iron and tin, a process which takes a few minutes. Without which, the armor will begin to weaken and become less effective until no longer able to manifest.
Perhaps its greatest weakness is that if being consistently bashed or beaten, it would begin to repair itself by using parts of the armor from elsewhere. For instance, if the wearer is being consistently hit in the chest, the armor will begin to pool away from other parts of their body such as the feet and hands, leaving them vulnerable.

Tybalt kept his guard up, silently relieved when the other gifted were instructed to leave. It was that much less for him to worry about. A couple of members of the Royal Legion would be waiting to accompany the women, just to ensure that they didn't get "lost". The man doubted that they would, as far as he could tell, they seemed to be genuine victims of circumstance as opposed to actual villains...
A villain was what they had in their midst, although the fact that they had somehow managed to escape an Eldouir attack without any fatalities continued to baffle the commander. He was too concerned to be relieved. It felt as if at any moment, the rest of her family could be about to join them. Hence why he was quite keen to get things going where the rogue gifted was concerned.

Cassian waited as the people exited, hoping the room would clear and leave just Elena to be dealt with. He was oblivious to the intent to use magic, but when the magic detecting gifted reached out her arm and screamed, he immediately reacted. His hands, already so close together, met, the ring turned, and his will at once suppressed all magic in the room. It would extend to everyone and everything that could produce magic—except the ring itself, of course. Without the unseen element, everyone would be dependent upon physical ability. He trusted the reflexes of Regan and Tybalt to be exactly what might be needed in whatever situation was to arise.
It was the king of Nevermere’s intention that the twelve gifted who had been sheep would take their leave, escorted by the Royal Legion to ensure their safe exodus from the castle. In fact, almost all the gifted did exit before the peacefulness turned…less peaceful.
@oriana turned her palm towards the king, poised to catch the vertebrae she summoned to herself. With her magic exerted, Florina Bellerose’s detection and reaction alerted everyone to something wrong. Her arm stretched out towards her childhood friend, unintentionally incriminating the gifted. It only took moments, but the moments were just enough. Oriana turned her magic attack onto Regan, and at the start of the vertebrae’s movement, the witch beside the king erupted into a scorching fire whose heat was so severe that not a single person in the room would be spared—with the exception of Cassian due to his magic warding necklace, and Tybalt due to his armor. They would suffer minor first degree burns, and singed clothes and hair [exception to this: if Iliana’s barriers make a sudden appearance]. As quickly as Regan burst, she was snuffed out by Cassian’s ring, and all magic, including anything caught on fire, disappeared from the room. It would be as if every individual was collared and every magic item at once made normal.
Regan would immediately slump to the ground, unconscious but alive.
GUIDELINES: - post made in collaboration with Lyla who will take over the thread from here as she was out of town - Iliana will post first just in case, and then no post order following - next CN reply will be on Monday - edited to more accurately describe what the vertebrae are doing

Iliana had been so focused on Elena Eldouir that she missed the move for a moment. Her eyes continuing to go back to the red head… which is where her eyes were when she heard the shout. The last time she had been in a room with an Eldouir, she had been just a girl. Had just sentenced a guilty verdict on the head of the family, and the body of the witch behind her had exploded. It was that memory, when the heat suddenly flared in the room that had her jerk back.
A step backwards, big enough that she hit October Montgomery who had been at her back and even brushing past Augustus Rainecourt at her side. Her hand flew up, to protect her face, the memory of how hot the spray had been burned into her mind. It was there for a moment, an iridescent ripple between her and the others, only October within her personal bubble had been brought into it with her. The heat instantly fading before she dropped her hand as Regan Lassiter hit the floor, as all magic left the space. The smell of singed clothing and hair hit her first, though as she looked down, her clothing remained untouched, her skin warm, but not burned.
Wide eyes lifted as she looked to Cassian Rainecourt, and then, “Stop them.” Her words directed at Tybalt Zane, all while her eyes fell to her hands that were still tingling in a way she had never felt before.

The fire hit before Scout was well aware what was happening. She covered her face and grimaced when she felt the heat on her skin. The smell of burning hair was strong in the room. Her skin felt sore and her clothes were slightly on fire. She patted it down, hopefully succeeding at extinguishing the flame.
Florina Bellerose had held out her arm towards @oriana, so it wasn't difficult to figure out the culprit. Regan Lassiter's actions had been directed at the blonde seamstress. But one thing confused her: @iliana was unharmed. What had she missed? (Because she had covered her face, she hadn't noticed what Iliana had done to protect herself)
Scout didn't hesitate and while pretending to caress a burn on her hand, she turned her enchanted ring three times (combat score +10 for ten posts). She didn't know what was going to happen, but she needed to be prepared.

All seemed to be going well, surprisingly smoothly even though there was still the Eldouir woman to deal with. And then suddenly it wasn’t. A shout across the room of ‘no’ was followed by a sudden blaze of heat and flame. October instinctively moved towards Iliana as she stepped back into him and wrapped her arms around her, turning her body so that the flame was at his back and between them.
Assuming Iliana’s magic had worked quickly enough he’d notice the briefest odd glimmer before all magic was snuffed out though he wouldn’t know that’s what had happened. He quickly looked Iliana over to find her unharmed, assuming her magic had been quick enough and though his arms fell from around her quickly, he kept himself between her and what had formerly been the danger as he looked to see one of the witches on the ground.

Elena had been ignoring everyone until the sudden shout made her automatically looked towards Florina Bellerose only to suddenly be surprised by a singe of fire. She placed her hands over her face but the fire was gone as quickly as it had started. Her skin stung and various strands of her hair had clearly been singed.
She looked around and found a witch lying in the ground, dead or unconscious she had no idea. Choosing not to further try to engage she simply let out a pathetic whimper that was far from convincing. “My hair…” she mumbled vainly, her fingers thumbing through the ruined curls.

The yell of the other Gifted woman had Remiel turn around he had just looked back at Oriana when there was a blinding flash of fire, a heat wave that hit Remiel square on the left side of his body and the burning sensation on his face made him moan loudly in a wail of pain..it felt like his face had been set on fire and he grabbed at the raw side of his face as he hit the ground. Something was wrong with his left eye, something had popped from the heat wave of the flames...everything was dark..and wet...he could only see out of the right eye....
"Ori! Where are you?!" Remiel yelled in pain on the ground.

To Tybalt, the fire was a flash and nothing more. His armor encased him, shielding him from any harm. For all that, the man didn't take it lying down. He grabbed his sword, he would draw it in a single rapid flourish. Although, it would take the man a few seconds to get his bearings. An old hand at the soldier's game, he wouldn't care so much for the victims or damage done as he would for ensuring that there could be no more casualties. Florina Bellerose's actions served to clue the commander into who to hold accountable, otherwise he might well have blamed the Eldouir somehow. Still encased in his armor, the man would move to charge the distance separate him from @oriana. If nothing stopped him and he was able to reach her, he would raise the right hand still clutching his sword and bring it back down. It wasn't the blade that he would seek to use however, but rather he would aim to slam the back of his fist into the woman's temple. With luck, knocking her unconscious. He would use all of his strength. There was a chance that it might do some severe damage but he didn't particularly care about that.
If she tried to use her gift again in a way that he could identify, such as by raising her hand, then he would alter the path of his blade and aim for her neck. He would sooner have to explain a decapitated gifted than he would a dead monarch.

Everything happened too fast for the prince to be able to do anything but stand there and watch the scene unfold—though in truth, what could he have done? Augustus watched wide-eyed as @iliana stepped forward and formed a shield around her and October Montgomery. It would only be for a moment that he’d see before he’d be hit by the heat of the flames.
With his niece unharmed, Augustus Rainecourt’s priority would be Scout Kane. When Tybalt Zane raised his sword he’d step back with Scout Kane and step in front of her as if to shield her (though Scout herself was far more useful in this instance than he).
